Spare Bed - Mattress?

We have decided that our spare bed needs a new mattress as the current one is so soft it leaves you with back ache. We like pocket sprung, not memory foam.

Its only for occasional use so wants to be cheap ish, but not so cheap you feel every spring! We did buy a John Lewis mattress a couple of years back which was in the basics range and was about £250 but it was frankly awful.

Ikea appears to be the go to, but I am not sure if their range has recently changed.

Go along to IKEA and try a few out. We've had ours for about 8 years, best performance/price option out there.

Vesteroy is the pocket sprung IKEA. It's still a best buy on Which website.

I've got a blow up bed for visitors. Not a camp type but full on double. Cost about £300 but it's worth it.

Don't discount your local shops. During lockdown we picked up a double from my local furniture shop for £200 delivered and it's absolutely great

We have the cheapest pocket sprung one from IKEA on the kids beds and they seem great from the odd night I’ve had on them.

Have slept a few times on a mate’s spare bed which has a cheap Dunelm hybrid (spring/memory foam) mattress and that was good for me too.

If its the same size as your main bed, and you can afford it buy the mattress you'd want to sleep on. When your mattress comes to the end of its life 8-10 years swap it for the spare and repeat.

Aren't IKEA mattresses an odd size?

Doesn't look like it anymore. standard UK sizes, which means I'm stuffed when I need to replace my euro sized one

IKEA used to be Euro size but switched to UK about 8 years ago. We bought a bed double bed from them before that, then when it came time to replace the mattress the Euro size one had to be ordered in. I'd hope that they'd still offer the euro option as special order.

Just get a half-decent foam mattress. We did that for a spare double bed and it turned out to be more comfortable than the full blown Tempur in another room! You'll get better value at the bottom end of the foam mattress price range then you will for springs. Collect from Dreams and just let it expand on the bed.

Thats what we did and our old one has gone too soft. The JL mattress was for our sons bed, which we then replaced with a decent one.
