Following on from the misinterpreted songs thread, are there any songs that don't seem to mean anything or don't make any sense, even after you've read the lyrics?

Brimful of Asha

(yes i know it's about some actress and that, but how??)

Most songs to be honest.

English literature has never been one of my strong points.

It refers to the Bolywood singer Asha Bhosle who sang in many films - often they were about love hope an ddreams so it is a bit of a pun/metaphopr fopr that as well.
My mates were mates with the band even though I was not.
I bet he ripped it off someone and claimed it as his own work as well - he had form for that

I'll tell you what I want, what I really really want,
So tell me what you want, what you really really want,
I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna really
really really wanna zigazig ha.

i dont get that but that is because it is incomprehensible drivel.

Going old-skool, Informer by Snow. Never did figure all the words out, but it does feature the line "pull down me pants, look up me bottom". I think...

Junkyard, about sex, as if you didn't know. 😀

Bloodhound Gang, Bad Touch, I knew all the lyrics when I was about 8 or 9, had absolutely *no* idea what it was about. My mum wasn't impressed! 😆

Yes, I've heard that. But I can't see how that song is about her

They are women. They don't know what they really want. Or if they do then they can't express it. This is normal. 😀

Not that I don't 'understand' it, more I don't understand WHY...

Fishheads by Barnes and Barnes. Seriously mental.

Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

Never made sense & then there was a big reveal in Kerrang! to explain what the lyrics meant, and they pretty much said that it wasn't intended to make sense, but was just a load of words, with the name of the song being a brand of deodorant, I think.

A lot of early David Bowie.

Write lyrics for entire album. Cut them up into sentences.
Select 30 randomly.
Arrange into song. 🙂

Don't get me wrong, I love Bowie, but he's a bit hatstand sometimes.

Oh and almost everything by Captain Beefheart, Duran Duran and that song by Kajagoogoo.

I suspect that one day it will be revealed as the most meaningful song ever written. Or summink. Mad as a badger anyway

Every day, I get up and pray to Jah
And he decreases the number of clocks by exactly one
Everybody's comin' home for lunch these days
Last night there were skinheads on my lawn
Take the skinheads bowling
Take them bowling
Take the skinheads bowling
Take them bowling
Some people say that bowling alleys got big lanes
Some people say that bowling alleys all look the same
There's not a line that goes here that rhymes with anything
I has a dream last night, but I forget what it was
I had a dream last night about you, my friend
I had a dream--I wanted to sleep next to plastic
I had a dream--I wanted to lick your knees
I had a dream--it was about nothing

I thought The Police "da dodo do" song was pointless BUT...

Read on dear fellows:

Don't think me unkind
Words are hard to find
They're only cheques I've left unsigned
From the banks of chaos in my mind
And when their eloquence escapes me
Their logic ties me up and rapes me

De do do do, de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do, de da da da
Their innocence will pull me through
De do do do, de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do, de da da da
They're meaningless and all that's true

Poets, priests and politicians
Have words to thank for their positions
Words that scream for your submission
And no-one's jamming their transmission
And when their eloquence escapes you
Their logic ties you up and rapes you

De do do do, de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do, de da da da
Their innocence will pull me through
De do do do, de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do, de da da da
They're meaningless and all that's true

De do do do, de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do, de da da da
Their innocence will pull me through
De do do do, de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do, de da da da
They're meaningless and all that's true

Junkyard, about sex, as if you didn't know.

I rather prefer GrahamS explanation of confused in articulate young ladies like yourself emsz 😉
Seriously I had not actually realised that it was child friendly censoring of what “Girl Power” meant 😳

binners, here is the official word on the meaning of Take The Skinheads Bowling:

...we regarded Take The Skinheads Bowling as just a weird non-sensical song. The lyrics were purposely structured so that it would be devoid of meaning. Each subsequent line would undermine any sort of meaning established by the last line. It was the early 80?s and all our peers were writing songs that were full of meaning. It was our way of rebelling. BTW this is the most important fact about this song. We wanted the words to lack any coherent meaning. There is no story or deeper insight that I can give you about this song.

Taken from this entry in David Lowry's blog, which can be an interesting read if you have too much time on your hands.

Cheers for that Chris! The Blog looks worth a read.

I love the song! And now I know it was just meant to be deliberately nonsensical, I like it even more!

