But still not coaching them 🙄
Not a popular winner in the broadsheets

What was that about a dog? Didn't watch it myself.
And "Pedant of the Year" goes to......... 😉
those newspaper articles remind me why I don't read the papers anymore - what bitter spiteful guff.
Unlucky Rory, but golf sold it's soul and public vote to sky. At least some F1 was available for all!!!

Whilst I would agree to a certain extent that it is bitter, they do have a point regarding the issue that effectively Hamilton was really only racing one other person with the same equipment, whilst McIlroy was against a much wider potential field.

Hamiltons equipment was only better because of the incredible team behind him. The same could be said of Wiggins, Hoy etc

That is such a simplistic view: The fact is that there are so many things that can go wrong over the course of a season, including driver error, that just saying all he has to do is race one other person is daft.
I can't believe this has caused such controversy: Are people genuinely saying that a Formula 1 World Champion (for the second time) is not a worthy winner of a sporting accolode? Do these people realise what skill, fitness, determination and sheer talent it takes to do that?
I agree that McIlroy would also have been a good winner, as would Pavey, but it's not the end of the World. Let's just congratulate Hamilton and the others on their amazing seasons and move on.

True in terms of the team behind them, but I would disagree that you could put any of the best riders on the same equipment and guarantee that they would beat their opposition, whereas you could probably have put Hamilton in the Ferrari all season and see Bottas in a Mercedes disappearing into the distance
Edit:I'll be upfront about it, I am not a fan of Hamilton nor F1 as it is presently set up, so this may cloud my perspective. On the other hand it is my opinion and I'll stick with it

Whiny articles by the golf correspondents, meh.
To be fair to the Telegraph they also had an article on why it was right that Lewis Hamilton won. They use for and against quite frequently.
Why did Hamilton win? It is recent, it has more BBC coverage, McIlroy will play for Ireland in the Olympics (a joke golf is included), we are a nation of dog lovers - take your pick of one or a combination.

Very true,
Glad it is not just me! Hamilton should not have won and this season I have been disgusted with his attitude on the podium, when things have not gone his way. Sulking like a teenager and not answering questions, when asked by the media. It is one thing being passionate about what you do, however he is also supposed to be a professional sportsman.
The biggest bug bear for me is that the BBC in general only covers, what I class as it's celebrity sports, Football, Cricket, Tennis & Golf. With the occasional mention of a sports celebrity such as Farah, Wiggins, Froome etc.
Given that the BBC is funded by all of us, it should be far more reaching, back to the good old days of World of Sport with coverage of a wide range of sports. With the advances in technology, that should be a lot easier these days.
I did notice that they only released the shortlist of 10 the day after Hamilton won the Championship.
It is ludicrous that Manon Carpenter wasn't in the shortlist for her achievements this year.
Marti: please ddemonstrate exactly how much golf and cricket the BBC covers. I'm guessing they show more cycling, gymnastics, athletics; with golf being limited to one or two major tournaments per year.
mikey74 Just watch BBC Breakfast or listen to BBC radio, that is pretty much all they mention.

Bitter maybe, guff definitely not. Rory's achievements this year far exceed any other Brit sportsperson for more years than I can recall!
I can't believe this has caused such controversy: Are people genuinely saying that a Formula 1 World Champion (for the second time) is not a worthy winner of a sporting accolode?
No, they are saying Rory was more deserving this year.

Who??

lol 🙂

Because these are the sports that return the biggest viewer ratings/£.
The BBC now has a limited budget and is up against much bigger spenders when it comes to sports so it has to spend its money wisely.
Rory's achievements this year far exceed any other Brit sportsperson for more years than I can recall!
So what? It's called Sports Personality not Sports Achiever (and there may well be bigger achievers, it's just that you haven't heard of them)

Rowing, sailing, (track) cycling.
So sport we've done well at too that I don't think you'd consider celebrity ones...

What? Are you serious? what its called and what it means have been a subject of debate for years. I don't see any of the other nine nominees being reknowned for their personalities, over their sporting achievements in 2014.
As for not having heard of other BIGGER achievers....name one and I'll tell you!

Oh FFS can we not do this again check definition 3b. The BBC use personality in its correct format if not necessarily the way it is now commonly used.
There are some cocks in the media.

Manon Carpenter 😉
What I should have said was that, much like most of these other TV 'contests', it's a popularity contest.
People vote for the sport they like most, the person with the best twitter feed, the person they think has overcome the odds, etc.
Their achievement that year may is not at the top of the list - all the finalists have excelled in their sport.
Some people may lose out because the demographic of their followers indicates that they are not big users of social media - a big twitter campaign has a big effect all these events.
What I should have said was that, much like most of these other TV 'contests', it's a popularity contest.
Think you hit the nail on the head, from what i heard on the Radio the other day the voting lines were only open for 30 minutes, which seems a bit poor.
At least Rory won BBC NI SPOTY and Geraint Thomas won BBC Wales SPOTY & Manon Carpenter did get nominated for that. Not sure who the winners of the Scottish or English SPOTY were 😉
