I compartmentalise it to stop it turning into a full time job. Generally don't do it systematically on bike rides, saving it for walks instead - either specifically going out with a bag and grabber or building it into the point of the trip, e.g a local woodland bivi two weeks ago when I walked out from the door in the evening, then retraced my steps in the morning, cleaning out all the crap along the way.
I have to say, though, that the litter situation where I am now (South Wales) is so apocalyptic that it's contributed to me deciding '**** this' and I will shortly be relocating to Calderdale...
Too big for my 70l rucsac, so I tied it under the straps for the walk home.

Of course its anecdotal, but red Bull cans are by far the most prolific litter I see from local trails to motorways to Highland road sides.
I nearly wrote pretty much the same thing a couple of weeks back.
I’m not sure if it’s just the colour scheme catching my eye or a bit of bias but I was sure there were more Red Bull cans than anything else making up the litter around me.
I went out with my other half last week on the bikes and on a local road climb I counted 29 Red Bull cans in the verge. I’d go back and pick them up but it a 50mph road where the locals like to tear up the hill at silly speeds so I’ll be giving it a miss.
Red Bull, Monster, McD's, Costa are my usuals in no particular order - it's never Fortnum & Masons or Waitrose own brand......
Last week the missus and I were walking along the TPT near Barnsley when we spotted a teenage lad emerging from some trees. My first thoughts were not positive but he was actually collecting litter on his walk. Top lad. We plan to do the same over the next few weeks.

Trash Free Trails is collecting data on what is found and where, and then using it to challenge the companies responsible to help address the problem. One way of tracking what's found is to use komoot - you track your walk, then geotag photos of the litter as you find it along the way. Another ****ing litter rant.
Just taken Bert the doggo to a swimming spot that involves walking through a park - not the same one that my usual litter picking posts are about. He's on lead out in front and he's walked through broken glass and cut his pad - limping and bleeding. This is on a path that goes round the outer perimeter of the children's soft play area and leads down to a river and the countryside beyond.
I must sound like the DailyMail but I am ****ing sick of the littering scum and self entitled ****s that shit up this country especially when it's injuring my dog.

It is everywhere and seemingly endless. The fly tipping is one thing but the small impact/high volume stuff is probably more annoying as there's no reason for it. You brought it with you, take it home or put it in a bin.

Rawtenstall has been entered in Britain In Bloom this year. Civicpride have been doing an amazing job with the planters and generally making the town a nicer place to live so the least I can do is collect litter.

1 bag of litter collected and 20minutes of balsam bashing. I've adopted a bit of land opposite our house next to the river. Over the last year I've stripped it of HB and planted 100's of tree/bush seeds and berries, conkers etc that I pick up on my dog walks.
A lot of them are starting to grow now so just needs the occasional bit of maintenance when passing with Bert.

Hey RNP, thank you for starting this thread, its inspirational. My first litter pick tonight:
Majority of this was within about 100 yards of where I live. I had to stash it and return later with a bag.
I realise that I haven't even made a dent into the local litter problem but it has made me feel better doing something positive rather than just getting angry about it. Hopefully it will become a regular habit. Will look into equipping myself with a picker and hoop thingy.

With litter I think you can get either angry about it which achieves nothing or do something which then hopefully inspires other people to do the same.
It might be worth seeing if there is a local litter picking group or a contact at the council so you can leave 'offical' bags at the council bins for collection.

Was discussing the subject of separating recyclables this morning with Civicpride - the problem with my litter picking is that potential recyclables end up in landfill as I don't have the capacity to bring the rubbish home and sort it. Having a willful energetic dog in hand means I don't have any spare hands for a separate bag. It might be I do alternate days - litter / recycling🤷♂️

Followed your lead today and went out to have a clear-up in the village this morning.
The local council have the main road through the village closed as they're installing traffic calming. The lack of traffic meant it was safe to go and clear the verges along the road in to the village. It annoys me every time I cycle home and have to pass the dumped litter.
Next stop is the other road in to the village. The council won't let a community litter pick go along there as it's a 50mph road so hopefully it'll be ok with the current lack of traffic.

Thanks - I've been litter picking for ~4years but decided to do a STW thread this litter picking season. Since we became Berts guardian I noticed how much litter there is in the local environment - especially so when you have a dog and are out and about numerous times per day.
In my home town of Rawtenstall there is a brilliant community group called Civicpride that do flower planters/hanging baskets/ flower beds / litter picking/river clean ups/balsam bashing etc and have transformed the town and made it a much nicer place to live. Me and Bert are a small part of that community team.
Tell you what Rusty, re: photos from a couple of weeks back, I wouldn't be picking up that shit with my bare hands. Christ knows where it's been.
