We're driving down to Chatel in August and don't want to do the whole ~9 hour drive from the end of the tunnel in one hit.

Any recommendations on where we can stay? Needs to be cheapish and suitable for 4 adults and 4 under 7s. We'd rather stay somewhere a little more characterful than a formula 1.

Cheers ...

We stayed here: http://www.etaphotel.com/gb/hotel-6016-etap-hotel-nuits-saint-georges-futur-ibis-budget/index.shtml on the way to morzine. I wouldn't say that it has any character but it's almost as cheap as a formula 1, but a bit nicer with a shower and toilet in the room rather than having shared ones. It was about 6 hours from dunkirk, and 3.5 hours to morzine the next day (time to chatel will be pretty much the same). The all you can eat breakfast was pretty good too 🙂

I stayed in Troyes once on the way back from Morzine. Might be nearer half way across France. Nice place, mediaeval walled town with some very eccentric museums. And a nice Chinese on the edge of the centre. French Chinese tho, so the duck was amazing !

Troyes is nice. We've stayed there too. A 'Logis' maybe more to your liking - we stayed in a 'travellodge' next to the station though.
