Is it me or is the queue and album management in Spotify mental?
Leaving work tonight I put an album on to listen to. Good so far, it plays the first song and then the next, and so on. But I’ll be driving for longer than 1 album so I find a second album to listen to.
Click on add to queue and instead of adding it to the end of the queue after the first album it adds the whole album to play after the current song.
Why would it do this, am I doing something wrong? Is there an add to end of queue anywhere?
And also why is the play album button a shuffle button? If I’m listening to an album I want it in order.
I’ve only recently switched back to Spotify and still getting used to it, but this seems nuts!
Free version? "Things in order" is a feature of the subscription incarnation I think.
Beyond that I've no idea, sorry.
I hardly ever use the queue function so can't really comment on it.
Are you paying for Spotify premium? If not, then I think all albums are shuffled by default (to encourage you to upgrade to premium I suppose).
If you are paying for premium, then shuffle just stays in whatever state it was in, I think.
So if you had a playlist on and hit shuffle, then put an album on it will remain in shuffle until you tell it not to (i.e turn off shuffle).
I’m on premium.
That’s fine that it keeps shuffle on, but annoying but not the end of the world. My comment on shuffling albums is why does the big green play button shuffle?
But that’s a minor niggle, the main thing is the way the queue works. I’ll have more of a play tomorrow.
Just click the first song of the album below the shuffle button and it will play in order as long as it's not previously on shuffle
Did you que your first album or just play it? If you didn’t Spotify will just think you’ve had enough of the album and move to your queued items after the next song finishes.
Just had a play with my Spotify account and it worked fine when I added the first album into my que. it appears to prioritise queued music, so will move to the song you asked it to play next (first song of the queued album)
Drives me insane as well. I think if you simply play an album by clicking on the first song (my default) then it works.
Once you begin to use the queue function, that’s when it all starts going wrong, it all gets weird and disorderly.
Atleast you spotify is working at the moment.
The app on my phone is currently being a crashy mess.
I think that I understand your problem, but the way that Spotify plays and queues music seems totally logical to me.
Assuming that you currently have no songs in your queue, if you press the first song of an album then it will play the album. If during the first song of the first album you then queue the second album then it will play that album after the end of the first song. After the second album it will return to playing the first album. How is Spotify to know that you haven't just got bored of the first album and want a change?
If however, instead of playing the first album, you queued the first album to play it. You could then queue the second at any point whilst playing the first album and it would follow on.
Basically once you decide that you want to use queue during a listening session, you should use it throughout. (you can always view the queue to check the order, add, move and remove)

How about you create a playlist before leaving work then you can keep your eyes on the road while driving and not looking for more music to play.I use it in the car sometimes but unless I'm using the mapping on the phone it's in a holder facing away from me so I can't be distracted or tempted to look for more music. I've no idea if you can use voice control but that would be another way around it
^this
Have you genuinely just admitted you are driving along searching for music?
No I haven’t, the whole point I want to queue a second album is so I don’t have to touch the phone when I’m driving. This all happened while sitting in my work car park.
My phone lives under the arm rest.
I've just gone to albums and on the album icon right click and added the album to queue then repeated with another album then another. if I look at my queue they are then there in order, all of one albums tracks followed by all the tracks of the next one. You can also right click any track in the queue to remove it if you want to. That's on the pc, I've then selected all the tracks in the queue right clicked and added them to a new playlist. A bit of a faff but that may be the only way if it doesn't work via the phone

This is the answer I think. With nothing playing, queuing 2 albums plays them both in order.
If I start the first album and then try to queue a second it adds it after the current song. It seems silly that there's no "Play Next" or "Add to End of Queue" differentiation. Like there is with Google, Apple and the way Sonos works, including with Spotify.
How about you create a playlist
A workaround, but not ideal because I'll end up with a number of playlists with just a couple of albums in. I think that queuing before starting playing is the way forward.

