Inspired by Baby Driver i want to sample sounds from life and create music from them. i have an iMac running 10.6.8 Snow Leopard and a MacBook Pro running 10.11 El Capitan. both have iTunes on them. what's the best way for me to do that?

Thrice GarageBand.

Also install it on your iPhone and work on projects there too. (And be a little shocked at quite what can be done on a phone)

A small portable recorder like a Zoom or Edirol is useful out in the field, then yes, Garageband.
