Wrong guerilla!

Guerilla as in "on land that the gardeners do not have the legal rights to cultivate, such as abandoned sites, areas that are not being cared for" rather than a bunch of silver backs.
Not that anyone reads this thread......

1bag collected including bagged dog shit shoved into a school fence.

I dunno, the idea of a silverback in a pair of crocs and a floppy hat, delicately wielding a pair of secateurs made me smile.

I mean, humans do some proper weird stuff, but I will never, ever, ever, understand that tying it in a tree thing. 🤔🙄

I think some people genuinely believe that they're supposed to do that so the people who come to collect it can find it more easily. A bit like putting the bins out.

I've also heard the excuse "oh, I'll pick it up again when I'm on my way back home."

different route, 1 bag collected.

Did a bit of guerilla gardening on the way back, pulled a lot of Japanese Knotweed sprouts that is going bonkers and chucked it on the hedgehog pile.

...or it can be summed up by a ChatGPT Haiku
"Trash litters the Earth,
Hands embrace its scattered birth,
Hope blooms from the dirt."

Nice little blast up the new trails in Leamington this morning before going to work.

Such a shame and completely baffling how many riders, being given an amazing few hundred thousand pound facility for nothing, still will choose to leave their shit all over it.

Picked a bag up from the start mound of the jump area only.

Monday no Millie

Not seen Millie dog fûr awhile now - she must be really pining for Bert! We did see Angry Al though (GSD) - like pissed blokes in a Saturday night kebab shop Al had bit of a square up to Bert.
Otherwise uneventful 1 bag of litter collected.

Rubber dingy rapids

Last night's walk -found a discarded dingy and dragged the table legs out. I was going to opposite direction to the nearest bin so will retrieve another night.

Half a bag of litter collected this morning.

View of the guerilla garden from our living room. Apart from the trees this had been taken over by JK & HB. The left hand side has been repopulated by ferns and I'm guessing native plants and weeds🤷‍♂️ (I'm not a gardener by any means). The centre bit is starting to sprout with 'stuff'
Ripped a bit more JK up this morning.

Johnny Cash said, 'It's hard for thee to kick against the pricks', but here is Harold, Wombling away, always kicking.

Small fry compared to Bert, but every little helps.

Walking Wednesday

I run an after work walking group with a few colleagues from work. Did a route that enabled us to collect the table legs and discarded dingy from the post above and dragged then to the nearest bin. Informed my contact at the LBC

Celebratory bum sniff

Bumped into Millie yesterday who gave Bert a birthday bum sniff! Bert wandered off breaking Millies heart again😢

Picked up the random flytipping that someone had dumped on a wall a week ago - no doubt plenty of residents have been tutting at but doing **** all about whilst getting in their cars.

One bag of litter collected.

This morning's haul from the base of a crag prior to roping up. I'd like to think this was scrotes rather than climbers, but I'm not sure that's the case.

After a week off it's back to litter picking on this morning's doggo plop trot.

Not too bad - collected a bags worth.

Not very exciting photo but then not very exciting subject!

Had a chat with the grumpy groundsman of the Billybigballs mill/business centre - I don't litter pick their grounds as the business owner is a total ****. Its littered with dog shit🤷‍♂️

Otherwise 1 bag collected. Did some JK & HB clearing at the guerilla garden as it's really sprouting now.

How quick can you get your McDonald's

Is what this particular trail is called on Strava. I used to have its KOM. I now pick McDonald's litter off it - how times change!

Dragged the dumped BMX off it - should I fix it up and attempt to reclaim my KOM on it?

See units of measurement thread but this cup (and you'll have to take my word for it) was exactly 1McCup away from the nearest Maccys! Its such a reliable and repeatable unit!

Otherwise - 1bag collected.

A load of vape packaging picked up and binned this morning.
Seems to be a big source of litter droppage lately.

No photos as I'm in a massive mood with Harold who had a go at a GS on a lead on the way to work.
Not sure why but he really has a thing against that breed.

Seems like anything is a target for joyriding these days.

I knew it would end up going in the river. Surprised it wasn't already, so had to push it up a steep hill to the car park where hopefully the council will take it.
There's quite a lot of resistance from the motor so hard work to push.

Commute to work this morning there's an abandoned cheapo inflatable canoe with added beer cans on the park under a big tree(about 400yrds from the river) so me and Harold, mainly me if I'm honest, drag it across the park and leave it by a bin to be chucked into a massive hole in the ground.

