Just bought myself an Amazon Echo and debating between Spotify and Amazon Music Unlimited. Both are usually £9.99 per month but currently available for 99p for the first 3 months.

So, which one should I go for?

Having tried both, the automatic playlists on Spotify seem way better, especially the auto-generated ones. Amazon MU was also missing some bands which were on Spotify (Although that probably works both ways).

Try both see which you prefer, I've tried Amazon/Deezer/Spotify personally I preferred Spotify.

If you have no problem with Apple a years subscription is £99.

dont know if its still the same but spotify used to do my eyes in, it was either grren or white type on black background.  after id looked at it for a few mins id get ghosting on my eyes so i could still see the print when i looked away.  deezer was far better for my eyes in that respect (normal black type on white) and the same service and price really.

ive never heard of anyone else having the same issue tho, must be my crap eyes 🙂

Just try a few, Deezer,  Apple, Spotify, Qobuz and Tidal if you fancy hi res, all free for a while, just run them side by side and see which you prefer.

I went for Apple as I've got an airport express running into my amp and it just works better via iphone and pc. I also trialed Tidal and Qobuz, Tidal dropped out, paused constantly and was generally a bit meh, Qobuz sounds very nice but a little awkward to find specific stuff at times.

Having spent the last year on Amazon family subscription, I've cancelled my renewal and am going to spotify family subscription. Spotify app is loads better to use, Streaming seems more reliable, cast from app to tv (don't think you can do this on Amazon?), playlists seem far more comprehensive, the suggested music is far better. Basically everything is better on spotify.

I originally got Amazon music for use with echo and car. I wanted family so I could separate my tastes (car) to that of echo (kitchen, wife's acc).

You can use either Superflii BUT Amazon music is pish poor with many newer and quite a few older bands not on there.

Also the Amazon app is terrible as stated.

If you have CarPlay then not all support Amazon.

Only bonus with Amazon is when you have multiroom you can then split what you play, set up different groups, etc.

Spotify you can play everywhere or on each one independently, etc.

What you can't do is have different groups split across the same devices without Amazon music.

amazon doesn't have Rammstein, depending on your taste this may or may not make up your mind

Thanks all. Some good advice. Looks like Spotify gets the vote but as suggested I'll probably just give both a try.

I've been a Spotify user for quite a few years (since it was pretty  new) and have always been happy with it.  I've paid for Spotify premium for most of that time and don't begrudge it at all.

I've discovered loads of new music I otherwise would never have come across just by letting Spotify run into it's auto radio mode when the album I've listened to has finished.

They seem to improve it reasonably regularly too (though some of the improvements in the past have been a bit questionable).

I suppose I'm just very used to it now, but I have no desire whatsoever to try a different service.  It does everything I want it to and more.

I use it loads.   To me it's very good value.

You might want to take a look at just little artists actually earn from streaming services before committing to it. They are ripping off artists to an extraordinary degree, one well-known artist worked out that 55 million streams of his best known song earned him less than $2000. It’s immoral and as someone who really loves music I refuse to get involved with a system that doesn’t pay anywhere close to a living wage.

Of course, if you’re fine with basically stealing artists work, knock yourself out.

I've used Spotify for the past couple of yrs and recently tried a month of Google Play Music because itseems to me like the family subscription is better on Google

But, Google just seems to be a ton of music without much in the way of generated playlists and new music suggestions. At work I quite often look for random Spotify playlists and Google doesn't seem as good for that.

Currently trying Deezer too and at the moment probably prefer that to Spotify. Got 3 months for 99p so plenty of time to compare.

Count - better to get something than nothing?  I moved to spotify from napster type stuff as it actually did pay something to the creators.  If they are that bothered why allow their stuff on it at all?

I use Amazon music as I got it cheap due to prime  (£79), its ok for what I need but I'll review at renewal date.

Im not sure how current that is but 55m stream will generate a lot more than $2000 Revenue, a crazy amount more.

There's an awful lot of variables & it was undoubtably different in previous years, but its no longer quite as bad as that suggests.

the way i see it is i wouldnt normally be buying the stuff i listen to anyway, if i didnt use deezer id just listen to 6 music.  when i do find a band that i like, (small bands such as six by seven, trail of dead, and more recently Idles) i buy their stuff to support them.  i must have everything six by seven ever recorded even tho i could hear it on deezer.  in fact i DO still listen to it on deezer rather then the cd's as i cant be bothered with cd's any more, deezer is just easier.

and playlists...... its just a way of listening to more stuff, but i still wouldnt buy the cd's if i didnt have deezer, so its not costing the band anything.

And another thing, Amazon music app hasn't got podcasts either

IIRC you can get a number of Spotify accounts (5 mibbe?) for 15 quid.

I have both, never use Amazon music.

Spotify for me, but they all have great intro offers at the moment - I'm currently on 6 months free Tidal, after 3 months on Deezer for a quid. Add in Spotify and Amazon and you could easily have over a year for a few quid...

(I did pay for Spotify for years, then decided I didn't need it, then decided that actually I did and noticed how many free or cheap trials there were).

*edit* I actually buy quite a lot of records as well, 'cos I do like to support bands - but streaming is very convenient.

OTOH, Spotify still haven’t turned a profit yet

Spotify seems to have a more comprehensive selection of music.

I've managed to find all sorts of random remixes that I've discovered on Soundcloud etc. I'll give Deezer a try next though.

I used  Apple music for 6 months because I got it free with a new phone on EE, it worked well but after the 6 months was up I moved to Deezer. I prefer the way it looks and works.

Tip for any one www.soundiiz.com is a great service for moving playlists between platforms.

Using spotify and like it but have two concerns/questions:

If spotify goes pop in the future I lose all the albums/playlists I've put together.  Is there a way to "back them up" - not the music files themselves but a standard format for track/album/artist that y7ou could then use to rebuild your collection with another provider

Do they ever run any discounted deals on family sub- have premium but eldest son uses it more and more.

Another Spotify user ..family premium .

The question Pedlad posed is a concern with regard to them going bust ...

We only use 3 of our family slots ..due to other family members not living at this address..don't want to get banned !

As my son's musical taste differs vastly from my own ..it's £15.00 well spent + I can also play it through my TV package ..

The missus has about 3 albums on her account 😁

I've been using Google Play for the last few years as it used to play nicer with my home streaming players, it works well but for discovering new recommended music etc I think Spotify is much better, I keep meaning to try it again.

@sadexpunk I love a bit of Six By Seven 🙂

I've heard that some people get together and buy the Spotify Family package and each have a premium account for £2.50 per month...

Spotify (& I think, Deezer) specify that you must have be living at the same address for the family sub. In your profile you all have to have the same address entered in. Obviously, you don't have to actually live together for this to work although I am not sure if it would be policed in the future. Could they check up on IP addresses or something  & work out you are not actually living together?

This is why I preferred the idea of Google Play Music, as the stipulation for family accounts is that you all have to be living in the same country. Google at some point is being switched over to YouTube Music at some point, I think although currently both are available.
