Apparently the nudity had 'angered the spirits' thus causing the earthquake.

And yet the study of complex, dynamic systems suggest it is perfectly reasonable for the initial act of disrobing to climax in an earthquake. Perhaps there is wisdom in such ancient beliefs!

Ian if you've ever given an energy drink to an already high energy five year old, you will know that energy drinks truly are the work of satan.

It looks like my hometown is in the news.

Whether you consider there is such thing as spirit is irrelevant as the saying goes enter Rome and join the orgies eh ...

Mount Kinabalu is considered sacred by the Kadazan/Dusun tribe and the group was actually warned / told by the guide not to strip off or to show disrespect to the mountain area. I mean they were even urinating on the mountain which is a no no.

Consider themselves "lucky" they did not anger other tribal people who are not as docile by comparison and may cause them bodily harm.

I mean if they want to go naked please go to Magaluf or even the toon, we like to see naked people in the toon here yes we do, where it is the norm for tourists or go to some exotic islands with orgies but definitely not in North Borneo.

Oh well ... next time they might want to try Saudi Arabia to see what will happen.

Please respect the mountain and try not to treat it like a rubbish dumping ground like Himalaya Mountain. Have you seen the amount of rubbish there! 😯

This has little to do with religion. We have laws in this country against public nudity too.

I've been to the top of Kinablu and to Angkor Wat and at no time felt it necessary to get naked ! This is just a ridiculous internet fad, like planking but less amusing and more likely to have you end up in jail.

They should send these tourists to jail for a month, give them a big fine and then deport them. This plus massive publicity to ensure other tourists are not encouraged to do the same. Their guide asked them not to, they igniored him and then tried to check out of the hotel immediately (no showers etc) and make a run for it as they knew they had caused offense.

You can get naked anywhere you want in the UK either as that ex army guy knows, hes spent most of the last 8 years in jail.

I don't get it why go naked? Is that a new trend in the look at me, look at me I am shy culture? 🙄

Edit: those pics of naked backsides ... why? What a disappointment? FFS show your front? Are your bush not trimmed or something is not really proportionate in size? Loose muscles? 😆

i'm surprised there aren't more floodings, landslides and lightening strikes here in Germany.... i went for a walk last week and stripped off at the top and enjoyed some full-bodied rays of sunshine. i'll leave the rest to your imagination...[img]DSC_0970 by sod_the_taxman, on Flickr[/img]

I agree.

It wasn't the laws against nudity I was thinking were a bit ridiculous. Rather it was the idea that nudity had 'angered the spirits' and thus caused the earthquake.

As for laws against nudity, I was reading a story last week about a nude cycle ride and how one individual had apparently got a little too 'excited' and was arrested for public indecency. But the report said there was no specific law againt nudity if it wasn't causing any distress (where here it was the 'excited' nature of the group's 'member' that was causing the offence).

I climbed that mountain in 1989, near the top is a refuge we stayed in. It has a toilet.

Just where do they think it flushes to when you use it. There is no sewage pipe all the way down the hill !

The question is what does a bear poo looks like?

As a kid I picked up goat shite as I thought I found new organic marbles to play with ... they did not really smell that much as I broke them in half then give a sniff ... 😆 Then bingo! Something alerted me that they came from the backside of goats when I saw the goats producing those "marbles" in front of me ...

Best result would seem to be a short spell in jail, big fine and deport them.

just out of interest why is being white and having dreadlocks an issue? Dreads have been part of european and world culture for 1000's of years via the various tribal and spiritualist movements/beliefs. Dreads were most commonly associated with holy men, whether druid, shaman, hindu Yogis, eastern Gyanis, and Tapasvis as it linked the belief that, mental and spiritual energies mainly exit the body through the top of the head and the hair. If the hair is knotted, they believed, the energy remained within the hair and the body, keeping a person more strong and healthy.

dreads and plats were also worn by celtic and germanic tribes (there are various roman texts taking the piss out of them)

Rasta and the dread link didnt happen until the 1930's so why the white dread hate? is it purely racial? or are all white dreaddies just stinky crusties and dropouts?

(though gap year dreads as an alternative to having a personality is pretty funny but haven't we all done things that look stupid in hindsight?)

