I have a Sony NEX6 which I use mounted to an operating microscope (dentistry, root fillings!). Unfortunately my nurse dropped the lens I had, the standard 18-50, f3.5-5.6 that came with it. The whole lot was second hand so I can replace with similar but I wondered if there's a better option for taking clinical photos i.e. close ups of teeth and gums, etc. Most folk seem to use a ring flash too.

Any advice welcome!

The ring flash is usually used with a macro lens, specifically for taking close up work where the macro lens is both optimised for close focusing on the subject, and provides some degree of magnification, making the subject appear life size or large the life size. The ring flash, as I understand it, gives even and controlled light coverage for when you're focusing very close to the subject.

If you're already using a microsope I've no idea if a macro lens will give you any added benefit and to be honest, while a keen photographer myself, the subject of macro photography is quite specialist and I don't know enough about it to comment any more than this and add that good macro lenses are not cheap and if the the lens you were already working with is good enough, then I would suggest you simply replace like with like as a second hand replacement is likely to be sub £100 and a macro lens maybe a few hundred (though I am sure you can find cheap versions).

You can get ring flashes for sonys, and there are 30 & 90mm macro lenses in emount. Pretty much any macro lens ever made will work via an adapter. No idea what's best for teeth though.

Ok thanks for that and the Dyxum place looks interesting.

I should have been clearer. The camera is mounted to a microscope primarily for taking pictures down it and possibly feeding the image I see to a screen but obviously I can detach the body and use it normally with a lens. I just wondered whether there might be another lens, better suited for taking macro pictures but it looks like they might be much more expensive. Just me trying to make the best of an unfortunate incident 🙂

Ta.
