I currently have a 6 year old Sony sound base which has served me well but it is quite basic and sound quality could be better. I've read a few reviews and comparisons and there were 3 or 4 that stood out, but they all seem to be discontinued products with no direct replacement available. Have they just gone off trend? I don't want a wall mounted soundbar (thin separating wall, horrible vibration) and don't have the space for separate speakers so a decent soundbase is my preference but I can't seem to find new ones anywhere.
Maybe look at a sound bar without sub woofer. Ours just sits in front of the tv
I have a canton dm55 serves me really well, definitely a marked improvement over sound bars I demoed at the time.
Just looked on line and it’s discontinued which doesn’t help you! And a quick google shows hardly any sound bases, no idea why that is?
I’m struggling to visualise this. If you are talking about wall mounting a bar then I presume the TV is wall mounted? So what’s the base on now?
The TV isn't wall mounted, it stands on top of a sound base. That in turn sits on a large monitor stand with Xbox and PS4 under it. If I had a breezeblock or brick wall I would consider a soundbar and wall mount it above the TV, but it would need to be one with built in woofer. But due to the type of wall a sound base is my only real option
OK. Some bars are pretty short and fat - maybe they would fit on the monitor stand?
They are out of fashion and hard to find. Sometimes they get called sound stages if you want a new search term. I don't know of any recent ones, so it is really a question of buying old stock. The Philips HTL4110B is obtainable pretty easily still.
We use one (a discontinued cheapo one), it's perfect for where we need it. I don't know how hard I'd try to avoid a soundbar if we ever need to replace it though!
I think soundbars with wireless subs have condemned soundbases to the scrapheap. You should be able to wall mount the soundbar (which only deals with higher frequencies so no significant vibrations) and put the wireless sub wherever you like in the room (ours is tucked behind the sofa)
a few still available
