I have some pre Bluetooth Sonos Ones in the kitchen. I would like to stream directly from my phone - esp podcasts.
Try as I might I cannot get the BBC podcast I want to appear on Spotify through the Sonos app. I can do this directly on Spotify.
Sonos kept on referring me back to Tune-In.

I am slightly pissed off that the original Sonos One are now effectively obsolete.

1) is there anything I can add to stream directly via the speakers ( ie from airport expresses connected to an amp?)
2) are there now better products out there than Sonos... the whole integrated with my home system has never worked well, if will not recognise libraries on the main PC etc ... so suggestions?

Why is Spotify involved? Can't you just choose "on this mobile device" ?

Edit: looks like on this mobile device no longer available for Apple products

Obviously not - as they don’t have Bluetooth! Theses ate 5 or so year old one - not the latest Alexa / blue tooth ones ...
It has to link through a music source provider - or you own library ( which it has never been able to connect to)

Unless you can tell me something different.

Which podcast are you wanting and I’ll try on mine. I use the audible and Spotify functions in the Sonos app all the time with the old speakers and works fine. Tend to access all my podcasts via Spotify though. BBC have made a total hash of removing a lot of smart speaker functions. Drives me mad (we’ve given up on using Alexa to control our Sonos to play the radio).

Edit: actually I see that getting the BBC Newsroom programme that my brother presents, via the sonos app is still as impossible as ever. Grrr. Your right. Still annoying.

None of my devices support AirPlay, which is annoying. I also split off the original Gen1 5 into a Zone using S1. I think you have the Play One. I have these too and AirPlay is not supported. So you are out of luck I am afraid. Save them for eventual surround sound use.

I have this option, connects via wi-fi, no bluetooth. But reading around suggests iOS update killed that option for apple devices

You’ve never been able to steam directly to Sonos speaker especially via Bluetooth. You can on later models via airplay. It’s always only worked through the Sonos app.

Give up and just send me your old speakers.... I'll pay the postage

I use the S1 app and Spotify, the BBC sounds thing is annoying but not the end of the world

Moved to Pocket Casts years ago mostly for this - there's a Sonos service and it keeps position / up next lists etc consistent between devices. It's also a really good podcast player in its own right. https://www.pocketcasts.com/podcast-player/

Always been Airplay for casting (as long as one speaker in the group is new enough to do it), and way back you could effectively point the app at a file in the music library on your phone and play it that way - not seen that for ages.

That would suggest that if I bought one newer speaker it would be enough to be able to use airplay ( you are right , it’s not blue tooth)?

I had a similar issue, couldn’t stream BBC sounds to my old Play ones/older sonos 5.1 setup (a pair in one room and another pair as part of a 5.1 setup).

Bought a sonos amp and ceiling speakers for the new kitchen earlier this year before realising a few months later the sonos amp lets you airplay from BBC sounds to it which then lets me group the amp with the other rooms meaning I can now play BBC sounds wherever*

*My technical terminology may technically be incorrect but it all works as described.

And, when I ask alexa to play radio 1 in any room she still plays deep stuff radio instead (which may not be a bad thing for most people).

Yep, on the phone you just see the Airplay-enabled speakers but any groups you have set up on the Sonos side remain (if you have that set[1]). So if newspeaker is grouped with oldspeaker1 and oldspeaker2, you airplay to newspeaker and it plays on all three.

[1] if you prefer, you can have it set so starting airplay to a speaker drops it out of any group it was in.

You can also connect a Bluetooth AUX adapter to a Gen1 Sonos 5 and control it from your S1 app. I've used the line in with a cable. No reason why and adapter won't work as well. Pretty cheap option for us poverty first adopters.

Are you still using the Sonos S1 app?
S2 won’t work with the older speakers.

Any recommendations?

They all seem to need a battery or usb connection

I liked the £25 one on Amazon. Will be giving that a try. It’s mains and will plug in next to the 5. Annoyingly I can’t now group with the rest as I had an S2 update pushed to all the others!

