The creator of The Wire, David Simon, delivered an impromptu speech about the divide between rich and poor in America at the Festival of Dangerous Ideas in Sydney, and how capitalism has lost sight of its social compact. This is an edited extract.
There's a youtube video of it here: but it's 1h 19m!
(although someone in the comments says the actual speech is only 30mins of it)
I watched a documentary the other night called "The House I Live In", which David Simon was in. It's about the impact of draconian US drug laws, really eye opening.
aye.
i read the extract in the observer.
pretty much spot on, really, i thought.
him and boris johnson should go for a coffee.
America is a country that is now utterly divided when it comes to its society, its economy, its politics. There are definitely two Americas.
T'was ever thus surely?
T'was ever thus surely?
Weirdly enough, no. This video lays it all out, and I find it mind boggling. How can this exist in a democracy? And before we get too smug, you can bet it'll be like this over here soon enough;
Its weird how socialist has become a derogatory term, especially in america, but look at the stuff the Hate Mail ran over Ed Millibands dad!
Weirdly enough, no.
But the video you posted is only about current wealth distribution and what people think it should be 😕
Have a look at American history, the origins of american music, Bluegrass and the Blues

there have always been poor people, yes, did anyone say otherwise?
But the video you posted is only about current wealth distribution and what people think it should be
Quoting from the video: 'In 1974 the top 1% owned 9% of the nation's wealth, now they own 24%, that's nearly three times as much'.

On a related note, I very much like the sound of "Festival of Dangerous Ideas". I'll have to spend a while going through the youtube channel.
