I have bought a car with 18" wheels, unfortunately it came without a spare wheel, just a couple of foam tubes. I have searched ebay and the internet, and am confused, as some 16" wheels are advertised as fitting my model of vehicle. I can understand that a non-low profile tyre will have a larger o/d, and may work as a temporary spare, but how would I calculate what tyre I need to put on a 16" rim to work safely as a spare.

Unfortunately a genuine spare is nearly £500 🙁

any help would be appreciated.

Baz

It'll likely tell you in the handbook of your car what size wheels / tyres are suitable for use.

I'm looking for a set of 16" steel wheels to fit a set of winter tyres to replace the 18" alloys currently fitted. The cheapest replacement wheels I could find for my car were from here...

£52 each compared to £120 each from a Mitsubishi dealership.

its easy 🙂 look on the tyre label. if its written on the tyre label it is homologated for your car. if it isnt, er, it isnt.

Does it need to be a space saver or would a full size spare fit? 4x108 is a common size with other manufacturers

I'll check. My issue is that searching ebay comes up with 15" compatible wheel/tyre combinations...how can this replace a 17 or 18" wheel.

see here:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-PEUGEOT-208-2008-3008-CITROEN-DS3-C3-185-65-R15-FULL-SIZE-SPARE-WHEEL-36/332412593079?hash=item4d6555a3b7:g:QRgAAOSwE9JZ4hRN

comes up as compatible... and for 17 and 18 inch wheels. How can this be?

It will fit, its limited to 50mph and as such designed to get you home/to a garage. The smaller outer diameter will give you a speedo discrepancy but its like 3mph assuming you fitted four of the space savers.

Whilst other wheels might fit as a set, I'd stick with the same rim size and profile that are already fitted.

Edit - also do you really need a spare? Decent breakdown insurance might be as effective - or run flats?

You don’t need a space saver the same size, that’s the point. It’s just an emergency measure to get you home or to the garage (at limited pace).

Breakdown cover is a poor alternative as you can have a wheel swapped in minutes and on your way, instead of waiting who knows how long for someone to show up. Run flats ruin the ride of cars designed for them - wouldn’t put them on anything else (also should really have tyre pressure monitoring)

I'm always pointed and laughed at when this comes up, but if you are going for a spare option also spend some time thinking how to tether it in the boot properly. If you were to have a shunt, i wouldn't want a wheel bouncing round the interior as well as the crash itself.

Yes, it's unlikely but it is a relatively avoidable risk too.

My wife has a 'kit' in her car, I've got a steel 16" wheel, with higher profile tyres that are used on the lower spec models, as mine has 17" but lower profile.  See what profile the lower end models are.

Im no help here, but I would be looking for something the same overall OD, basically it sounds like you need a tyre 2 inches deeper profile.

I am not a legal or mechanical expert, and from the above posts sounds like you "could" get away with a different depth... but I wouldn't want to... who fits a set of 4 space savers!? I thought that a space saver just wasn't as wide, but would have the same size OD, but the narrower width saved space in the boot....

Anyway, I got the dealer to throw in a spare when I got my car, as don't want to risk waiting for a van for an easy change... unfortunately its a space saver as thats all that fits...

Its a stupid idea, you should get a full size tyre in all cars, why would you want anythings less! and why would you want to risk having to wait for a breakdown van...

Another point to take into account is that you almost always need a different wheel bolt for steel spare wheels if the original wheel you are swapping was an alloy wheel, originally the manufacturer normally supplies a suitable set with the tool kit.

Typically tapered foe alloy and rounded for steel   see  https://www.tyreleader.co.uk/tyres-advices/bolt-types-steel-or-alloy

They may be tricky to find for a decent price, but I would definitely recommend buying an identical alloy so you have a ready replacement for any knackered tyre.

The first time we needed a new tyre for our Sharan there was a limited choice and they were charging almost £200 each, whereas the same tyre from blackcircles/mytyres was £120 delivered & fitted.

I got an identical alloy on ebay for £95 (from a scrappy in Germany) and it has paid for itself at least twice.

One other obvious thing to point out... get a suitable jack that fits under your car and make sure you know where the jacking points are (the bottle jack from our LandCruiser didn’t fit under the Sharan... I found that out the hard way)

Check your caliper size. My Volvo has larger calipers and discs as it came with bigger wheels/posher model. Smaller wheels won't fit for winter tyres...
