Can anyone suggest some free software where I can take 5 or 6 photos, crop them and merge them all onto the same image and add a bit of text?
I could do in PowerPoint but I want the output to be a jpeg not ppt.
If you just mean normal images then www.gimp.org would do, if you mean stitching panoramic photos together then hugin.sourceforge.net.
Can you export a slide as a jpg from PowerPoint?

Just normal images. I tried gimp but got a bit frustrated as the second image was pasting into the text box I’d created and I couldn’t figure out how to stop it. I know it’s pretty powerful but looking for something a bit simpler as I need to do it tonight.

Looked at that too, but I seem to be stuck with the PowerPoint slide size, which isn’t quite right, plus export was fairly low res
You could actually do it with MS Paint easily enough. Just start a blank image, make it huge, zoom out & paste each photo in & move it around & crop as required. Then stick the text in. 🙂

Tried paint and paint 3D problem with them is you can’t lock the aspect ratio of the pasted image so when you resize you screw it up.
Google Photos will often do this automatically.
Or MS ICE
Not looking to stitch together like a pano, will be 6 separate images
I was going to suggest Gimp but seems you've already tried that. How about something like https://www.lucidpress.com/pages/tour/free-microsoft-publisher-alternative ? I've never used it but seems what you're trying to do is more along the lines of a publishing app than a paint/image manipulation app
Thanks, just been playing around with paint.net, I think that does what I want
17 seconds ahead of me, that's what I was going to suggest. I've used it for years.
You can't use word or powerpoint. Lay it out and use the snipping tool? You'll never get great resolution but it'd do the job
^^^^ was going to post same as jamiemcf
But late now, but MS Paint will do this... To keep the aspect ratio you just use the resize command rather than manually dragging the selection to change the size.
There are also apps that will do this on your phone, I use one called Collage Maker. Used to use Layout but this does more and allows text.
I use PowerPoint for this sort of thing all the time - the editing tools are actually pretty comprehensive!
1. Add and arrange your pictures, text, whatever else.
2. Select everything you want to be included in your final image.
3. Right-click and choose to group the selected items.
4. Right-click again and select save as image. You can choose what file format you want to save as (jpg, bmp, png, etc).
That's it.
Step 3 might not be required.
I regularly use PowerPoint for all sorts of basic graphic editing tasks. It's got some useable built-in formatting options, enough control to keep things aligned and accurate, enough editing options to do useful things like adding transparency, and all without the overhead of owning and learning a 'proper' bit of software.
The problem with PowerPoint is you can’t change the size of the sheet and are stuck with a landscape aspect, ideally want more of a portrait config.
PowerPoint as per nobbingsford. Don’t try and export the whole slide.
Arrange the images.
Select all the images.
Right click. Group.
Right click. Save as picture.
Another vote for paint.net
Just tried PowerPoint, works well, but does anyone know how to increase the resolution of the exported jpeg?

You can - if you save the object (right click) as a picture rather than export slide it is whatever size the object is (with a group make sure you only select the group not an object within the group). You can of course also change the page layout / size of a powerpoint slide to be portrait too!
I'm not sure what the resolution export is - there is an official way of doing it for whole slides but its horrible: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office/troubleshoot/powerpoint/change-export-slide-resolution
My preference for what you are doing would be to make a custom page that is much bigger (if its exporting at 96 dpi and you want 300 dpi make it 3.125 x bigger in both directions)...
This is more flexible than "paint" type suggestions as when you realise there is a typo in your caption or want to swap an image you can go back to the editable PPT.
You may want to experiment with saving as PNG and then converting to JPEG where you'll have control over the compression factor. Jpeg can make stuff look awful with the wrong settings.
Try photoscape x - I used it to create some collages for a present. Not sure about adding the text though.

I'm struggling offhand to think of a compelling reason to save as JPEG rather than PNG these days other than habit. PNG is far superior and supported by just about everything these days.
Picasa has a collage option.
Xara will complete your task as well.
Message me and I'll put something together for you 🙂

PS: Comic Sans TTF is an additional extra 😉
Thanks Guys - ended up using PowerPoint, was really easy, made the sheet bigger to improve the resolution and you can even adjust the brightness/contrast of the pics after you have added them. The crop is great as it still maintains the original image so you can crop it bigger if needed.
👍🏻
