Son has a 1989 Mini. He's been borrowing my tools but wants to start building his own set up.
He wants to buy a socket set but probably won't need the metric sockets that come in most Halfords and other people's socket sets, I think?
So, what 3/8" drive socket set for AF sockets? One that includes some 1/4" and 1/2" drive is probably ok for the bigger/smaller stuff.
'89 mini not metric?
He'll need the metric ones at some point in the future so go for the Halfords pro sets that are always on offer.

not so far!
9/16 and 1/2 inch sockets should take 98% of a mini apart, from memory.
One that is small enough to fit in the boot 🙂
I went a long way with a basic Halfords one, that and a decent set of spanners.
See if Sykes Pickavant are still selling their wall-drive sockets as these will do both metric and imperial bolts, using a nominally metric socket set.
As above - Halfords Pro - always on offer - buy whichever set suits your budget.
They are decent tools - I've given them some real hard use over the years any not broken anything.

FWIW, Land Rover were still using Whitworth into the early eighties.
Also, another vote for the Halfords Pro stuff. Should pretty much last forever for DIY work.

LandRover were still using imperial in the mid 90's.. the propshaft bolts on my '95 300Tdi Defender were imperial.
Might be worth a wanted ad on here? Probably quite a few people will have imperial tools that came in a socket set that they'll never use. I gave all mine away already though...
He'll need the metric ones for when he puts a vtec in it
Socket set for a classic Mini - fair swap.

the cases aren't up to much IME, but the tools are great
As Jeff says, you don't need much for a Mini, but you might need 2 spanners in the same size or 2 sockets, or a ring spanner and an open spanner, etc. A small ratchet handle and a selection of extensions might help with the tight spaces too.
'89 Mini - Lifetime supply of WD40? 😉
1989 isn't really classic is it?
You will need extension bars, universal joints thingies (useful for manifold bolts), contortionists hands, patience, a decent ratchet, a smaller ratchet that you don't think you ever will use, but you will and a lot of plasters!
I bought this Bahco 138 piece set and its been extremely good, a really good base to build on.
Photo of said mini would be appreciated for our nostalgia 😆
