Bit perplexed at the circuitry in my flat.
I have a radial circuit protected by a 22 ma rcbo.
A previous owner has added a branch to one of the sockets (fair enough, that seems normal enough) and has also added two additional sockets to (what was ) the end of the radial, but these two are in a loop that goes back to what was the last socket. So there is a kinda mini ring circuit at the end. Why was this done then? Rather than just extend the radial? Any ideas?
Thanks.
Not a sparky but assuming the same thickness wire is used throughout I can't see there is any benefit in doing this as the max potential currents flowing would be at the start of the radial circuit not the end.
Possibly the person extending it though it was a ring or more likely was just an idiot. Plenty about, just cut through two mains wires myself as some muppet (electrician) buried them 15mm below the floor running over joists rather than through them, so in cutting the floor boards I cut through the cables. Complete PITA as this was at the edge of a room, so there's no slack in the cables to rejoint them and run the through holes in the middle of joists....
not good practice. I would break this ring to keep it conventional. Assume you mean a 20a rcbo, which would protect the cable ok so it is safe.
Rich.