I'm glad it's not just me. In the whole scheme of things in life I can deal with it, but it's nuts!
Just click the first song of the album below the shuffle button and it will play in order as long as it’s not previously on shuffle
This works, assuming nothing else is playing. I've just done a test, Arcade Fire - Suburbs playing. Find another album (Frightened Rabbit - POAPA). Click the first song and it plays. When the first Frightened Rabbit song is over it plays the rest of the Arcade Fire album and THEN the second FRabbit song. That makes no sense!
Infact this is even worse, I can't actually make it replace the queue with just a new album?? I have to click add to queue, then go to the queue, scroll down it to find what I've just added and click on the first song of the album.
This is nearly enough to make me stop using it 🙁
I’ve no idea if you can use voice control but that would be another way around it
Yes voice works with varying success. "Play My Liked Songs" got me an Irish Folk Playlist the other day, which wasn't really what I was in the mood for... Playing albums or named playlists is more successful.
This is all on an iPhone btw.
A long time Spotify user here and I *think* I've worked out the (non) logic. What's most confusing is that the Spotify interface is NOT identical on mobile and desktop and the queue is pretty persistant (so can be hard to clear)
On Desktop there is a big green "Play" button when you're on the Album 'screen'. Hitting that only adds a single song to the queue, but makes the rest of the album 'up next' so that when the songs in the queue have played
On Mobile the big green play button is a 'shuffle play' (ie different to desktop)
When you hit the play button either on mobile or desktop Spotify immediately-
- plays the current track
- adds the album to 'up next'
*But* it plays the queue first, before it plays the rest of the album.
If you want to play one album and then then next you really need to 1)clear the queue 2) add the first album to the queue, 3) add the second album to the queue
If the queue is empty and you click on the first track of an album it will play the album in order (but not always - when I'm using Spotify connect via my Yamaha amp from my old iPad it often, but not always, plays one song and stops).
Stuff that is a pain/things that you can't do or that is **(* annoying
There is no clear queue button on mobile (you need to select all the tracks first) or scroll the bottom and click on the final track in the list.
You can't easily do (unlike iTunes) is add a track to "play next" while letting the current track finish.
This thread is a great support group, figured it was just me that felt the queuing system was a bit mad. Might consider another look at Apple Music...
It's not just you, exactly the same feeling from me. Drives me nuts!
Might consider another look at Apple Music…
No, too many other annoyances. Spotify search is way way better than Apple Music.
......the queue is pretty persistant (so can be hard to clear)
Amen!! It's such a pain in the arse I don't use it. Luckily, I'm rarely on a long drive but if I am then it tends to be long podcasts.

I am so pleased it’s not just me!
Re Apple Music - if you mostly want to listen to albums or your own playlists it’s much better.
The Apple search isn’t as good. Spotify is much better for discovering new stuff & their available playlists and suggestions are far better. If I use one of the Apple suggested playlists I’d find I skipped a lot of the songs, Spotify plays me a lot more interesting stuff that I actually like.
Spotify also plays nicer with Sonos which was my main reason for changing.
It is an utterly shite user interface if you want to listen to albums. Shuffle is set to on as default and you can’t add albums to the queue without creating a playlist or it just plays them randomly. I’d go back to Deezer, but I’ve got that many albums and playlists on Spotify I can’t be arsed with the rigmarole. Just need to remember to turn shuffle off before staring an album.
Shuffle is set to on as default
Only on mobile. It's not on desktop.
On mobile clicking the first song on the album - and not shuffle play - will play the album in order.
Discover weekly is my default answer! (I never listened to full albums pre-spotify tbh)
Only use the mobile or tablet version. Clicking first song doesn’t work as it’s set to shuffle. Have to remove shuffle by pressing the symbol. Probably different depending on what device your using. Either way it’s an extremely shit setup and is geared towards playing tracks not albums.
I think the crux of it is that it is mostly set up for playlists, when I first started using it (I think I switched to Google 6 years ago maybe??) you couldn't even add albums to the library. You had to make a playlist for an album and I'm still going through and deleting playlists of albums and adding them to the library. I probably should have started a new login but I'm sticking with this one now.
