Our bedroom ceiling is extended into the roof so that there is only a few inches between the inner and our surfaces. Each AND EVERY morning at sun up we are woken by the scurrying of small creatures either in the void between the slates and the inner skin, or on the outside. We’ve had the bloke from the council round but he won’t lay any poison bait because if the squirrels are in the void he won’t be able to retrieve their stiff, cold, dead bodies.

What can we do to rid ourselves of these noisy little sods?

Might be mice, they make a lot more noise than you think they would for the size of them when scurrying about in the roof and voids. Little Nipper traps seem to work best, baited with choc chip biscuits or peanut butter.
If it is squirrels, get an air gun or mesh live trap baited with bird food peanuts, obviously you'll need to deal with them after...

We had electrical problems once with lights tripping, traced to a (now dead) squirrel with it's mouth clamped on some wiring in the roof, so they do get in sometimes and cause havoc apart from just the noise.

The problem is access. The house is 3 storeys high at the back and there is no internal access to the void as it is only a couple of inches thick.

We’ve had mice before and they moved around inside the wall cavities all over the house. I killed them all to death with various traps and baits after an almost cartoon like battle over several weeks. One of the little gits even appeared next to us in the living room one evening to watch TV. I trapped him in a butty box and set him free on the other side of the M62.

I’m not so sure this is mice because there is no evidence (mouse crap and the smell of mouse piss) that they are getting into the house. Also, from the frequency of the noise I think it is a bigger creature with longer / slower stride. AT 4:00am today I was convinced that it was a moose.