Short walk Tuesday.

Bert goes canicross running today with Lucy so doesn't need a massive morning walk. Collected half a bag of litter and did some Japanese Knotweed-ing in the guerilla garden.

Kebabs anyone?

The biggest hurdle to Rawtenstall winning Britain in Bloom isn't scroaty ****s and littering but escaping sheep from a local scroaty couldn't give a **** farmer.

They are a daily menace and come into town to eat the newly planted......plants.

Bert practiced his bear work on them this morning and they ran off somewhere.

@Welshfarmer - do you want some sheep?

Trash Free Trails have just released a new video about what they got up to on Yr Wyddfa this Spring. Gives a good insight into a trail clean event and what they are about.

@alishand

Trash free trails are good because they record what each piece of litter is (as well as doing awesome litter picks!)
Hopefully at some point the companies that products and packaging ultimately end up as litter can be brought to task.

I don't record my pickings but it is consistently the same companies. Some of which have a local premises - I never usually see KFC litter because there isn't one locally for example.

But for me locally it is
Monster
Redbull
McDonald's
Costa
Lucazade
Domino's

I know it's their customers who are ultimately responsible for dropping the 'branded' litter but I do think the companies themselves are partly culpable.

All these companies are making massive profits.
If Redbull put the same energy and money into an anti litter campaign as they did making a single use carbon bowl to dangle under a hot air balloon whilst a helicopter flew round it then I'm sure they could educate and eradicate their litter from the litter stream.

I do feel a bit bad about not separating my litter bags as I do pick up a lot of recyclable litter but I just don't have the capacity for that.

Messy mountain bikers and Lumens from landfill

Sorry to say but half a bag collected from the parking area of Horncliffe Woods bike trails.

Rawtenstall's 1MW power station that hardly anyone knows about. Has been generating power for way above its design life (15years) powered by the methane from what was originally Horncliffe quarry and then landfill site before being capped.

Escaping sheep on their way to cause carnage in town on the many CivicPride planting projects.

Pulled some JK - the guerilla garden is cleared of big stuff but there is loads of it on the surrounding Riverside.

Pivot Cycles is no more!

I always thought it was cool that I lived somewhere that somebody (it wasn't me) had stuck a Pivot Cycles sticker on a wooden gate on a popular mountain bike route. It links Rawtenstall to Ramsbottom offroad.
That gate (and it's sticker) has rotted and fallen over - at least Pivot sticker side upwards!

Billy Big Balls (mill/business suite owner) groundsman had a moan at me last time this happened

Meat head groundsman.

"Okay - 'that lot' (CivicPride) don't tidy private buildings/grounds - that's your responsibility. And besides if you put the litter bin back that was there for years where you now put that sign it wouldn't be as bad"

I don't want to tell him it's the local drug addict. He's a super talented guy (I've heard him playing a piano) and does proper hardcore Wombleing including cleaning the river but is deep in the ravages of addiction. No doubt Meat head groundsman will moan again next time I see him.

🤷‍♂️

Brushed Bert!

Its the wrong jacket Grommit

Set off in my Montane 'wind jammer' only for it to start hammering down - got soaked.

LBC has strimmed Cow Lane as it was getting impassable👍

Finished off yesterday's bag.

Anyone been inspired to litter pick over the weekend?

Back on it this morning.
Tried to untangle the small watering can tied to a tree in the park but it's just a bit too high to fully untangle. A project for another day.

1 litter bag collected.

The judges are due this Saturday for the first Britain in Bloom walkabout so lots of CivicPride / Rawtenstall residents are busy making the place look amazing.

Firework **** wits

Firework and lemonade party. I think in urban dictionary terms fireworks (think Mega bang multi shot repeaters rather than a box of Standard fizzlers) = new shipment of drugs have arrived or some something🤷‍♂️

Anyway....tidied up. Did some planting in the guerilla garden of two schrubs.

Great thread, well done.  I tend to pick litter once every fortnight as honestly that's about how often I go for a walk.  We don't have much and I suspect the rich types around here think i'm on community service but on the basis I don't care what they think I will continue!

Very inspirational, I'll pop out for an hour tonight in your honour!

@villageidiotdan

Great thread, well done. I tend to pick litter once every fortnight as honestly that’s about how often I go for a walk. We don’t have much and I suspect the rich types around here think i’m on community service but on the basis I don’t care what they think I will continue!

