Looking for an SSD drive - I can get a 500Gb Crucial drive from Amazon for ~£100

Before I hit place order are there any other recommendations or other places I should check?

Cheers all.

GC.

Worth looking at mymemory.co.uk, although £100 for 500Gb is pretty decent. Also have a quick look on HotUKDeals. There's usually one or two deals pop up for SSDs each week

Samsung evo 850..... its self encrypting (hardware encryption so no performance penalty) nice safe data storage, but also means it has secure wipe facility for when you want to dispose of the pc at a later date.

There are quite a few free cloning programs out there, and your drive may even come with one.  All our laptops/pc's are now SSD - great upgrade.

Yeah, I managed to get a copy of AOMEI Backupper a few weeks ago as they were giving away the pro edition for free.

The Samsung comes with its own utility for this.

New crucial has had decent reviews.

Samsung good too.

Check Amazon warehouse for 'like new' returns.

Bought loads of stuff that hasn't really been out of the packet like this.

Found the samsung for £209

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-MZ-76E1T0B-EU-Solid-State/dp/B078WST5RK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1529065956&sr=8-3&keywords=samsung%2B860%2Bssd&th=1

Will this fit straight in a 2012 Macbook Pro or do i need an adaptor?

This place is going downhill... Not one person pointed out that SSD means Solid State Drive so the OP is asking for a Drive Drive.

Anyway, to be mildly helpful I've had a few Samsungs now and they have been faultless, Amazon have had some great deals on them recently so worth checking.

Guilty as charged!  I always read SSD as Solid State Disk for some reason in my very meek defence.

But cheers for the info all - the Samsung 860 500gb is looking tempting on Amazon for £107.

And that reminds me of the Windows 2000 splash screen - "Built on NT Technology"...

Showing my age here!

I got a corded Makita when I bought a house that needed taking back to brick and despite loads of abuse it came through fine. It's still trucking now, 10 years on and works as good as new. Great bit of kit.

I 'think' we have a mix of Sandisk, crucial and Samsung SSD's.  Absolutely no issues in 2 laptops, and 2 desktops. Managed to get a 1TB SSD for the main laptop for about £150 in a Amazon sale a couple of years ago

Is that a trick question? It’s not difficult at all, I’ve got over 200Gb of music on my Mac, then there’s the many thousands of photos I’ve taken over the years, backups, and other stuff. I’m looking at getting a 4-or-6Tb external drive, the two drives in my Mac Mini total just over a Tb and they’re full, the external I’m using as backup and storage is proving a bit flakey, so I’m thinking ahead a bit.

I wouldn't say it's a trick question, why would you put all that on an SSD and not just a regular drive? Laptops aside.

I only use mine as my C:\ drive, mostly for games.

Cheaper at ebuyer (a bit!).

Prices seem to be falling quite quickly.

Am seriously considering an SSD for my gaming PC.  I need to retire my boot drive sooner rather than later as it's pretty old and thanks to the disk sector size, I can't clone it to a newer device.

The idea of fitting a Samsung SSD with it's own cloning software will save an awful lot of hassle.

I doubt Samsung's own cloning software will be any cleverer than the vast array of third party tools our there.  Can't hurt to try, of course.

Thanks Cougar, I've tried quite a few of the well known free brands out there.

The 860 samsung is not much different in price than the 850, and make sure it is the MX500 curucial you are looking at - I'm looking at 2TB ones for a HS251+ quiet NAS.

Avoid Amazon if you can, I had an SSD die and they were right ****ers dealing with the return. Scan would be my suggestion, even if it means paying a few quid more.

OK, so I caved... Relieved by getting my PC back up and running cheaply I bought an M.2 drive for it, to replace my old SATA Crucial . I was always a skeptic but it's worked out pretty nice. Not worth getting a new board for but worth paying a little extra for.

Less wires too, I hate wires.

And don't forget to get it PAT tested. Oh the problems with the hoi polloi these days.

It's hardware encryption and transparent to the OS, you set a drive password in UEFI (assuming your system supports it, way more likely in a laptop than a desktop).  Google "OPAL encryption" for further reading.
