Bugging me after seeing a (terrible) band last night that reminded me of this lot -
From 10-15 years ago, might've been more recent - Irish, had a "hit" single and album, never much more heard of them after that.
I can hear the vocals in me head which were a bit "Mike Scott"ish although a little more twee.
I'm pretty sure they were The (Something)
Like The Coral, The Cribs (did it being with C?)

'elp!

Ah-ha! Rogermoore is the man!
Yep, The Thrills - if ever there was a more inappropriately named band!!

Thanks!

What was that single - it was ok, wasn't it? Live they were dismal though, as were The Growlers last night. Weak and passionless.
Fat White Family were the polar opposite though. 🙂

The Growlers
Jesus.

Edit: Ah. They're American. Kind of explains it.

Jesus.

2nd most inappropriately named band ever!
They're American btw, so I don't think it was a Bo! Selecta reference.

First few singles and album were promising. More Byrds for me than Mike Scott - saw them live at Hammersmith Apollo - they were very poor. Went rapidly downhill after that.

EDIT: Big Sur wasn't it?

They had 2 Albums, second one kind of died a damp squib of a death. They had 4 singles off the first Album, So Much for the City. Santa Cruz (you're not that far) was probably the most memorable as it was released twice.
I saw them in Sheffield and remember it being OK, although the ensuing booze fuelled journey to Lanzarote straight from the gig may have clouded this!!

Glad you agree! Santa Cruz (thanks again RM) was quite promising, great hook, but the guy's voice really grated live, it was so samey and weak. Still, quite memorable for all that!

The Growlers

Band FAQ:

Q) Is the band named after pies, vaginas, or the act of taking a really noisy crap?
A) We hate you
