My 9yo daughter hates people singing, if you can see them doing it. If it's audio only e.g. radio it's fine. If I break into song she tells me to stop. Gramps sings a lot, and she really hates this. Her sister gets a 'shut up' as soon as she draws breath.
The Last Showman is on downstairs and she's lost her shit. Anyone else heard of this kind of phobia? I haven't tried her with proper live performances.
Nope, your daughter is absolutely brilliant at judging.
Two reasons:
1. You cannot sing.
2. There are no singing tradition in your family.
I absolutely hate people singing ... Except listening, not live, to ABBA, Bee Gees ... arrggghh ... struggling to think of others ... arrgghh ...
😀
Fo’ Yo’ Do’
This is much better than any of those singing ... eddiebaby agrees.
Doesn't matter who is singing. She likes some absolute shit on the radio. But she can't stand anyone actually singing.
TBH I'm struggling with The Greatest Showman. The songs are excruciating even for me.

Yep, same here I just cannot stand people singing ... absolute hate it.
I just cannot stand it not sure why and I only listen to very limited kind of music... very limited.
Just a phase, maybe she’s Beyoncé in waiting 👍🤠💃

I think this is my favourite line on here, ever. Possibly on the whole internet. 🙂
I have a song phobia. Every time I hear the first few bars of the Archers on R4 I get the shivers and have to switch channels or turn the radio off!!
Sorry, Greatest Showman, not Last. That was bloody awful.
Maybe she's just got musically talented ears? I suspect that few people sing with an accurate awareness of how well they sing, maybe her ears are great, the people she has heard are gash and it's just offending her? I used to think I could sing (I now categorise myself as almost being able to hold a tune) until I dabbled with a choral society and met people who really COULD sing. Then I realised I was a bit poor. 🙂 But people who haven't had their aspirations dashed like I did will still think they can sing (again, like I did) and may do so with great vigour (again...) - if she's got the natural born ears to know it sounds bad, maybe that's why she don't like it. 🙂
Never heard of anything like that before. Could it just be a phase? Although I fully understand and indeed share her reaction to The Greatest Showman. Musicals in general are the devils work, but that one is something truly special and not in a birthday way.
I don't mind songs on the radio, but musicals and anyone singing in my near vacinity, it makes me feel really uncomfortable and awkward.
To be fair it sounds perfectly normal to lose your shit if you've been made to watch the greatest showman.
edit.
It’s whistling that gets me!
Maybe she’s got the same hearing issue as me.. when you hear something bad (eg. Elton John, Robbie Williams) it gives your ears a comparitive (is that a word?) reaction to your nose when you smell vomit or shit.
Yes dez . Exactly that. I am afraid that if the bbc play another new cliff Richard song I may lose my shit too. Or at least drive my fm only radio into a central reservation.
She possibly has good taste.
🙂
Not a useful contribution but if I hear anything by the Beach Boys, my hair ignites.
I can’t help but imagine that certain people on here might spontaneously combust on hearing Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen or Bob Dylan singing...
Woohoo...I'm picking up good vibrations from this thread.
I can’t help but imagine that certain people on here might spontaneously combust on hearing any Flowdan, Skepta or Vince Staples 😂
I think that it's a sort of projection of embarrassment. She's extremely empathetic so when she sees someone singing a song she puts herself in their position. And since she's not a good singer and acutely self-conscious, she feels the embarrassment she would feel if she were doing it herself. If that makes sense. That's certainly how I feel when I see someone making a fool of themselves on telly or in public, but for me it's not a problem when I recognise that the person does know what they are doing e.g. a professional musician.

i think that's probably quite an astute assessment. A form of vicarious embarrassment, or fear of it.
I imagine you've tried to explain that e.g. Grandpa has a nice voice, and the rest of the family like it when he sings (white lies may be required!!) and it would be nice if she'd let him enjoy himself. In other words, gently remind her that other people have different perspectives to her own...?
Re: Molgrips, yeah, that does make sense, as doris5000 neatly sums up. Hadn’t occurred to me, I rarely feel that, not being able to carry a tune in a bucket myself; anyone who can, even slightly, gets respect for standing up and singing in front of an audience.
Kids come up with all sorts of weird shit. You can either try to change the world so that she never hears anyone singing, or just tell her to get on with it.
