Live Era Guns and Roses version of Knockin' on Heaven's Door.
Tracy and Roberta. Serious lungs.
Denise Johnson on "Don't Fight It Feel It" (Primal Scream)
Rowetta on Step On (Mondays)

Kate Pierson of the B52's makes Stipe sound like the droning robot he is.
Kimbra on Gotye - Somebody that I used to know
Came to answer Gimme Shelter before I opened the thread.
Temptation - Heaven 17. Caron Kenyon is magnificent.
Current song Karen O - YO! MY SAINT (feat. Michael Kiwanuka)
Came to answer Gimme Shelter before I opened the thread.
Me too! There was a great story about her recording that, getting the call at 1am or something & going down to the studio in her rollers & night ware... She's also got a version that is well worth your time
Good shout above for the Great Gig In The Sky ..Clare Torry got paid a one off fee for her " vocals " back in 1973.
Fast forward to The Earls Court gig(s) in 1994 and there were three backing singers each having a section each ..Claudia Fontaine , Durga McBroom and the best known of all Sam Brown who had her own solo career hit with " Stop " ..which in turn has been covered more recently by Joe Bonamassa..
I was there for the last gig at Earls Court and just about every hair on my body was standing on end when that was played ..with silent tears streaming down my face through Wish You Were Here & Comfortably Numb ..
It stands alone as THE best gig I've been to.
Kate Pierson of the B52’s makes Stipe sound like the droning robot he is.
His la la la backing on Robyn Hitchcock's She Doesn't Exist Anymore is utterly sublime, makes the song and carries an emotional depth very few could ever get close to given the use of every word in every language
Carly Simon's 'You're so vain' with MJ wailing in the background.
Sheryl Crow on "American Girls" by Counting Crows
I was thinking of another Kate Pierson, her backing vocals to Rock Lobster.
Particularly the 'here comes a stingray, there goes a manta-ray' bit:
Reni any stone roses song 😉
Faith Evans on Puff Daddys "I'll be missing you"
Over 20 years ago now since the songs release, jeez where does the time go?
I clicked in the thread to mention Caron Kenyon on Heaven 17's Temptation but as TiRed has beat me to it I'll sheepishly mention Helen Terry on Church of The Poison Mind.
Cissy Houston, Are you lonesome tonight when Elvis cracks up struggling to sing
Ofra Haza in Temple of Love and Terri Nunn in Under the Gun on Sisters of Mercy Slight Case of Overbombing.
Does "one" by U2 featuring Mary j Blige count?
Good shout above for the Great Gig In The Sky ..Clare Torry got paid a one off fee for her ” vocals ” back in 1973...
Although she subsequently pursued, and got a writing credit - the track's now credited jointly to her and Rick Wright.
Therefore it doesn't qualify under terms of the thread - and to be fair even in the absence of that credit, you could hardly describe it is as "backing" - it's clearly a lead vocal.
Bez!
Kate Pierson. The song is basically irrelevant.
Not sure if it's backing vocal, or if he sings the chorus.. but without Jack White, Electric Six might never have been heard of 🙂
20 feet from Stardom is the film to look for on Netflix (if it's still on there) to see loads of great backing vocaliats
Great shout on Ofra Haza.
Also Oleta Adams on Tears For Fears '''Woman In Chains'.
Without Martha Wainwright this would be mawkish nonsense. With her it gives me chills.
Also, Jen Wood is amazing on 'Nothing Better;
That's the way (I'm only trying to help you) - Culture Club (Helen Terry)

Yes - exactly the example I was thinking of also. Ironically enough, that bit where her voice cracks is about as perfect as it gets.
More about that story on the doc: 20 Feet from Stardom. Worth a watch.
Good info there edlong ..I hadn't realised that .
Agree with regard to the fact that the vocal is very much front & centre and is a "lead"
Where's the line between backing vocals and a duet? Some great suggestions here but they probably step over it...
Bowie on the Motts version of All The Young Dudes
Rowetta and the Happy Mondays
Emmylou Harris on Ryan Adams' 'Sweet Carolina'
Also, for entirely different reasons that may or may not be cheating in this topic, Dolly Parton on Mindy Smith's cover of 'Jolene'

Did a similar job on Lou Reed's Satellite of Love too. Maybe doesn't steal the song, but certainly adds something distinctive that no one else could have.

That Elvis one which has him in stitches, she is so obviously out of tune but very enthusiastic. Can't remember off the top of my head.
OK, for stage presence and steeling the show, rather than specific backing vocals. The band was found out to be a bit crap after she and Lemmy left anyway.

Eminem n Dido Stan ?
Drivers Seat by Sniff n the Tears, backing vocals by Noel McCalla
Kim Deale on most of the best Pixies tracks
Definitely fits the bill. First time I heard her, and she went on to take the World... The band..?
