I'm not defending all forms of cycling as a sport, it's a form of transport first and foremost.

Lots of sports are derived from everyday practical activities.

If you compete it's a sport.

Disagree. Rock climbing is definitely a sport, but is overwhelmingly non-competitive. Although competitions do exist of course.

"Practical daily activities" ? What, like hammer throw?

rock climb·ing
Noun
The sport or pastime of climbing rock faces.

Based on the definition, not just a sport then , like cycling.

Now, I'm not a massive fan of Wiggins's "it isn't about me (well it is really)" schtick, but I was amused when a colleague asked my why he was "all of a sudden trying to look like Liam Gallagher".

She's a bit of a cultural div, so I CBA to explain about Modernism. For a minute Wiggo's ego seemed preferable....

Well it's not false modesty. It's like awarding the FA cup to Mario Balotelli isn't it?

I said most. Javelin, for instance is one such activity if you are a solider or a primitive hunter. Along with archery, shooting, running (ok so maybe if you are very primitive) and badminton.

No, it's a real world skill. It derives from the very practical activity of keeping wasps away from your picnic table.