I started litter picking 5year ago when we became guardians for our dog, the slower pace of walking Vs cycling made me realise how much litter is about.
I generally go a different route every day which is why I manage to get full bags of litter, my home town is fairly large and has a McDonalds and a few takeaways hence always litter to pick up.
Grabbing at litter kinda also gives me something to do whilst having a 'follow the dog walk'. Evening walks are for adventures!

Very inspirational, I’ll pop out for an hour tonight in your honour!

I was inspired by Civicpride in Rawtenstall, so I'm happy this thread has inspired others. Thank you.

pumped out track

.... thankfully we are getting a new one!

A good example of the international standard unit of measurement - a McCup. This one when calibrated was found to be exactly 1 McCup away from the restaurant.

1 bag collected.

Britain in Bloom judging day tomorrow.

The whole town is awash with colour from hanging baskets to window displays, yarn bombing everywhere, sunflowers galore, the place looks amazing.

re-varnished benches, retirement home display (Holme Manor), more yarn bombing, closed shop front getting in on the action, town square.

Amazing what volunteers can do.

The idea is that it's sustainable going forward - it's not just for Britain in Bloom judging.

Quick hour before work (annual maintenance/engineering shutdown).

Mainly micro litter picking (cig butts).
Lots of CivicPride hi-viz's out and about doing last minute tidying. Judging starts @9:30!

RE: Dog poop, I use a large chalk bag with the liner cut out to drop in left behind dog-egg bags when I'm walking Her Royal Highness.

Keeps hands free, easy to carry a few more withou. Just an FYI, thought it might be helpful.

Cool story time...my favourite pre Bert dog was Derek (Dirk) our friends German Shepherd. I loved that dog...until I took it for a walk when it clearly had what I now know to be a dodgy doggy stomach. Its back end was like a farmer's muck spreading tanker when it covered an entire embankment with Tyrolean shit render. It put me off getting our own dog. Fast forward a few years after Dirk goes to the eternal tummy tickle in the sky and we now have Bert. .

Nowadays it's my dogs shit, picked up bagged and in my pocket with the thought process of 'thats what temperature my dog is internally'.
Its amazing how you go from 🤮 to 🤷‍♂️ with poo.

Anyway...back to litter

That was the most surprising that thing about parenthood too!!

Am I being naive, what's with your yoofs and disgarding baking equipment?! For a long time I thought we had a cyclist/puncture problem round here with all the co2 canisters disgarded, is this the same sort of thing?

They're Nitrous Oxide not CO2; laughing gas. Used to get high as well as whip cream.

Ooooh, I'll take the whipped cream every time!

In other news, Rawtenstall has inspired me to spend an hour picking up a small bag of rubbish, that's all I could find but still very satisfying.  Hope the judging went well.

Hope the judging went well.

I wasn't there - it's my busiest time of the year at work so I did my allocated litter route first thing then left everybody else to it.
This was the regional judging - the national is on August 3rd but the whole town looked even more amazing than usual and was really well received by the judges!

grass seed and glass bottles

Turns out the cute deer that we saw running over the road towards my guerilla garden the other day then went on to eat the newly planted shrub! No sign of the schrub this morning, the surrounding vegetation was flattened and my four legged deer detector was going crackers! I hope the schrub was tasty!

Otherwise - quite a few glass bottles that weigh my litter bag down and loads of grass seeds stuck to Bert. I think he does it deliberately so he gets a morning brush.

Remote seeding

Bert thinks a deer went this way!

Apple's beginning to fall in the local park. Brought a pocketfull home to catapult over the river from our wall to the guerilla garden opposite. They might germinate (?) or at least provide a tasty treat to something.

Double bagger!

Ending the week with a double bag flourish!
My unscientific data is that motorists are the scruffiest ****s group. This route alongside the A56 is a disgrace resulting in a full bag.

Happy weekend litter picking for anyone else helping their environment

No, but spent last week marvelling at the lack of litter on Orkney and picking up the few wee things we did find.

No, but I did do my share of fly tipping reporting. Not the smartest move to leave actual restaurant menus with your name and address in with your crap.

I'm going to become rich and famous just as soon as I invent some sort of land mine system that's only triggered by fly tipping.

We're increasingly getting fly tipping around here too. I in part blame the council as they've said only people paying council tax in our area can use the facility where. My view is the more convenient you make it, the less fly tipping.

Did quite a bit of litter picking last week, bit middle class of me but I've taken to picking up little as I play golf. Lol
