My sennheiser cx300's have died so I need something to wear when running and for the odd ride.

Who has used Bluetooth earphones and are they worth bothering with over a cheaper pair of wired earphones?
Looking at previous threads it seems the standard STW answer would be plantronics but I've read a few average reviews on them and seen recommendations for monster, jaybird amongst others.

I don't really want to have to spend a fortune to get a decent set so if the likes of plantronics or others around their price point aren't up to the job, I would probably just go for another wired set (although not another pair of flimsy cx300's) although I quite fancy not having a wire.

Is Bluetooth a revelation? Or just expensive faff?

I've gpne back to wired for riding but still use bluetooth on the turbo or at the gym. Mostly so I can keep my phone away from the buckets of sweat that I produce.

I found the band from my plantronics got a bit caught in the helmet straps and if it was windy I couldn't hear any podcasts 'cause they're a very open design. They are very sweatproof though.

I definitely prefer running without wires flapping around. Sound quality is likely to be worse than a similarly priced wired set but it's not really a priority for running. I also went for unsealed ones for safety outdoors which affects the sound more than bluetooth vs wired does.

I used to get through a pair of wired headphones approximately once every 6 months. I’m still on my original Plantronics Backbeat Fit from about 3 years ago.

They are designed to let you hear some background noise, so some people don’t get on with this.

I’d recommend them - they fit really well, incredibly stable, and so much better than corded headphones

Less annoying when I'm riding down the canal and trying to get the attention of runner with headphones though. I even have a bell to stop being moaned at, but half the people I ring the bell for can't hear me because of headphones.

(and some of the rest have a sarcastic dig anyway "at least you *have* a bell". Yeah, thanks).

s Bluetooth a revelation?

I bought some, and TBH once they're set up, yeah they're a bit easier to deal with than having a wire, but...the wire's not all that much hassle, and you need to remember to re-charge yet another bit of kit. Also, (they were cheap) but on a very rainy run, they stopped working, I dried them out, but now only one ear bud works.

so, yeah, but no.

Bluetooth is a winner for me when running. As an off-road runner I was forever catching the cable on undergrowth resulting in the phones being yanked from my ears or the phone at regular intervals...

I also find the stay in my ears better - I think the cable swinging about as you run tends to work them out of your ears a bit.
