EXCITING THREAD ALERT

Anyone recommend a place for a new SSD? 1G at least. I used crucial last time but seem to remember it taking ages to arrive.

Who knows. It's to upgrade hdd on a stupid Lenovo laptop. Hopefully one can use cloning software to swap it over. Is it as simple as that?

can be (using Norton Ghost), the one minor issue i had when cloning a drive was drive letter conflicting.

err you could do with knowing what type of ssd you have installed before replacing it but tbh if it's not reasonably new or expensive laptop, it'll probably be std 2.5" SSD and not the newer format M.2 (available in NVMe flavour). The stock and best answer is really Samsung, decent quality and a good warranty (warranty length will depend on initial price), that said I've always been happy enough recommending Kingston and Crucial, for general home use.
Why do you need a 1Tb drive, most people would struggle to fill a 512Gb at home, unless your using it to store video or photographs, instead of storing them some-where sensible 😉 or are we just generally confused (my post was, quick editing taken place)

same situation yesterday with a failing/failed SSD in a Lenovo Thinkpad.
The disk diagnostics tools on Hirens got me the details i needed, 2.5" and bought a Samsung 512Gb for about £60. Should be here Thursday

Ghost? Conflicting drive letters? Christ, when did you last clone a drive, 1998?

Samsung Evo. </thread>

Do you really need 1TB? I doubt it unless you're Doing It Wrong.

I usually use Scan, largely because they're within kicking distance of me if they balls up.

It'll likely come with cloning software. Don't clone it, rebuild it.

Whst does this mean? I’m about to replace my HDD with a SSD (also in a Lenovo) but struggling to find a 2TB for a reasonable price.

Don’t clone it, rebuild it.

What do you mean? Cloning isn't advised? I'd really not want to reinstall everything again if that's what you mean. It's a computer for editing audio and video so, yes, I do need 1TB.

Anything will be fine as long as it's a reputable brand from a reputable supplier, Western Digital, samnsung , Kingston. etc.

WD 'blue' drives seem to be the current 'drive de jour' on the forums I visit.

Just to add, cloning is fine, as long as you think all is currenty sound. If you think you may have a virus or some sort of corruption or anything, a fresh install is reccomended.

I think thats worth spending the cash on the Samsung Evo then, for the best performance & reliability.
Windows 10 is so easy to reinstall, so it’s alway worth doing a clean install to clear out any crap that accumulated, as long as you have all the media & license for the video/audio software, it’s my preferred option. That said cloning still works fine, & you can reset windows 10 later if you felt it needed it, there also an option to reset & keep your files (it will wipe your apps).

I tend to buy Crucial MX500 SSDs, we haven’t had a failure yet and they’re a little quicker than the cheaper BX500.

I’d also agree on a fresh build rather than a clone. Just back up your data to something, install a fresh OS and download as software you use (just remember a way to access any paid software you have).

Thanks chaps. It's all the VST plugins, and setting up and configuring stuff. It takes an age. There's probably an easy way to do all this that I'm simply not aware of. Taking some kind of snapshot of everything for example..?

Also, I'm still on W8.1

Slight hijack: am I likely to be able to upgrade the SSD on a posh Vaio laptop from about six years ago?

Christ, get off win 8 and onto 10, this is the perfect oportunity.

Back your files up and flatten it and start again.

As Cougar says whichever Samsung EVO you can afford. For cloning, I don't know as I don't normally 'do' PC's.

Do check that the original disc is ok before you clone any corrupted crud across. Full surface scan and directory rebuild on the original would be what I would do for a Mac.

Care to explain why? How would W10 make my life better? I've only just gotten used to W8...

Mind you, if W10 does away with this annoying sidebar thing that pops out every time I mouse over to the scroll bar that would be worth the price of admission on its own 🙂

How much is W10?

W10 should still be free to upgrade, just download the media creation tool and when installing put your W8 product key in. Windows 8.1 mainstream support ended 3 years ago and only has another 2 years before extended support ends, it's a dead OS. And yes, Metro gets slung to **** and you get your start button back.
