Murdered by Talking Heads.
Black Betty Leadbelly
Fortunately I've not heard the talking heads version.
Dolly not Whitney
and Gloria not Marc or Marilyn
Bloody hell, Take me to the River by the Talking Heads is epic.
Most covers I count as a murder though. The biggest exception is "'Long As I Can See the Light" by Creedance Clearwater Revival.....beats Screamin' Jay Hawkins original. Might have it played at my funeral (if I ever die).
Fortunately I've not heard the talking heads version.
I'd keep it that way if I were you
So beautifully haunting compared to the more famous cover,
Al's is best, but I like the Talking Heads version. Thanks for that, sbob, news to me.
I do remember someone substantially younger than me commenting on how poor the "cover" version of "Light My Fire" I had on on a compilation CD was - they much preferred the original Will Young version (winner of the first UK pop idol I think).....bit tough on The Doors I guess - nearly ejected the young man onto a busy A5
there were a load on bbc4 last night too.
must admit I am a bit of a nerd for covers (as in knowing that they are, and then going back and listening to the original), but in my teens plenty slipped me by. (home taping, no liner notes etc I am sure!) Eg I used to think 'waiting for the man' was one of Bauhaus' worse songs before I realised. And 'Blinded by the light' I thought was by Manfred Mann rather than The Boss the year before.
At work the other day, the 'non-cover' of Forever Young by Dylan and 'Forever Young' by Alphaville came up. Yes they are different.
Everyone thinks Johnny Cash's "hurt" is his song. It's not.
As someone who loves NIN and isn't so keen on Cash this annoys me.
Does Shipbuilding by Elvis Costello not Robert Wyatt count?
The first time ever I saw your face was recorded by a number of artists before Roberta Flack had a big hit with it. I rather like the Stereophonics version.
Valerie was originally sung by the zutons, not amy winehouse
my memory says Robert Wyatt's single predated Elvis Costello's version which appeared only as an album track? - Costello of course wrote it but I'm not sure why actually bothered to include it on a later album
here's one from when I was a nipper
many years later I heard the original on Bob Dylan and the Band's Big Pink
Björk - It's Oh So Quiet
Originally by Betty Hutton
Murdered by Robbie Williams
The greatest contribution to music by Gloria Jones was to crash the car that killed Marc Bolan .
Hey Joe - The Leaves
Oor Jimi
This Yardbirds version of Dazed and Confused weirds me out because I'm so used to the Led Zeppelin version (Jimmy Page was in both bands so I'm guessing he took the song with him)
Dazed and confused was written and originally performed by Jake Holmes - he opened for the Yardbirds and settled out of court with Led Zeppelin around 2010
The Clash, robbin Bstards
hey, Bananaman… that's a cover as well
as for the original post… I much prefer the Talking Heads cover
Nirvana recycled a few of the Vaselines songs.
Ramsey Neil - MemberThe greatest contribution to music by Gloria Jones was to crash the car that killed Marc Bolan .
Bit harsh.
Written by Lemmy, last song he did for Hawkwind, I think.
Loved it when I first heard it as a kid, had only heard the faster one.
Prefer it to the Motorhead version, unless very drunk.
We had the live version of "heartbeats" by The Knife for our first dance. Got quite confusing when people said they preferred the original, then looked at me funny when I said the album version was a bit too jazzy for a first dance.
I had no idea Jose Gonzalez had covered it and that it had been on an advert for TVs, so everyone thought The Knife had covered his song.
This post makes me sound like the king of the hipsters...

lovely song though
Never knew.
Ramsey Neil, I hope we never meet.
Rusty, first heard that on radmac during the week, along with the meaning of "motorhead". I'm still learning 😳

Costello's version is technically the cover, he wrote it for Robert, and later included it on All This Useless Beauty, an album of songs he'd written for, or in collaboration with, other artists but never recorded himself, like The Other End Of The Telescope he co-wrote with Aimee Mann, and You Bowed Down, which he wrote for Roger McGuinn of The Byrds.
There's a huge number of songs which are covers that most people don't realise are covers, like Without You for example.
Sadly the video of Badfinger's original isn't available
Anyone recognise this?
Sung by Shawn Colvin, who's always done interesting covers.
Frankie Valli cover:

As was Bye Bye Baby (Baby Goodbye) Bay City Rollers
and loads of other gems!
Bugger me! I never knew this was the cover!

In that he was a speed freak, they were stoners or something, not sure exactly. The popular history being his drug of choice wasn't theirs so he got fired. Not sure if it's true or was just jealousy of the fact that he was writing some decent stuff.
hey, Bananaman… that's a cover as well
Ah, thanks for pointing that out, I didn't know.
