Just wait and see. I got flashed by one a couple of years ago at around 15-20kph above the limit on an Autoroute. Never heard a thing. I'd probably have paid if they'd sent a fine.
If the French authorities have to deal with the DVLA, it is likely they will just give up.
Expect a phone by the pissed.

Have been flashed by probably over 50 speed cameras and not once heard anything.
Should be ok as long as nothing happened on the spot....

This- if its uk reg then chalk it up to experience. But if its a hire car you will be chased to the ends - and then add a hefty "admin" fee from the hire company.
Bosses mate got done, he rented 2 hire cars, the other driver (another mate) got flashed.
Fine went straight to french hire company, who duly charged it to the bookers credit card.
Bosses mate gets credit card bill several weeks later with an additional charge for the fine from the hire company 🙂
Cue a falling out within mates.
If on a rental, cancel credit card now, never hire a car again in france, maybe never go back :0

Yes, forward facing one, so it would get the driver of the car, even if it blinded you. I was fine, the wife was driving. 😀
I was also flashed by a speed camera near Chamonix last week. I was in a Swiss hire car (hired from Geneva airport), so I'm hoping it will be ok, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to be landed with a fine from the hire company. Will let you know...

Watch out for the Swiss ones. I got done on one of those which resulted in 1,200 CHR fine, conviction and immediate recovery on entry to the country until I explained I had never received the first warning which I paid in full.

The French tend to take the money when they see you or rely on the hire car company. Eurocar charged me 60 euro in France and 40 euro in Italy to share my details but neither country pursued it. i only knew about it when I got the extra credit card charges from the hire companies.
Off to France soon. Not driven there for 8 years. What are they like on speeding these days? I used to just hammer through France and never had any issues.

Not for a LONG time. They still pull people over but with wide use of speed cameras the average speed in France has dropped dramatically. The only place you get regular speeding is on the paid autoroutes these days. I've seen more customs officers stopping drivers than police around here (I've been stopped twice). The run up from Lille to Dunkirk used to be police heavy but for the last 3 years at least, they're pretty relaxed as the road has a sprinkling of speed cameras and POI speed camera alerts are illegal (but if they don't pull you, who'd know)
Is very disappointed... Speeding, the very work of the Devil and no condemnation or holier than thou comments about observation, deaths of children, world poverty etc. Tsskkkk, STW is slipping.
Wasn't there a new agreement a couple of weeks ago allowing info and fines free movement across borders.

There's no point, France is a lost cause regarding speed. Often their speed limits are a little higher than ours due to being rounded off in kph - and as we know [b][i]our[/i][/b] speed limits reflect the maximum safe speed possible.

Speaking from far too recent experience, if you are anywhere around Montpellier this summer and you see a white Megane estate parked on a long straight section of road, keep to the limit (after margin of error, calculated at 52 in a 50 limit area) 😳
It is €90 (up to 10kph over the limit) if you pay within 30 days, but not if you are driving a car with British plates.

I got a €10 speeding fine in Germany earlier this year. Thanks to the Avis and Barclays it cost me nearly €70 to sort out.

And Monaco. Mate lives there and has Monaco plates - he's been flashed many many times and the French police just ignore it there's no legal agreement between Monaco and France. He's a lucky bustard in so many ways 👿

OP very unlikely you will hear back assuming you where in your own car. If you have a rental there is a much greater chance of being fined, especially if you are over the limit by a decent amount.
I have never had a flash followed up from France in my own car (one from a rental). I have had two tickets from Switzerland, very efficient are the Swiss.

Be careful around the ferry ports, i got caught my a gendarme on a motorbike who pulled me over supposedly for being 10kph over the limit, I know for a fact that I wasn't, I was careful with my speed and had my sat-nav set up for a audible tone if i went over limit.
He issued a ticket and when my wife and i did not have enough cash with us, he escorted us to a cash point and we know for a fact probably pocketed the cash. The Spanish are as bad, got done for speeding there when i was a column of traffic of about 8 cars, the difference was the other 7 cars did not have GB stickers on back.
Tolerance is 5% up to 100kmh and 5kmh thereafter whether fixed or mobile.
Brits need only worry about mobile radars with on-the-spot fines and vehicle confiscation beyond a speed I'll let you look up if you're really that much of a road hog you think it might concern you.
Bear in mind that Brits are disproportionately represented in accident statistics here so France might be a bad place to drive faster than everyone else. You're unfamiliar with le code de la route, your reflexes all work the wrong way and habits are different. If the gendarmes are really short of cash they head out onto the autoroutes on a rainy day and cruise along at 115kmh, and fine anyone stupid or ignorant enough to overtake them.

@scud, yes that certainly sounds very dodgy. Do you have the ticket ? You can follow up with the local police area / town hall and make sure the money was deposited. It won't hurt you to write letter and directly state you are concerned that the cash fine may not have gone to the authorities.
My French gf is paranoid about speed cameras and police, I would imagine that because she knows they will try and fine you of they possibly can. They are pretty sneaky in terms of hiding with hand held cameras or down side roads on bikes and fining you in cash if they can. I've been stopped a couple of times and asked to produce the yellow jacket, registration, insurance etc. This has always been on smaller local roads never on the autoroute fyi. I've also had a white van drive "right-up-my-***" and my gf insisted I slow down and move over and sure enough there was what I assume to be an off duty guy driving perhaps hoping to make some spending money.
The drive to and from Le Mans 24hr (2012) was quite entertaining - po po with speed guns hiding in the bushes in the central reservation, lying under the crash barriers, little heads popping out from behind bridges. Even saw a camera van hiding in a bush. Never have I stuck below a speed limit so religiously. Brilliant when they pulled over a string of Ferraris (all of which were definitely above the speed limit) simply by running out into the motorway in front of them. Genuinely got the impression they were enjoying their work that weekend.
Not read the whole thread, but this is the situation:-
- If the car you are in is french registered, then the owner will get a fine etc, and if the owner happens to be a hire car company, they will pass the fine onto you. If the owner is a friend, then its up to him how he deals with it.
- If the car you are in is not french registered then you wont hear any more about it.
This is only if you get flashed by a static camera, if you actually get pulled over, then normal french rules for fine etc apply.
Speed limits change, sat navs are rarely up to date. I wouldn't contradict you if you were complaining about bent police, scud, but gendarmes are in the Judge Dredd league.

Just a point in case re @Edukator's post, my gf religiously updates her satnav and it still doesn't reflect the reduced speed limit on the Peripherique around Paris which is now 70 vs 80 and has been so for 6 months. We've also found a few places on the autoroute which are 110 not 130 as on SatNav

Not true. If the car is UK registered you won't hear any more about it. If it's other European you may well hear about it.
As for satnavs I use CamerAlert which is effectively crowd sourced but it's still frequently wrong. A nice thing with CamerAlert though is that you get credit on your subs for submitting changes; as a result mine currently expires in 2029

Its the reason I always hire a car from the swiss side of geneva airport when going skiing in france.
