I'm starting to get aches and pains from working on a tiny desk in the corner of our spare room. Some re-organising is needed, and to make space, swapping the spare bed for a sofa bed seems most sensible. But, I don't some shonky, uncomfortable sofa bed - needs to be worthy of sleeping in for visiting guests. Any recommendations?

We tried a few over the years for the reasons you mentioned and ended up with a futon. We just couldn't find one that was comfy as both a sofa and a bed. This was 10 years ago so things may have changed.

Ikea Hemnes daybed has been comfy enough for me to sleep on quite a few times. Pulls out to a double, plenty of storage underneath.

Worth spending the extra on the sprung mattresses though over the cheapo foam option.

Yet to find a sofa bed that isn't terrible. Our last one was higher in the middle so it felt really uncomfortable. We're eyeing up the Hemnes above for the spare room too, although I've also been told that it's worth getting a proper mattress for it as the foam one is too thin.

I have bad memories of sleeping on a futo which wasn't comfy at all! That was 20 years ago, maybe things have moved on...

Where as I have always found futons comfy... Beds are very personal. I don't like soft bed or sagging bed. Also not keen on mattress topers. I just like an orthopaedic / firm basic mattress, others love toppers and soft beds

Sofa bed advice the day after valentine's?

What did you do or not do?!

Would a murphy bed be a good option. Having a sofa in the spare room sounds a bit pointless and they're still large items atleast with a murphy its an ifgice until its a bedroom.

We had an Ikea LYCKSELE MURBO for quite a few years. Didn't really get used as a sofa, more of a bed in the spare room that didn't take up too much space.

Now passed onto the FIL and we use it when visiting him, I still find it comfy and it must be getting on for 10 years old. I weigh about 14 1/2 stone and am 6' 5" if that helps any. I also prefer a firm mattress.

Watching with interest. I want to get a sofa bed that functions well as both

We've have one of these as our main sofa and extra guest bed.

It always gets commented on favourably by guests who've sleep on it and I'm perfectly happy to sleep on it, but then again I sleep on a futon mattress on my bed too. Very solid, even after being dismantled a couple of times for moves.

We've had a couple of those IKEA Lycksele Murbo ones, and they're comfy to sleep on; certainly better than other sofa beds I've tried. Sofa-wise they're fine.

Got a Futon Company thing which seems comfortable as sofa or bed.

Had an IKEA Hemnes, it didn't cope well with the wonky flooring of an old house and was a horrible sofa to sit on.

We’ve got a Muji T2 which we’ve had for probably 18 years now and it’s still going strong. In fact my daughter now uses as her main bed. I’ve slept on it at times over the years and have slept really well on it. It’s very stable and firm and has fully slatted base. Doesn’t look like it’s made any more but it’s this one as recently sold on eBay here:

I’d certainly look at something with that sort of design if possible.

Probably overkill for your needs but we have a Danish sofa in the sitting room that makes into a great bed. It does both duties well and flat packs so it is easy to get up stairs or in our case through tiny old doorways.

This is a John Lewis link, they don't do it anymore but the range is still available in the UK and they come in different shapes and sizes.

There was a time when I was thinking that I might need to sleep on a sofa bed every night so I typed "sofa bed to sleep on every night" into Google 🙂
Was thinking about one of these:

Didn't buy one in the end so can't comment on how good or bad they are. Seems a lot to spend on a spare room for guests too but might be a worthwhile investment.
