We do.

However we don't do them aswell as the Canadians or the Irish who pretty much take the crown each year with the occasional Schotts or StrathyPoPo Victory.

Agreed:

All I wanted to do growing up was learn to play the bagpipes - but my norf-London comprehensive wouldn't let me.

And now there's Peat and Diesel:

For the last few years two of ours have attended the joint services band camp at Barry Budden.

One year I took my aunt and uncle to watch them all march and play down St Andrews high Street.

The band came around the bottom corner at least 200m away to just the beat of a snare drum... Then 130 teenagers on brass, woodwind and some pipes struck up Scotland the Brave - the noise was incredible.

Hairs on the back of your neck moment.

There were a couple of pipe bands that day too - but 'our' band blew them away... particularly after throwing in Pharrell Williams 'Happy' between trad tunes 😎

Childhood fact according to my dad.
On still day a bagpipe played on the South downs could be heard in London.
I still believe it!

My 9yo daughter has always called them “Gaspipes”. I think the names stuck now!

*dons flameproof suit*

Bagpipes are the worst sound in the entire world. I'm sure I should be deported south of the border because of this view, but the slightest peep from them fills me with rage.

Why are bagpipers always walking?

To get away from the noise..

I am partial to some Bag pipes added to songs.

korn - shoots and ladders?

Bagpipes sound great however learning them in an RAF pipe hut is a bit of an assault on the senses. Best outdoors.

Gaspipes on there own are awful but when you hear them with the full band they’re quite special.

I was in San Diego many years ago, and was cycling out to the coast when I came across a man playing his bagpipes beside his parked car in a layby on a busy road. I always imagined his wife wouldn't let him practise near the house. 😆

Its not so much the sound I dislike as the music chosen.

Now a redhead with bagpipes - what's not to love?

@Rona we once had a musical saw for sale in the classifieds of our paper with the tagline "wife won't let me play it".

I was at a village fete a hew years ago when the local pipe band marched up to do their bit. Young lad (though not tiny) next to me was quite excited to see them, but as soon as the pipes started he was in floods of tears. Pure terror. I believe that's the impact they were meant to have on the enemy.

I love pipes. Highland, Border, Northumbrian, English and all manner of European ones.

Uillean pipes have a nicer tone but I'm partial to a good bit of Highland piping too. Quite a few modern folk/folk rock bands have successfully integrated them. Wolfstone, Skipinnish etc.

Uillean pipes

Ah yes, forgot those. But my God they are complicated things.

I like the pipes and drums at the local games in the summer, but don't think I'd specifically go seek it out on Spotify. Johnathan Davis and similar may be one of the exceptions to that 😉

Malcolm Jones played electric pipes on a few tracks but it was never a mainstay of the bands sound.

During my professional life I worked with this German guy. Automotive engineer by day and personal piper to the chieftain of Clan MacKenzie when not testing engines. He also has a deep appreciation of Scotch Whisky and Harley Davidson motorcycles. I give you Peter Kunz playing his dudelsack
