Put my slippers on this morning to start my working day and there was a slight tickle. Took my slipper off and out hopped a mega beastie. Being superstitious I will not kill it but escorted it to the front door. Seems more of these crawlies this year.
Ohh I hope not. I get sick of this - constantly recovering spiders from all over the house. On more than one occasion this has resulted in almost total bedroom emptying in order to find some tiny little thing in the middle of the night.
Bike tyres lying on my kitchen floor while I'm rebuilding the wheels. Moved the tyres last night as they were apparently getting in the way and Mega Spider trundled out. Proper big 'un, it looked a bit snug in a 29x2.6 DHF.
Oh, and we need @reeksy to the forum 🙂
The big spiders are hunters who feast on all the weeny mites and mini beasts that live in the carpet, sofa, curtains etc of your house. So IMO moar spiders is a good thing.
I have lots of harvestman spiders in my house and when I say lots I mean years of unrestricted breeding and no dusting. My house basically looks like it has been decorated for Halloween. The reason for living like this isn't because I love harvestman spiders but because they eat the house spiders when they start coming inside at the end of the summer. I'm terrified of them. It's my take on biological pest control. 🙂
^ Hope you don’t do AirBnB.^
Blimey! Seems there are more every year, must be billions of them now.
Free pest controllers. Great set of lads and lasses. Zebra spiders are a rare treat.
I never notice spiders in the house but this week I've been spotting them dotted around the place. I hope we're not about to be invaded.
None of them are as big as the ones in the garage. They're just unreasonably large. They look like 8 legged gerbils.
Its that time of year when my now 16 year old daughter still needs her dad to make sure there are no monsters umder the bed
From experience you will need to be available for at least another 11 years….
Daaaaad there’s a spider!! Dad—Keep an eye on it I’ll send mum😁 I’ll do daddy long legs, moths and butterflies (and bats) she is 27 ffs
Kids eh?
There is a difference of opinion in our house. I'm a big fan as they eat flies, mossies and other annoying things. Mrs OD very much less happy.
I've got a couple living behind the wing mirrors of my van.
I normally don't mind spiders but a noble false widow in my dog walking shoes earlier did give me a bit of a surprise. The zebra spiders who live in our porch on the other hand are very welcome although they must have got tired of my kids checking that they do indeed jump!

Love the spiders. We have millions of them.

The maaaasive ones (giant house spiders I think they're called) are more active in August / September as the males start wandering around the house looking for love.
Put my slippers on this morning to start my working day
Get a real job you lay about 😉
I rescued this one out of the kitchen sink earlier.
It's a great feeling when it's NSD.
Your lawn wants a trim.
In our house they are accepted*, but generally escorted to the under floor area where they can munch other beasties.
*Accepted can mean a scream at first.
**Particularly when they are heavy enough to hear thier footsteps

flip flops this morning.
Great timing. I went to grab a hat yesterday and it had been webbed to the wall behind it. Huge house spider making itself comfortable inside. I shook it out and it trundled off. They always seem to set up in stupid places in our gaff. Never going to catch anything from inside one of my hats!

Or...
Its that time of year when my now 21 year old daughter still helps her dad to make sure there are no monsters under the bed
🙂
In the past week i've found a large spider (perhaps the same one) in 2 of my most feared places: in my riding shoes, and inside my full-face helmet. The full-face dweller was a pain to get out, he ended up behind the lining so I had to fully tear it apart whilst being very brave.
I've also recently found what I think was a Cardinal spider, which is apparently one of the largest in the UK (it was ****in huge). Pics below:
Cardinal spider?

Helmet spider

I love looking at spiders, the bigger the better, fascinating things, especially the beautiful garden spiders who make the proper webs.
No way am I letting any touch my skin though, that gives me the creeps for some reason! Most bugs etc I'm fine with. The only spider exception is the zebra jumping ones, they're great.

Are you sure it's harvestmen and not cellar spiders?
Harvestman = fat round body, not actually a spider, don't make webs, AFAIK don't eat other spiders.
Cellar spider = longer thinner 2-part body, makes the creepy raggy cobwebs in corners, eats other spiders.
Both often known as daddy long-legs.
Our house is (also?) full of cellar spiders, especially the cellar (duh), horrid things.
All hail the spider bro's!
They are welcome in my house and I even have one or two van spiders I try to feed by making sure a few flies get in after riding!!
One of them doesn't seem keen on me placing flies on the web for it though. I guess it prefers the thrill of the natural hunt!
Fascinating watching it dart across the web, when a fly gets trapped, then wrap it up for later....
Never going to catch anything from inside one of my hats!
You might want to check your hair, or if you're bald, behind your ears. Obviously, thingies are living there.

What madness is this? A daddy long-legs is a completely different thing. It flies, for a start.
I’ve had several Steodota in the house, and those get trapped in a glass with a piece of card over the top and evicted, same with house spiders, although they get moved to one of the sheds so they’re under cover. What I have had in the kitchen over the last few days, and I’ve noticed them because I could feel webs on my head as I walked in, not having much hair these days, and that’s garden orb weavers! Having the kitchen window open seems to entice them in, and they’ve been setting up home there. I did evict one, because it was in an awkward spot where it might get hurt, but the other two I’m leaving, although I might move one so that it’s in the window where it can be primary fly control!
And jumping zebra spiders are just too cute for words! 😍
“this has resulted in almost total bedroom emptying in order to find some tiny little thing in the middle of the night”…
…..aggressive foreplay?
Just me and Miss sandboy at home, sudden screams upstairs. “Dad, there’s two spiders in my bedroom, can you get them.
They were very small and easily caught and deposited in the garden.
I just don’t understand the fear? Fascinating creatures.
We have a vaulted ceiling in our lounge and bedroom, about 14ft at the ridge - fortunately Mrs DB’s eyesight isn’t good enough to spot them as I haven’t got a ladder long enough to reach 🤣
