any tunes bring a tear to your eye.
come on dont be shy.
I've just heard the new Levellers tune on Six music. Wept like a baby, I did
Pink Floyd's Shine on you Crazy Diamond.
Had it plying the whole way through the sevice as Dad was cremeated..
Still love the tune tho'.
Champagne Supernova, and I've no idea why.
Same as Teetosugars. The old sod asked for it (and he knows we all like Pink Floyd) so we are constantly reminded of him.
Going to see Aussie Pink Floyd with one of my brothers in a couple of weeks - we'll be raising a glass to dad when they play it.
I'm a bit of a sucker for a moving tune.. it's often the music and not the lyrics for me though..
"Lately" by Stevie Wonder.
"I had the Time of My Life" for some odd reason, seems to me to be a "goodbye" song.
"Just the Morning" by Lyle Lovett also
Nimrod, from the Enigma Variations, by Elgar.
Unstoppable, floods of tears.
Couple of lines in this can get me all moist-eyed...
Every time.
Athlete - Wires used to, not so much now. Its about his newborn son being rushed to ICU at Xmas, same thing happend to me, also at Xmas...
Pretty much the whole of Astral Weeks but particularly Madame George.
Mods - FFS! Surely James Blunt references are an immediate ban?
Follow you into the dark - Death cab for cutie.
&
One day like this - elbow
Both on the ipod playlist in the delivery suite before we lost our son. Very painful memories, either come on i have to leave the room or turn off. Just thinking about them is making me well up.
Shining light - Ash. played at my sis-in-laws boyfriends funeral. Nice guy taken too early. Song gets me every time.
Kate Rusby - my young man. Also, and I'm not sure why, nightswimming by REM
Two little boys
The Genius that is Rolf Harris -
Killing me softly with his song.
Telling my life with his words.
Including Jake The Peg
"into your arms" Nick Cave
"Martha" Tom Waits
and after refreshments....."stand by you" pretenders
Ah, Tom Waits...
Getting Away With It - James.
Unlikely, I know, but all sorts of deep, dark personal reasons that mean I escaped a troubled time. Speaks to me of a rush into the light.
Ah, Tom Waits...
Ah indeed. Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis is another tear jerker dressed up as humour.
If 'Two Little Boys' by Rolf Harris comes on the radio when I am in the car on my own, I cry like a baby.
It was about two years ago when I first listened to the words properly.
Played at a funeral of a friendly pub landlord , after he decided life wasn't worth carrying on with.
The Smiths - Asleep
Elbow - Newborn
Both about death, cheery soul that I am.
Oh and Dubstar - Stars, no idea why, possibly associated with a bit of a lonely time in my life.
DJ Hixxy
Well, that was just bound not to work wasn't it? It's Shooting Star by DJ Hixxy if anyone can be bothered to make it happen for me - thanks
Hurt- Johnny cash
Embrace - Gravity
Two Little Boys.
Band played Waltzing Matilda
the new Van Halen single Tattoo..
unspeakable awfulness from a previously groundbreaking, inspiring group.
I know thats not what you meant...!
any dream will do from the musical joseph.
reminds me of a boy at my school who blew his brains out with a shotgun because he was bullied. more than 30 years later I am still haunted that I didnt stop the bullies.
Cowboy Song by Thin Lizzy from Live & Dangerous invariably does it for me.
No Sheep Till Buxton, by the Macc Lads.
Its the dog bit 😳
The Green Fields of France
And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda
Restless Natives
Calon Lan
Cyndi Lauper - Time after time.
Chokes me up.
Everybody Hurts - REM
Dire Straits - Bothers In Arms.
Especially poignant this week as one of my distant relatives was killed in Afghanistan on Monday.
RIP Ryan, much respect...
Knocking On Heaven's Door - Warren Zevon
The Wind (the album it came from) was released two weeks before he died of cancer. He knew exactly what was coming, and it shows in the performance. He's doing his best to give two fingers to cancer, and it doesn't quite work.
The Man Comes Around - Johnny Cash
Another song about impending death, and like Zevon's performance, Cash's voice has a fragility that perversely is the song's real strength.
Both of them are remarkable, and both have me blubbing like a three year-old.
[Edit - +1 for the Brothers In Arms comment. Knopfler's unfairly overlooked.]
brings back memories of my son leaving home at 17 to become a father.