This one looks fine.

Are your speakers Sonos One or Play:1?

I have a pair of Play:1 speakers, a Play:3 and a Playbar and use the S1 app. It gives me a warning every now and again saying that not all functions of the S2 app will work with my speakers.
I have had a look on the Sonos site and I think this may be due to the fact I am using a Bridge.

OK. The whole BBC sounds podcast thing has been an annoyance to Sonos owners since the beginning. Not all shows appear on Tunein, and it's not easy to cast / bluetooth audio to most Sonos devices.

In the BBC Sounds app the only option is to use Chromecast (or possibly Airplay? Don't know don't use Apple devices).

You can only cast to a Sonos device with an Aux in (Sonos 5?) or a TV Bar if it has a Chromecast on the TV.

That said. If you have the Spotify app on your phone there is a way of transmitting direct from the Spotify app to your Sonos device. So instead of looking in the Sonos app fire up your Spotify app on your phone or tablet. Play your music bottom left there's an option to 'select device' your Sonos should show up there? Select the device and job's a goodun.

Got up to speed last night with this. No opportunity for aux Bluetooth, as on the Play:1 there is no aux socket. Don’t have a Sonos amp nor a bridge thang. The cheapest way to address this will be to but a new Sonos One - and use it a linked pair in the kitchen with the old “play:1” - if that works ...

If there was an aux I could use an apple airport express ...

As I could never access my library I would still like thoughts on alternative Bluetooth speakers that I can have a stereo pair.

Connecting to a shared library on a nas/pc/Mac is relatively easy.

What issues are you experiencing?

Going into the Sonos app on my Mac, selected music library (on out board disc). It selects the library - and then steadfastly refuses to import and update ...

I've seen something like this before. I think in Windows it needs a mapped drive, on IOS you need to setup a symbolic link to the drive then select the library via the symlink not the drive.

Thanks - I had tries all the above - with not a lot os success. And again today

But with the Sonos App open, I deleted the old "library" , closed Sonos app, and reloaded the library pathway ...

It now tells me it is indexing ....
Which seems like a good thing!

Top tip ...

Glad you got it sorted.

Going back to the BBC Sounds app thing I learnt a few things yesterday:

- I didn't realise you could get BBC Sounds podcasts etc on Spotify.
- There is definitely something going on with BBC Sounds and Sonos. I found a podcast on Spotify android app but when I used the select device the Sonos options are greyed out, only the Chromecast options are available. I can only assume this is something to do with managing internationally which they can do from the Sounds app but not via Sonos or the Spotify app.

Bit crap really I have a Play 5 so have an aux in but that's an expensive way of going if you just want BBC Sounds on demand via the Sonos...

Is it worth getting a Sonos amp to use with poverty legacy Sonos speakers to improve functionality?

I have a Sonos 5 and a Play Bar

Just to add a voice for PocketCasts somebody else mentioned ^^.

The app on IOS/android is good, has all the BBC content (they might have invested, hazy memory) and you can pick up on where you left off on mobile app once you’ve added it as a service to Sonos.

It’s not good for new podcast discovery, but you can do all of that in the app on your mobile/tablet, but smooth and very easy for listening to the stuff you subscribe to or for picking up new episodes of those you’ve already listened to.

Another Sonos question...

In our house we have three Sonos ZP120 and three Sonos ZP90. All were in the house before we, and the previous owners moved in.

In the notes that came with the house there was something along the lines of "Sonos all works, but don't blame us for the terrible music that we can't get rid of, lol".

Sure enough, viewable in the Music Library in the S1 app, there are the complete Akon and Pitbull back catalogues. I can play them throughout the house, but can't find a way to delete them.

As far as I'm aware, none of the units are plugged in to a computer with a music library.
Where is Akon, and how do I get rid of him?