Yes, the gays seem to get under the skins of the christians quite effectively. I found this article by mistake (whilst hunting for a review of the Transition Scout!). Sad that there was a need to write it, sadder that there was a rule at all, saddest are the comments at the bottom.

That would be a completely fair valid point if we were talking about them weeding against a tree, but we aren't, so you are just wasting air and owe everyone who read your post 15 seconds (5 seconds to read, and 10 thinking wtf is he on about).

Or are we at the point of pointless comparisons of what you can and can't do and then trying to tie them into comments?.

A better comparison would be to pick a place that has cultural and historic importance to our culture and duplicate the circumstances, so would you have any issues with a group of cool travellers doing the whole wacky nude photo things and pissing everywhere (as you seem to think the pissing is important) at say Auschwitz, or would you feel that was disrespectful and should be discouraged?

so may, but for others, it's more linked with "my physical appearance and vanity is a distraction, I will leave it to naturally sort itself out, whilst I focus on the more important things in life" the other option is to shave it all off, but then you accused of being a white skin head nazi

just out of interest really, I'm as bald as kojak and could give a monkeys either way, but I find it interesting to see where peoples prejudices come from. Even PC right on STW types can be exceedingly judgmental 😀

It is a bit sweary, but this pretty much covers it:

Will McKenzie: Playing the guitar badly, wearing beads, talking about 'one love' and pretending you are friends with Central American villagers - who, by the way, despise you - before heading back to your parents five-bedroomed house in Surrey, doesn't make you a spiritual person, it makes you a bell-end.

Ben: I think you're right about his song, Katie

Will McKenzie: Oh, **** off, Ben! You don't believe in 'song lines' any more than I do. It's just a way for you to seem interesting to girls because deep down you know you're boring and pretentious like your stupid ****ing dreadlocks. Which, by the way, always look embarrassing on white people. They're not countercultural, they actually scream 'Oh, I've got a trust fund!' so get a normal haircut, you unbearable prick.

Chewkw and SOD earlier - spot on. Plus more culture than religion.

I have no issue with nudity itself and love a nice "natural" swim in a river. But respect for other cultures comes first. Crass thing to do and even crasser to publish. Brits abroad......?

Everest and Kinabalu are both sacred to their cultures and yet we show little or no respect. And yet we get agitated when a Gurkha squats and drops in Aldershot?!?

I read the article etc and thought 'hope they do the jail time'.

Why did they do it? Arrogance and petulance no doubt. Malaysia is quite a diverse country, I'd love to visit their and try the many different cuisines.

Was it a holy, revered or sacred site for locals? You might have missed a point.

I do liketh the pic that Convert posted above. It has a fantastic stratum.

Whatever your personal opinion on religion or religions be respectful. Just because you don't believe in something doesn't mean its wrong and you are right.

You know, the meaning can be ironic and goes both ways:

[i]bigot
?b???t/

Perfectly OK to find a primitive superstition to be risible, and mock it.

Got off lightly. A fine a 3 days prison backdated to when they were banged up. So, free to go.

£860 😯

Blimey, that's a hell of a lot of money for something so trivial. As is any more jail time than they've already had- they have, after all, been in prison for a few days already. I think they'd already learnt whatever lesson they were supposed to learn.

Could have been 3 months, sounds like because the prosecution couldn't prove they swore at and abused the guide they got let off lightly. Fine seems reasonable to me as well, if someone had done something so stupid in Europe in a place of national significance then most people wouldn't think this was unreasonable.

Might **** up further travels as well, as some countries are sensitive about letting people in who have spent time in jail (Australia? USA?)

They've been freed. They already spent the sentence on remand.

Yeah, it's not like we don't send people to prison for 16 months for swinging off the cenotaph. The cenotaph essentially being a superstitious monument.

You think almost a thousand pounds is a reasonable fine for being naked on a hilltop? Honestly?

Maybe £86 if it's really a problem.

Trivial to you. Why can't you respect others cultures or beliefs?

If this sort of thing catches on I fear the people of North Wales might have a case against me.

You can hardly accuse all of religion, some 5-6b people, of being as ridiculous as some people in Malaysia because of this 🙄