This woman's work by Kate Bush
[url=
Cassidy - Fields of Gold
Played at my good friends brothers funeral. He was 25 and killed in a motorcycle accident. Wasn't a dry eye in the place, RIP Ryan.
My Old Man - Ian Dury and the Blockheads sublimely touching
Cliched, probably, but it means a hell of a lot to me.
Bit of classical class esp. for CFH.
That'll be all the tracks I played last night then 😥 👿
Silver Springs - Fleetwood Mac
Wonerful world by Louis Armstrong
Alice in chains - Black gives way to blue:
Thank you singletrackmind. What a fabulous piece of music, so good I downloaded the album
Friends - The Beatles , the Wet Wet Wet version doesn't do it though.
As with many of the above it's a funeral song , a really good mate who was killed in a motorbike accident when I was 17. He was just about the only person I've ever met in my life that had no enemies ,the crematorium had a crowd stood outside as there wasn't room inside for everybody.
Adele - Set Fire to the Rain
Flowers of the forest
This does it for me...
[url=
from Black Hawk Down
The state I am in by Belle and Sebastian gets me going plus time to kill by mr Cash as these got played quite a bit when a good friend had cancer.
"My immortal" by Evanescence.
"Ava Maria" version by Aaron Neville.
ah tutti contenti from the marraige of figaro
fields of gold by eva cassidy
A lot of Richard Thompson stuff bring a tear to my eye...'How Will I Ever be Simple Again' being one.
However 'Sunset' when played by the Royal Marines gets me every single time I hear it.
Daddy Sang Bass - Johnny Cash. Reminds me of my fantastic late grandparents.
Paradise - Richard Ashcroft. Makes me think about the birth of my daughter.
Going to get some stick for this one but... Unknown Caller by U2. The line in there saying "Shout for joy - if you get the chance!" I always think of my miracle twin boys - who shouldn't be here, but for whom each day is a chance for happiness...
wednesday week by the undertones.
was played at my aunt's funeral, she was very loved and died way too young. not a dry eye in the place.
Follow you, follow me, Genesis (from "And then there were three")
I'm not blubbing for anyone but Two Little Boys it has to be. I was about 4 when it came out and anyone who had a brother at that time, the song was written just for them.
Also God Save The Queen , Advance Australia Fair and Waltzing Matilda. Waltzing Matilda is a strong contender at my funeral. A whole new thread waiting to be done.
Green Spandex by Xavier Rudd:
A Sorta Fairytale by Tori Amos, particularly because I first listened to it on the day of the funeral of my brother's partner:
Tom Wait's Martha has already been mentioned but is crushingly beautiful as is Loudon Wainwright's A Pretty Good Day, Jonny Cash's cover of Hurt also
Hurt - Johnny Cash
Tired of you _ Foo Fighters
At your funeral - Saves The Day.
Currently the unprintable ****ed Up, with One More Night. There's just something about a furious 300 lb man bellowing a love song that's strangely irresistable. Maybe it's because it takes some effort to decipher the lyrics.
"Always somewhere" by the Scorpions
sad pathetic memories of splitting with my first girlfriend
Two Little Boys always gets me too!
Johnny Cash - Hurt, for reasons I can't talk about on here.
Guns N Roses - Patience.
Tracy Chapman - Baby Can I Hold You.
Extreme - More Than Words.
Black Sabbath - Changes.
To name a few.
A lot has been going on in my life of late, but all is good now
Just heard this on the Folk Awards show, powerful stuff...
Cavalleria Rusticana,Intermezzo by Mascagne, played at mother in laws funeral. Didn't even really like her. For the unwashed among you it's in Raging Bull.
Singletrackmind, lovely bit of Puccini.
Natalie Merchant, My Beloved Wife
Natalie Merchant, My Beloved Wife
+1
Also....
The bit in the film "She's having a baby" always gets me...
I fell for this one the first time I heard it on The Mentalist - Peter Bradley Adams - Darkening Sky
I was sort of half joking with 2 little boys earlier (though it sure is bit of a spine tingled at times) but thinking about it Rolf seems to have bit of a tallent with emotional songs. I first saw this one Christmas eve round my man's house when I was a kid. She sadly died late last year and this thread popping up and seeing her house go on the market today made me remeber this song.
Dam you Rolf you nearly got me this time!
The old boy croaked just after Rolf shuts the door at the end in the film!
The song at the end of Gladiator.
Cloud of Unknowing by the Gorillaz.
