I know this pops up from time to time and I’ve read the last couple of threads.
What sort of spec RAM and storage and what chip/speed is best to look for in the £280-£350 range for laptops please?
My son has been saving and has just shy of £300. We can boost that a bit though. He wants it for online games, homework online through his school account and internet browsing.
My current plan is just to look for the most discounted option in PCWorld.:.any better ideas?
Thanks
If there's a better spec'd sub £300 than this Asus Vivobook on Amazon I've not found it. I've swapped the HDD for a smaller 240Gb SSD mind, these are pretty cheap now too.
I would look for something like this.
Minimum specs:
CPU - Intel i3 minimum but am not sure about AMD equivalent
SSD - 256 minimum (extra file storage just use portable external HDD)
RAM - 8GB minimum
Interface - USB 3 minimum
Connectivity - wireless, Bluetooth, LAN etc ...
Or get this one at £399 from ebuyer.
HP 250 G7 Laptop, Intel Core i5-8265U 1.6GHz, 8GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Full HD, No-DVD, Intel HD, WIFI, Windows 10 Home
We bought my lad a Lenovo model, i3 chip & 8gb RAM. Not an SSD but he’s been happily running stuff like Minecraft. Lots of homework, & lately designing roller coasters on Plant Coaster.
I have to say, in use it’s no different to the £2k Dell Precision i7 I have for work.
If you go £350 you can get something with 8g ram and an SSD.
Excellent, thanks for the help.
The AMD R3 version for £349.99 looks good to me. 8mb ram, 256 ssd, and the AMD R3 chip has a proper graphics card built in.
Sold by Amazon means if anything goes wrong its usually no quibble.
aye, spend 350 - 400, worth the extra expense for ssd and 8 gig.
Yep that's the one.
This for even less - £240 with discount code though it has only 4gb ram and the screen bezel is thicker.
When you say "online games" what are you talking about exactly? Laptops costing £300 do not generally make good gaming rigs, what you want there is a desktop.
