You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
so last Monday I missed a step and sprained my ankle, ankles swelled up like a balloon, so went to local miu, the guy said if it’s no better in a few days get an X-ray. It’s no better, so have arranged for an X-ray tomorrow, but wife says it’s probably too swollen to put a cast on at the moment, but worst of all am away in 3 weeks to Portugal, so f they put a cast on that puts swimming out of the equation (let alone cycling) or are they likely to use one of those plastic boot things held on with Velcro? Any thoughts?
If they cast it and then:
1. You’ll need a letter from hospital confirming fitness to fly. Without this you may find the airline won’t let you on (even with a letter we had an argument with the Check-in staff at Birmingham). Usually they require that the cast has been on several days to do this as initial swelling will have subsided and risk of limb swelling at altitude to the point where it’s pushing painfully on the cast is reduced. Possibly enquire about a “split cast”, although we managed with a regular cast.
2. You can still swim with lower leg or forearm in cast with a waterproof cover. Our holiday was saved from disaster with one of these when my lad broke his ankle 6 days before. You need a dry pro cover which seals tight (you pump the air out). Works well to keep sand out too. https://castcovers.co.uk
but wife says it’s probably too swollen to put a cast on at the moment,
LOL they slapped one on my very swollen wrist without thinking twice, it was rattling in a week.
The split cast was the only thing that got me through the one time the new person on check in asked about it.
If they put a cast on it I'd probably be more worried about having a broken ankle than swimming or riding a bike 😉
edit...
Just in case this handy phrase may help
Oi meu elenco é uma bagunça suada desintegrando você pode me fazer um novo?
Do they put casts on sprains? When I did it, sure the process was RICE and MTFU.
Unlikely to put a cast on a sprain I would have thought
I badly sprained my ankle which turned into a 2 inch separation, 2 operations and 9 weeks nonload bearing in cast! Be very careful
I went over on my ankle quite badly on New Years Eve. heard a loud crack and ended up with a my ankle very swollen and I couldn't put any weight on it all. Bruising turned the bottom of my foot and toes black. I strappped it up following the instructions in my Wilderness First Aid book with zinc oxide tape and kept it elevated for 48 hours then booked in with my Sports Physio.
Turned out I'd badly damged my Anterior talofibular ligament and a few others. Had intensive physio for the next 3 weeks before I went snowboarding to Canada. Once I'd got my snowboard boot on I was ok. Just had to go east on drops and landings for the first few weeks.
Go see a good sports physio ...
