Got to be in Reading for a conference (Hilton) at 1030 in next few days. Coming up Via Basingstoke on the a33.

Plan is to leave home early and find somewhere to pitstop for a decent breakfast reasonably close to Reading and early enough I don't get completely bogged in rush hour traffic on the A33 then finish off the journey after 930.

I really really can't be arsed with nose to bumper traffic so has anyone got any suggestions where I can stop or a better route?

The Gorge at Caversham Bridge is a usual stop for people. Not been for years. You should be able to avoid the traffic by 9:30 and although you need to pootle along the IDR is only 1 1/2 miles away from the Hilton. Alternatively, somewhere closer which do a reasonable breakfast is Morrisons just at the back of the Hilton, or running late, you have Maccys at B&Q on the left as you drive down the A33. Not sure how good a breakfast you want ?

Thanks for those. Anything from golden arches upwards in quality!

I've done nearly 700 miles in the last week so my main motivation is a journey that doesn't involve the M3/A33 at peak traffic time! So long as there is breakfast anything else is secondary 🙂

Hmm, I'm local and take my brekkies seriously so they're normally DIY at weekends only. So easy to get served crap.

I wouldn't agree on the Gorge, but not been for ages either. I did have a good cooked breakfast in Bill's restaurant in town next to John Lewis recently so that gets my shout if you want to go past your destination. Opens at 8.

Cafe Yolk kicks ass. Mildly pretentious & hipsterish, but quality. If actually in the center then The Shed is probly the one.

I was looking at places the OP could easily park and not have hassle in finding. I could have recommended places in the town centre if that was the case 😀

I think really the OP is looking at something just south of Reading. Or near the M4 as he is heading from the south.

If he can drive to the george / town he might as well just drive to the hilton and have breakfast there.

Realistically south Reading/Whitley is that great and no where really spring to mind.

I suppose the Morrisons on Rose Kiln Lane will be open.

What you really want ask is does any one know a place for breakfast in 3 mile Cross, Spencers Wood or Shinfield ? and Re title the thread.

If you're only going as far as the Hilton at Kennet Island then you won't really hit the worst of the traffic, well you might, but only a mile or so of it, and it'll be just as bad at 9:30 as it is at 8.

If anyone actually has a good suggestion for Breakfast south of the M4 I'd be interested, everywhere I've tried has been expensive yet disappointing.

Park your car at the park&ride at 3mile cross, cycle over the road to the village and get a pastry from the Londis (they get deliveries from a bakery, it's not all happy-shopper crap), then ride down the cycle path to the Hilton avoiding the traffic? It's only 20min ride into town, so you could always ride in, have breakfast in town, then ride back to the hotel.

What about Charlies cafe in Basingstoke? About 2 minutes off the ring road the right side of the m3, big breakfast for a fiver, with tea/coffee amd free WiFi...

Actually, whilst the Reading Massive are on - Green Park. What's it really like getting in of a morning? Looks like I'm headed that way for my office days, coming in from the west .. thinking M4 is the only option unless someone can convince me the A33 isn't an even bigger disaster at 09:00.

I'm thinking my days will be 10-6 or 8-4 but am I kidding myself it'll be any better then?

He's going from Basingstoke to Reading and you're suggesting somewhere between Basingstoke and Newbury? It's not exactly on the way.

Stratfield Saye looks reasonable location.

Brassneck, I have engineers permanently at Green Park and I used to work there for 4 years. The junction changes have helped and its a lottery as to if you get snarled up. Usually its rolling reasonably well.

This is at least partially true. But it is a fine breakfast and its not far off piste. Its ten mins up the road from the Stoke.
