True enough, amazing song and like so much of their stuff, steeped in living history - the girls both went to my old school and everyone locally is really proud of them.
I wouldn't say I was into folk music, I listen to a lot of stuff but definitely biased towards the rockier or funkier ends of the spectrum - yet The Unthanks have blown me away from the first moment I heard them on 6music. Finally saw them live last year and they were incredible. 'Magpie' is a particular favourite of mine.
This girl is an ignorant, filthy, ragged, and deplorable-looking object, and such an one as the uncivilized natives of the prairies would be shocked to look upon.
Different times eh? They've played in our village hall before which was ace - room for about 50 in the audience.
I'm off to play in a Brass Band in Beamish tomorrow 🙂