Like when the enigmatic Mr Cantona gave his famous "When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea." quote

Years later, when asked to explain what it meant, he said it meant absolutely nothing, but he said it as he knew it would shut all the assembled journalists up, leaving them bemused while he just stood up and walked out

Worked a treat! 😀

Really.. not even with the rap bit:

So here's a story from A to Z,
you wanna get with me
you gotta listen carefully,
We got Em in the place who likes it in her face,
we got G like MC who likes it on her knees.
Easy V doesn't cum for free, she's a real lady,
and as for me..ah you'll see,

😉

god, the absolute last thing we need is a Spice girls appreciation thread on here

Reads just a little better now.

I never did understand the Spice Girls. Nowt wrong with cheesy pop, but terrible cheesy pop is another thing entirely. They were so terrible they make Girls Aloud seem almost talented in comparison, and that's not something you hear every day.

Sorry to trample on your memories, but sometimes you just have to realise that your idols have feet of clay. Or, in Victoria's case, two feet of clay - at least when 'dancing' on stage. I've seen hippogriffs move more gracefully. Come to think of it, I've heard hippogriffs sing better......

S'Ok nickf I was too young really, Geri left when I was about 10 I think, I remember it on Newsround, and being devestated!! LOL (there's a vid of me prancing about in the living room in a union jack minidress somewhere 😳 )

It was only later I bothered learning some of the lyrics when I learning the songs on my guitar, 😯 I hope my mum never finds out

I have never seen the video and i bow to your greater knowledge of the lyrics - are they actually real the ones above? In my defence [ do I really need to defend not knowing spice girl lyrics? I was travelling abroad when this tour de force hit our streets and have only ever heard bits of them /it - not my thing for fairly obvious reasons.

I had a copy of Club magazine what I nicked off a mate, had pics of Geri Halliwell before she was famous, what she originally done for some Turkish grot mayg apparently.

I just said that out loud, din't I? 😳

I can't say I was in any way particularly stimulated by either the pics or her/their music tbh.

As I type this, 'Only in My Dreams' by Debbie Gibson is playing on my iTunes. How on Earth it got there I have no idea. 😕

Bloody hell. 1987. Before little Emsz was even born. 😯

Am I really that old? 😥

(Sobs into pillow)

Elf, just ask yourself what age you'll be at your next birthday.

Rhymes with 'naughty', doesn't it?

Edit: you think you're old. I left university in 1987....

It does, it does. Hmm, that puts a new spin on things actually. I think I'll start behaving worse from now on, degenerate rather than mature. Hope to be sitting laughing in my own poo within a decade or two tops. I mean, babies do and they're pretty happy, right?

Edit: you think you're old. I left university in 1987...

Mr Farrimond; thank you for you have cheered me up somewhat. 😀

Good Lord; you've got it all to come, Emsz. Enjoy! 😀

No, I think he's turning Japanese at the thought of Baby Spice doing something somewhat at odds with her cutesy-little-girl image.

In response i would refer you to the case of Arkell v. Pressdram (1971) followed by an alleged word from a CBBC song 😀

Starship's 'we built this city out of rock and roll'. Now that's an indecipherable song.

Maybe there are levels to that song I don't understand. But it sounds like their claim is that they built a city out of rock and roll. 😕

'Nemesis', by Shriekback, great song, but....

In a jungle of the senses
Tinkerbell and Jack the ripper
Love has no meaning, not where they come from
But we know pleasure is not that simple
Very little fruit is forbidden
Sometimes we wobble, sometimes we're strong
But you know evil is an exact science
Being carefully correctly wrong

Priests and cannibals, prehistoric animals
Everybody happy as the dead come home
Big Black Nemesis, parthenogenesis
No one move a muscle as the dead come home

We feel like Greeks, we feel like Romans
Centaurs and monkeys just cluster round us
We drink elixirs that we refine
from the juices of the dying
We are not monsters, we're moral people
and yet we have the strength to do this
This is the splendour of our achievement
Call in the airstrike with a poison kiss

How bad it gets, you can't imagine
the burning wax, the breath of reptiles
god is not mocked, he knows our business
Karma could take us at any moment
Cover him up.....I think we're finished
You know it's never been so exotic
but I don't know, my dreams are visions
We could still end up with the great big fishes
