Anyone know about elements for an oven? Do I need to stay with the oven manufacturer or would a local person be able to obtain one and fit?

The less said about the manufacturer the better as they caused my blood pressure to go sky high earlier. 😐

As always, thanks. 🙂

Try both the local traders and the manufacturer for a quote and go for the cheapest.

depending on the oven, it should be replaceable. Call a few local repairmen with the make and model and ask them to give you some costs.

Local appliance specialist or compotent DIY'er should be able to source and fit an element.

espares - OEM stuff for every model and easy to replace. espares website even has a video to show you how. Even I managed to replace mine and I'm useless at this stuff.

EDIT - too late

Thanks for the replies. The manufacturer are out of stock of the part, I've had a row with them this morning and this afternoon will see me phoning their head office.

Absolutely useless, Baumatic by the way. I've been without an oven for 10 days now.

Where are you? Thnking new forest or somewhere that part of the world?? Might be totally wrong...? Anyway, there's a great place in Basingstoke will almost certainly be able to get one and pretty sure they've got service engineers too (Basingstoke Service Centre). Sure there'll be similar in most large towns and def go local rather than manufacturer...

My old cooker, gave to a work colleague. Got a new element from E spares for £30 and I fitted it in 20 mins. Easy to do. If you can hold a screwdriver without stabbing yourself, you can do it.

Ours is a Baumatic. I just took out the blown element, took it into the local spares shop and they had a suitable replacement, not a branded one, but it works fine now.

re: that espares link.

I always know that which ever the cheapest part they list when you get on a page the one I need will be always be the subtly different one that costs 10 times as much.

You guys are brilliant! 😀

Checked the espares link and it's not available. Can't afford a new oven - it's a large double-width one in the middle of the kitchen.

I've had to pay £97 for a call-out and they are due tomorrow. I got a phone call yesterday asking me to pay for the element up-front (£66) even though apparently it's out of stock. So they're coming tomorrow to do what exactly?

Considering it's me who's suggested it's the element, I think they've got a bloody cheek.

They charge extra for credit card payment so have used debit card.

A mate in work had the same thing happen, looked at the tinterweb and found out how to change element, went to Swansea market to one of the electrical stores got a new one for £19 went home and fixed the problem. Worked a treat for him.

I am sure CG you have one of those shops nearby thet sell that kind of stuff.

Oh dear - thats steep but at least itll be sorted..
Usually pretty easy to fit and it doesn`t have to be a manufacturer / original part, wattage is the key, and youll find that one element will cover many ovens so they should have something thatll fit. Theyll probably turn up tomorrow, confirm its the element and charge you the call out saying theyll ring you when the (expensive!!) element arrives - ripoff but thats how it works. Couldnt sleep at night if i operated like that.
I do em for about £40 all in but i dont suppose thats any consolation, shame youre not in sw london - special rates for stw !!

I bought a new element for about £25 off Amazon and fitted it myself. About an hour all in inc all the faff of getting the oven out from the wall to access the back. 110cm Leisure Range cooker thing.

we had a baumatic range cooker, I changed 2 of the main oven elements myself, the grand total of 4 screws (including removing the back.
Mind you though, taking the back off revealed the true horrors of just how badly it had been put together.
Cheap nasty and hateful bit of kit, also baumatics are known for devouring elements.

If you hadn't moved away I could have done it for you. And I'd be willing to bet a new one wouldn't have been much more money than that repair. You don't have to put the same thing back you know...... 🙂

I did manage to put back the duff element in mine, screw the whole thing up, fit it back against the wall then get very annoyed I'd been sent a duff element. Then I realised what I'd done.... Doh!

I've used these for two different elements in my oven (bottom element and fan element):

http://www.elementman.co.uk/

Very easy to change, just a few screws and then push fit. Much easier than most bike servicing is!

just like the chief, I just unscrewed the cover at the back inside the oven, unscrewed the element and took of the 2 connecting wires and replaced it from I think elementman.

I am also a technically incompetent idiot that managed to replace an oven element without killing anyone, so it must be easy.

Yeah, changed an element here too.

Not hard. I wouldn't pay that for a call out especially to a companyt that doesn't phone me back!

Breaking News

Idiot c_g will be attempting to fit an element herself this morning. If I don't report back then I'm dead.

I haven't mentioned my bikes in my will ...

Trick is not to let the magic smoke out of the wires. You can never get it back in again and they don't work without it.

You will be fine CG,just take your time ,and maybe some pictures if you are bothered about how it was before you attacked it.
Let us know when you have something in the oven 🙂

If you can maintain bikes you can fit an oven element. They are normally designed to be changed easily.

Check the web for breakdown drawings - espares sometimes have them and also have how to videos.

CG- Good luck with the element change. Never done it but when our oven did not work MrPP came back to a new replacement. Feel your pain with hob cooking. I had to cope with a camping stove for weeks whilst we did our kitchen that is when I discovered microwave instructions on the back of new potatoes and our local sainsburys if you paid an extra £1 cooked your pizza for you! Failing that get your son or daughter to do that!

Thanks MrsP. 🙂 My eating habits have been pretty rubbish recently! My kids have no practical skills whatsoever but daughter will be helping with cooking tomorrow.

OK I'm unable to remove small panel that element slots into. There's two fixings and despite using screwdriver and pliers, they won't budge.

Removing the back panel achieves nothing, there's no way to get to them from there.

Have checked online and can't find anything specific, it's actually a grill element that heats oven with assistance from fan.

Now wondering whether the whole oven needs to be removed. A ponder is needed!
