looking for a week away in july, hopefully a city with a beach, and warm.
just had a week in porto, it was very nice, been to Barcelona, been to palma, been to biaritz.
fancy Valencia or Malaga possibly.
anywhere really nice come to mind.....please?
Valleta?
Rome.
Bollocks to the beach.
I like a day on the beach and a swim in the sea,
Edinburgh?
Nice and sunny, lovely beach at portobello.
Malaga is surprisingly nice. An old city with some very pretty bits. Obviously lots of Brits abroad stuff not far along the coast but the city itself is quite pleasant. Some good biking a short trip inland, too.
I like a day on the beach and a swim in the sea,
Dubrovnik then
Verona? You're an hour away from the lakes for your swim and it's a lovely city in its own right.
Nice? You can enjoy a dip in The Med that way.
Gdansk. I'll let you know how it is in 4 weeks.
St Davids in Pembrokeshire
Best City in the UK...plenty of nearby top beaches
Greenock.
Greenock.
You must have misheard, he said city
Valencia is an excellent city
+1 for Valencia.
+1 for Lisbon & Cascais / Estoril
Nice.
Got to be San Sebastian.
Malaga.
Malaga, and do some day trips to the surrounding towns while you're there.
Doesn’t Barcelona have beaches? They may be man made but I’m sure it does.
Got to be San Sebastian.
+1
Malaga
Eat at Cervantes
Drink at La Tranca
Grilled fish on the beach
Bullring if you're so inclined
Live performances at the flamenco museum
Ace climate and not knockout hot like Seville
some left field options:
Helsinki: https://goo.gl/maps/T6oyf3navXR2
Friedrichshafen: https://goo.gl/maps/yFmMer2i92y
more seriously:
+1 for Malaga, a very beautiful, modern European city..
Further along the coast is Nerja, which has some amazing beaches, not sure it counts as a City, but the town is pretty big.
I'd avoid anywhere in Italy as its all a bit: "if Ryanair did beaches".
What's does the city need to have in it?
I think somewhere like Sicily is amazing.
Syracuse or Taormina or just up the hill (and nicer for it) Castelmola with stunning countryside and hills around
Also Sardinia has some towns with lovely beaches just outside.
ha. Was gonna suggest that as I was there last week! Only a short cycle to Whitesands Bay which is an amazing beach. Or Tenby. Nice beach, couple of breweries which I'm sure OP would appreciate. Not a city though.St Davids in Pembrokeshire
Best City in the UK…plenty of nearby top beaches
Vigo
Lisbon
A Caruna
Pontevedra
San Sebastián
Portimao
Lagos
Cadiz/Jerez
All of which offer big city life and beaches.
Gdansk another vote. Was there last week in the city ( lovely/ amazing old town ) then out to a place called Sopot which is 20 mins out of town on the coast, and very cool and cheap. Do not drink too much vodka..
Vancouver.
Just come back from two weeks working in Valencia. Loved the place, can’t recommend it enough
It may not be as warm - but I was totally taken by Estonia last week. Tallin is lovely, and the nearby beaches and bog(!) were teh awesome swimming. For reference, the Baltic is warmer that Scottish seas...

+1 for Valletta, not so far on a plane, regular flights, excellent hotels and the most sun in Europe.
Just a warning that the beaches near Valletta are all rocky. Same for most of Dubrovnik and the one sandy beach will be rammed. San Sebastian for me.
+1 San Sebastian
+1 Nice- trains along the coast in either direction
+1 Syracuse, swimming from the platforms with the locals, trains along the coast again. Not Taormina which is a 1 trick expensive pony. Syracuse is just on the ok side of touristy still and trips on train to Modica/Noto were great.
+1 Lisbon, though the sea is/was/appeared to be freezing. Fabulous city though. Feels really young at the moment
Leftfield would be St Malo. Lovely walled town. Trip to the busy but still breathtaking Mont St Michel. Barely a city though and not as good as those above. Agree with the idea though- beach/city makes for a a really nice week away
Vigo/Pontevedra is a good shout.
Had a great time round there last year and even though Vigo is a busy port ,Samil beach is close by and the Cies islands were a short boat trip for some lovely beaches.
The local transport was very cheap and easy to use .
We also found eating out was good value if you avoided the cruise ship catchers.
Split - has better beaches than Dubrovnik, lots to do.
Weymouth.
Or Havana.
I'd like to go to Split, looks amazing and the beaches look great.
In reality if i had a spare week/long weekend i'd be back off to Sainte Maxime, i'd do one day up in the hills past Grasse, one day i'd get the ferry (lol, SPEEDBOAT) over to St Tropez and take a walk round the forts and graveyards.
It's barely a city, there's not loads to do but it's just really chilled, quiet and a bit nice. Only downside is it's a bit of a drive from Nice.
+1 for Lisbon. Or Blackpool.
another +1 for lisbon
San Francisco. You didn't say Europe. Might fail on the warm part as the fog rolls in at that time of year.
Syracuse in Sicily was lovely, but a week would feel a long time there unless you wanted to travel the island.
Copenhagen
If San Sebastián in July, go sooner rather than later. Beaches can be minging in peak season, or stay towards the east or west of the city as those beaches tend to be quieter. I live about 5 min from the central one and don't bother in summer.
Cadiz - a suprisingly lovely and compact city
Stockholm - 100s of islands around there
Jersey - you're never far from the sea
Montpellier - it's 30 yrs since I went but it was lovely and the sea was a bus ride away
Venice - if you stay outside and get the boat in there are some nice places within easy reach to stay at
Rijeka - supposed to be lovely
!’d like to go to Split, looks amazing and the beaches look great.
It is. 15 years ago had a fortnight kitesurfing/windsurfing up and down the coast.
Lisbon is great unless you try to get into the water. Cold, cold, cold.
Tarifa. And learn to kitesurf while you're there.
Just back from Malaga/Torre Del Mar/Nerja on Wednesday, can't recommend enough!
Malaga is beautiful with a nice long beach that stretches right around the bay to the east of the city, nice and cheap to eat and drink as well.
There's a service bus that runs along the coast that could take you to the coastal resorts of Torre Del Mar & Nerja, Malaga to Torre Del Mar is a 40 minute journey costing 2.70 euro one way.
Malaga must be served by every airport in the UK and we rented a small, very clean studio flat right in the center of the city for 60 euro a night.
At the minute the area is still very traditional Spanish but my father in law who lives there is starting to complain it's becoming 'more like Benidorm every day' 🙂
Nobody gonna mention Copenhagen? Nice beaches a 20 minute train ride from the city centre. Plus swimming in the harbour.
Not long back from Spain (Palma, Majoca) and I've not seen it this heaving this early in the season. Perhaps people are taking earlier holidays this year due to the long winter, but I flew out and back at 6am and airports both in blighty and spain were packed, I dread to think what it will be like in peak season if demand increases.
I'd be tempted by Bordeaux - not exactly on the beach, but near some very nice beaches.
Tarragona, watch out for pickpockets at busy times.
