Caught by a mobile camera. Got the notice through today. The car is in the mother in laws name with me as a named driver (very very tempting!).

What am i looking at?

Points and a fine. Too fast for a speed awareness course I think.

Fine or speed awareness course, I reckon.

Take it as the penalty for your poor observation!

Doubt it mate. Unless you've got loads of previous...

You will however get a load of 'won't somebody think of the children' grief on here that'll make you wish you were banged up...

Fine and points. Probably over the limit of a speed awareness course, but I could be wrong.

That sort of speed definitely points and a fine, I can't see any force offering you a speed awareness course at that level.

I got away with a speed awareness course for 42 in 30 last new years eve but I think you might be heading to court for 46...

Well I'd be interested to know why you deemed it necessary to do that speed in a 30 zone.

🙂

Hmmm...46 > Limit +50%

You might be looking at a magistrate...does limit +50% mean anything these days or am I just imagining that?

As above,
3 points and £100. (Edit) a summons is possible actually that would be more points, possibly 4 and an income related fine plus victim surcharge.. Possibly a couple of hundred pounds all up.

To quick for a course.
I know you were joking about naming the MIL...perverting the course of justice can end badly.

Don't be tempted to do nothing either, failure to furnish is 6 points and a horrid conviction code that really will bugger up your insurance far more than a basic speed conviction... You've got 28 days!!!

I got caught 37 mph in a 30 mph zone, I think up to 42 mph you can go on a speed awareness.

Should I ask when the camera was last calibrated or take it on the chin?

5 years hard labour I reckons. Could be worse, roof over your head, three square meals a day, you get to be Big Frank's special love bitch. So all the sex he could ever want!

Silver lining and that. 😉

Hmmm...46 > Limit +50%

And your speedo will be over-reading, probably 50 at least. Fixed penalty, 3 points at least and whatever the fine is these days, £90 and up I expect.

Should I ask when the camera was last calibrated or take it on the chin?

I suggest you post on pepipoo if you're even considering going down that route.

Woody,

That calibration stuff is usually online, if you want to contest it you plead not guilty and go to court. You pay all the costs if found guilty, an expert would be called to prove the camera was fine and you get hit for over £600.
Possibly not worth it....

Even without a speedo in front of you in a 30mph zone you re going to know that you are doing well in excess at 46mph, it's not far off 50ffs!
If you can't do the time don't do the crime!

My Defence Your Honour:

I usually drive like a grandad, but look before pulling out.

The 30 zone is right at the top of a steep (10%) hill that is in a 60 limit. You need to be going well over 30 to get up the hill and not stall unless you're in 2nd gear. Typically at the top you're just clicking into 4th. So without ragging it, most drivers are doing 40+ by the time they crest the hill. As soon as you've crested you can see the roundabout ahead about 300m further down the road but the 30 zone starts about 250m before the roundabout.

It's no excuse but the 30 zone starts very quickly after cresting a v steep hill and well away from any houses.

If you get caught, then yes you could be looking at soapy time

I'm stupid enough to be doing 46 in a 30 but not stupid enough to do that. Record is clean as a whistle......until now!

Let's forget "steep" 1 in ten inclines and "ragging it" at 30. It's a 60 limit, you get 50 yards' warning to drop to a 30 and you can't do it? Either you're fibbing or deserve the points. Sorry.

There's a 60 > 30 transition on my commute with, being generous, half that distance's notice.

No point contesting it. Its only an SP30 which has no effect on insurance etc. If you contest you may well get a heftier fine plus costs. You were speeding even if the calibration was out, just man up, face unto your responsibilities and take it on the chin. If you get offered a speed awareness course then take it, I went on one recently and I actually learned a lot. Its not a case of getting lectured at by some patronising **** telling you that you are an idiot for speeding, but they actually give you an insight as to why the speed limits are what they are. Its stuff that's not in the Highway code or that you learn for your driving test, so will be news to you. Though unfortunately I don't think you'll qualify so it'll be a fixed penalty notice.

pepipoo suggests the sentencing guidelines point to about a weeks wage, 4-6 points and possible short term ban of 1 to 4 weeks.

Unless you were on a reduced speed section of motorway.

That's pretty much what I got caught doing in Manchester last Summer
3 points and £100, no option of a course, insurance unaffected (actually much lower this year)

I was too busy following another bike to notice the camera 🙂 well it was dark 😉

I call troll. No-one could be that incompetent to think that the only way to crest a (not actually that steep) hill means you can't slow down enough for the 30 limit you evidently know is at the top.

Should I ask when the camera was last calibrated or take it on the chin?

If you were doing what they say you were, the latter.

If you weren't, then mistakes with number plates are possible (a neighbour got a speeding ticket for somewhere they'd never been, queried it, and someone had misread the VRM from the photo).

But camera van operators won't cock up on a technicality like calibration, nor will traffic cops. Both calibrate their speed guns at the start and end of each shift. General purpose shift cops might, but more often than not will do it correctly.

Got caught doing 49 in a 30 in Carlisle a few months ago on a very early Monday morning, got pulled over i think they were looking for a breath test more than a ticket. Was polite to the two officers and ended up with a £100 fine and three points although i did have a clean license at the time.
Officer said it was to fast for a speed awareness course.

I drove past a camera van (hatch/cam facing me) doing 65+ on the speedo in a 40.

Never heard a whistle. That was a clammy moment though.

The ACPO guidelines are max of 42 for speed awareness course, 50 or above is a summons.

OP is this you..
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-south-west-wales-30838617

A driver who admitted speeding past the same primary school 10 times blamed the flashes of roadside cameras for being too dull to see.

Abbas Hashemi, 58, notched up 30 penalty points in under five months near Gors Community Primary School, Swansea.

The father-of-two said he was unaware until 10 tickets turned up in the post on the same day.

He was banned for 18 months at Swansea Magistrates' Court.

Hashemi, from Cockett in Swansea, who is originally from Iran, speaks no English and used an interpreter, sped past the school at up to 39mph in the 30mph zone.

Despite repeatedly triggering bright flashes as he raced past roadside cameras he claimed their light was hardly noticeable.

He was warned he could be jailed if he was caught driving while banned.

"The cameras are very old and for a very long time the way they flash is not very visible. I do not notice it very much," he said.

Hashemi was also fined £370.

If it were me, I'd take the FPN - likely to be the least painful and expensive option. Court is always a ballache. Always.
