Mr & Mrs OTS + 1 x 14 + 1 x 11 year old.

We like a mix of beaches and stuff to visit / gawp at. Cycling for softies, snorkelling, rambling - nothing too gnar core. Also like to eat out. No fans of all inclusives.

Could Split be a goer?

Any experience / recommendations? Maybe a week in split and a week somewhere else?

Ta

There is plenty to do but the harbour at Diocletians palace is a frequent calling stop for huge cruise ships and there are intermittent floods of passengers running ashore briefly. Just a short ferry ride is the island of Brac which is lovely - hire a car and spend a week exploring its coast and interior. Not gonna blow your socks off in terms of activities, more a quiet week really. Further along from Brac is the island of Hvar which is a euro playground - lots of cash and private yachts.

Brac is the main "family" resort, it is mainly for German and Croat families; Split is more for young couples and the cruise ships. A week in Split is a long time IMO, as it is quite a small city and I'm not sure it's really set up for kids. So you could do three nights there, a few more in Brac, then some in Hvar - but that is moving around a lot especially if you have luggage. Depends on how happy your kids are with doing that.

All the beaches are pebbled, but it is very beautiful.

I love Croatia but if I had an 11 and 14 year old I would probably be looking somewhere else like Majorca (Pollensa area), or Ibiza, rent a villa, rent a car, explore the island on day trips from your base.

Snorkeling is good, we based ourselves around Tisno and the Kornati Islands mostly. Sailing opportunities too.
Think the Sea Organ is in Zadar, which is nice place, eclectic history, Roman structures next to Soviet concrete. Rather urban beach areas, but not so bad if you head out of town to where the resorts are. Spent a few days there before Plitvice lakes.

Transport was good, we got a fast train south from Zagreb and then a coach to Tisno.
English isn't commonly spoken, Austrian German or Italian get you further.

We are off to Brac Island in August. Looks amazing, and has mountain biking trails apparently.

We did a Dubrovnik to split “tour” a few years back. Stopping in Hvar for a few days (which is Great) and Split- which was very nice for a day or two but it’s a city, albeit one with a promenade, swimming area and cool old town. A week with kids just there may be too long but a few days in the islands mentioned would make a nice multi stop trip.

Brac is certainly more family friendly than split. I'e been lots of times and even got married there. Bol is becoming more "showy" than in previous years which is a crying shame. Rubbing off from hvar town I expect. If be tempted to look at sumartin or puscica as a base and then dropping into supetar and bol as you wish.

As other have said used Brac as a base.

we did two weeks in croatia flew into zagareb one night there, then flew to split spend a morning there then got a ferry to Brac.

Brac is beautiful. word of warning, beaches are stones (that i went on) and where bloody hot bare foot so might be worth getting some of those water shoes things (or crocs if they float your boat)

Brac also had a bike rental place as you where walking up to Zlanti rat had load of cube bikes but think they even did an uplift service to the top if you wanted that.

Zlanti rat also had an amazing inflatable climbing frame in the sea thing too

Quite a few people in Brac offer boat trips 'excursions' to other island we did Hvar for a day let you swim on the boat etc.

loads to do
