following on from the kabaddi thread.

which sports should be televised that aren't?

some of my choices to begin with.

sumo (or martial arts in general)

chess (it's a sport of the mind)

world championship stare out contests

8)

world leaders going at it in the ring (instead of starting wars) 😉

🙂

with the arrival of HD, fast small ball sports like hockey and pelota would be good to see more of.

Hillclimbing - of the motorcar/bike variety. Excellent spectator sport especially at 'club' level with everything from Mini's, 205's escort Mk 1's & 2's, caterhams, ginetta's to single seater open wheeled jedi's, pilbeams, march's etc etc.

I also think a weather channel would work well here too...

Kickstart was brilliant.

I know this can be touchy on here, but I don't think mtb makes for very good telly- even most mountain bikers don't watch the downhill when it's on so how succesful would that be as a general sport?

Downhill and 4x would be great, as would the ski and snowboard versions of 4x.

Used to love the speedway on Grandstand when I was a kid.

I'd like to see lots of different types Racing:

Banger racing
street luge
Motocross
BMX
Go-karts

I know this can be touchy on here, but I don't think mtb makes for very good telly- even most mountain bikers don't watch the downhill when it's on so how succesful would that be as a general sport?

I always make the time to watch the WC DH online

But if I was going to televise any MTB disiplines I reckon 4X and Trials would be the best contenders: you need to consider what's going engage the interest of non-MTBers and how well it's going to work on TV...

4X - Plenty of action, moto after moto, direct racing with a bit of contact on occasion, shouldn't require a massive number of cameras or a big production team to cover the whole course (where DH can be a bit more challenging).

Trials - plenty of disbelieving "how do they do that" comments from non-MTBers, relatively easy to cover.

XC - more of a doing than a watching type sport IMO doesn't make great TV...

DH - I like watching it, but I like the sport average non-MTBer might watch for a bit but ~2hrs of pajama wearing stormtroopers rattling over the same ground won't hold their interest...

Internet broadcasting for the more "Fringe" extreme sports is a pretty good way of doing it, those who are interested will find it online, those who want to watch football will pay for a SKY sports sub'...
