I know that it is the worst time of the year to make a request for sponsorship, but here goes..

Hitting 50 this year I wanted to try and challenge myself and raise money for a good cause, so I am raising money for a small diabetes research charity:

https://www.drwf.org.uk/

My 15 year old daughter is type 1 diabetic and has been since her second week of primary school at 4 years old, so it has been a lifetime of injections and finger pricks until she recently has been using a closed loop insulin pump system, although this has not been without worry with her last hospitalised last friday.

In addition to that, I am type 2 diabetic following COVID (a genetic thing in my family seemingly, with relatives usually getting it following cancer or other illness), i am lucky in that i control it without medication.

One thing i have never been is a runner, I haven't run more than a mile prior to December last year having dislocated my knee playing rugby against the navy in my 20's. As such, and because it is hard to ask friends and family to sponsor me to cycle, I am taking on the London Landmarks half marathon, the Edinburgh half and the Cardiff half marathon all this year. So far I am up to being able to run 10km for the first time this week, although its taken me a few days to recover and a lot of stretching!

Definitely not a natural runner still, feel very flat footed and most runs are measured on richter scale, not distance, but getting there...

Many thanks

Chucked a tenner in...I'd hate to think it'll be coming back to me in some way (T1 since I was 17 months old) 😉

No error just the page doesn't move over (a "javascript" message appears at the bottom of the page), I was reading the tick boxes as mututally exclusive, but you just need to tick both. DOH!

Thank you @w00dster and Paul, very much appreciated..

I found getting to 5KM the hardest, its the opposite to cycling for me, cycling long distances became more of a mental thing the longer you rode, or if you rode through the night, running weirdly it is getting through the first 1-2 miles, i hate the first mile, but once i can get breathing calmed down and get into a rhythm then i kept playing mind games and switching between km and miles, i got to 5km one day and went that 3.1 miles, let see if i can get to 5 miles, and managed it.. few weeks later when out to run 5 miles, and then had a bit left, so switched back to km and said, lets see if i can get to 10km or 6.2 miles...!

Bit of a bump...

First 7 miler today, but really struggling with constant aching in hips, like the DOMS you get when you first get back into weight training, but in both hips, seems to wear off when i run, or move, but once i've been sat a while and get back up, walking like Metal Mickey..

Thanks again to those that have sponsored me to date..

Another bump..

Thank you to those that have sponsored me, it means a lot.

One week to go now before London Landmarks half marathon.. i have managed 13 miles in training, but it took me 2 1/2 hours off road, so hoping I can improve on that on the day, aiming to try and stay with the 2 1/4 pacer and see how i get on, but definitely not a natural runner being 95kg of rugby lad, i've had every ache and pain there is to have below the waist i think.

I am taking on a year of challenges to raise money for the diabetes charity in all, i follow the half marathon with the 170km Paris Roubaix sportive the week after.

Link is here thank you...
