Had a couple of texts and calls from people claiming I've called them but I haven't. Funnily enough they all have the same 07XXX five digit code as me. There are no out going calls or texts on my phone. Checked my usage on my online bill and nothing strange there either. As it's only been a few people is there anything to worry about?
For reference, it's an iPhone 12 that is never very far from me. Fully updated, no dodgy apps on there. When I checked on line, there was mention of either needing to get access to the SIM to get the IMEI number or possibly through a scanner. Anyone any similar experience?
I think it's a build up to a scam. They spoof the calling number so that it's similar to yours. The scammers aren't UK based and don't know that 07xxx are mobiles, so they pick a number close to yours in the hope you'll think it's somebody local and ring back.
Yesterday I got two calls where the caller id had the first 5 numbers the same as my mobile. I answered the first call and got a foreign accented guy saying I owed income tax. I blocked him at that point. The 2nd call was a different number but again first 5 digits the same.
