I'm after a couple of spare DSLR batteries, but with all of the scare stories of fakes catching fire etc.

Would you buy or avoid some or all of these?

Some sound far too cheap, especially when Jessops are trying to charge nearly £50

I have found some batteries to be fine, some to have shorter life than the real ones, and some that didn't fit properly. I'm not afraid of fires, but battery running out on a remote trip is not good.

I have a 600D. I thought about copies, but i wouldn't feel comftorble using them. FYI I paid £25 3years ago for the second one, these are £30 now.

Guaranteed to be fake.

It's much the same with phone batteries. I was looking for an old Nokia battery and found some sites talking about it, referring to various examples, and 9 out of 10 were all fakes. The ones that were genuine were the ones at retail price.

Not that the fakes were necessarily any more explosive than the genuine lithiums (though can you trust them to be as safe as possible?), but they are likely to be poor quality. Last for a short while and then just not holding charge properly.

Jessops are always a rip off though.

Have you looked into the Duracell LP-E8 compatible batteries? Should be available from reputable sellers in UK, if not also the high street.

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/cameras-and-camcorders/photography-accessories/batteries/duracell-dr9945-lithium-ion-rechargeable-camera-battery-21019312-pdt.html £12.89 and includes warranty.

I was going to suggest Duracell - reasonably priced but still reputable. I've got some for both my DSLR and compact and they've both been fine.

I have used loads of really cheap camera batteries and they have all been fine

Phone batteries have all slowly died. But not exploded

But make sure the camera you are buying for doesn't need a chipped battery. My D90 doesn't brother in laws D7000 does

Sorry, I meant the ebay one is likely to be fake. However looking at the comments on that Amazon one, looks like some are suspect about that too. Though seller comes up as Cannon (and is a Prime product which tend to be more trustworthy), but comments refer to a different seller. It's hard to tell where it actually comes from though with Amazon.

Basically there are a hell of a lot of fake batteries out there, and they are very convincing.

Bought non Canon batteries before from Amazon and bizarrely they've outperformed the original ones. The last one I bought was branded Maxsimafoto.

John your new DLSR is a lot more efficient with battery use compared to anything compact/mirrorless, you should be able to go 400-600+ photos depending on flash usage, why not see how you go before splashing out on a spare and instead save your beer tokens for one of the cheap and good prime lenses that will fit your camera like the 24mm, 35mm or 50mm.

I have two Canon originals and a Jessops own brand one for mine. And to be honest, I don't think the Jessops one lasts as well. I think it drains quicker.

Cheers all

Russel, been playing around with it since I got it and yes it's been dark at times so the flash has been used on and off.
The warning light came on today hence this post.
The camera came with 2 lenses so a spare battery from Duracell as mentioned above won't break the bank

I can highly recommended expro for batteries, I've had several and they've all been at least as good as the originals from new. They also sell through Amazon.
