We all like a good speeding topic don't we? There's a regular mobile speedtrap that I pass through and once again it was active today and I was under 30 no drama. The thing is the signage is well dodgy as you enter the built up zone with the left hand sign barely readable and the right hand sign missing. I've often wondered could someone use that as en excuse to dodge a ticket? There is a small 30 sign on the right a bit further along and the speed trap is at the bottom the hill just before the school.
Map is here
Does it have lampposts.
If so the abscense of signage telling otherwise defaults it to a 30 anyway.
Possibly could. Report to council as roads fault?

sounds like a good place to have it signage is a bit crap tho - suggest the council repaint it?
Where there any dropped kerbs?
About 10yrs ago a policeman told me that incorrect signage is one way to get off a speeding ticket*
*never had one before you all pile in
I'd stop & ask them to request improved signage - but then I like the idea of folk getting caught speeding and not getting off
It's the one in Preston Book that got me 😁.

Better than ours. They sit in a layby on the only sensible overtaking spot on the A7 for about ten miles while stuff is thundering through our 20 limit village at 40 a couple of miles north

That was my understanding, possibly wrong.

A family friend had the same issue in his local village so he contacted the Camera Partnership about why they did it. It boiled down to nowhere safe to park the van. A quick word with his neighbours and they all agreed to allow the van to park on one of their drives at certain times of the day and it massively curtailed speeding through the village.

At what spacing do the signs (of anything other than 30) need to be to overrule this?

To be honest the signage is very poor and if someone is not familiar to the area the could easily not realise they are in a 30, so the idea of getting caught and not getting off is really poor (surely the whole idea is doing people intentionally breaking the law not trying to catch people out because they are unaware they are in a 30)
Having followed that google maps link if anyone gets to the school where the speed trap is and does not realise they are in a 30 then they should lose their license as they are too incompetent to drive

I get what you are saying about the school but you could be hundreds of yards down that road without realising you are in a 30 (if you didn't notice the 1 poorly painted sign)
Of course you should realise. Built up area, lamp posts, repeater for the 30 mph. its obviously a 30.
There is a little 40 under the road sign that mostly obscures your vision which ahs two large and clear 50 signs on show. Yes, it is a 40 zone but...
Reported via Council website.
Same topic but different problem. In our village we have a 30mph limit and as you enter the village there is a permanent sign which shows your speed. I reckon these types of sign are dumb and just display speed but in theory it should be really easy to turn them into an iot device with a sim and small processor that can report back the readings. I've got a 1500l lpg tank in my front lawn and recently had a tiny box fitted with sim and small antenna that reports back the gas level and the lpg company come and top up when it gets to 25%. So the question is are these signs 'smart' or can they be adapted to be smart?
Yes, some are smart and record the fequency of speeding and dates and times
At least the smiley face ones do apparently
So the person rumning the speed awareness course r i did told me
The follow up is actual man in van if speeding is continuing and doesnt decrease
After gateway signs, there is no requirement for repeater signs in a 30 limit. Street lights and no signs mean 30. Distances between lamp posts doesn't matter either.
That 40/50 up there is a 40, the 50 section starts at the 50mph gateway signs...

It’s not 50 until you reach the 50 sign so you shouldn’t have a problem as you’ll be doing 40 anyway. Of course you don’t speed up to 50 before the sign, do you?

I am World Class Accident, of course I speed up. I was doing 130 when I passed the Vauxhall Insipid on the inside and 140 before the Highway Agency car*.
The 30mph if there are street lights rule is a myth and not a law. It is however good guidance. Similar to being able to see tyres and tarmac when you stop behind a vehicle. Not a law but helpful if they roll back or stall and you have to drive around them.
*possibly not totally true 🙂

40 repeater followed by what looks like a 70 limit...but that is actually for the adjacent railway line...
I assume you're trolling, but I'll bite...

Absolute crap. It's law.

Okay - it is the law but there are more exemptions than compliances so it is almost pointless as a law. Useful as good road sense though as I state.
Those last two pictures (the 40 before the 70 and the 40 before the 50) are clearly there in case tickets are challenged. I would imagine a camera van parks in that layby on the left quite frequently.
For both of those examples, one has to wonder what possible safety benefit is there in catching people speeding in those particular spots. Bottom of a hill, just before a school: have at it.
