I know nothing about IT, but appears a bit odd that someone can pull the power cord out from one computer and it takes down so many platforms?

Eggs in one basket springs to mind ?

If it's a DNS problem then it's not "one computer"

My wife was complaining her phone was broken.

Turns out Facebook / Insta are down.

I thought there would be more of an outcry but there's been nothing on social media.

It's the end, my vodafone broadband is gone too (and I'm in Ireland). Also get my TV from Vodafone so no TV either. Might just have to read a book (assuming my Kindle is working).

Better be back for the zwift race tomorrow or I won't be able to get any exercise 🙂

It's the only SM I use or care about too.

Conversation with my 13 yo daughter:

WhatsApp won’t load. Which is bad bc I need it.

me: it’s down. So is insta and fb. Read the news.

Christ on a bike. I thought my phone was broken. That’s so weird.

me: tech breaks. Welcome to reality

So yours isn’t working either?

me: no one in the whole world’s is working

Which makes me think that come the apocalypse us over 40s are going to be the only ones that can remember how to actually do anything.

Plenty of non social stuff uses Whatsapp. British Gas uses it as their support chat for their PAYG customers. In most of South America, it’s the default text platform.

This is serious. My bedtime routine is usually reading whether anyone's bins have been missed, asking if virgin broadband is down or posts trying to reunite a bank card with their rightful owner.

Guess I'll have to make some calls instead.

Facebook HQ:

On the other hand, my wife got to Morrisons just after the petrol tanker arrived - it was deserted, probably because this hadn't been broadcast on the local Facebook group.

Apparently whatever they broke took out the ability for their techs to remotely connect and fix it (I’ve been there myself not so long ago - it’s not a good day at the office!) with the added bonus that the staff also could t access their offices as their spades all use the network to check this ID!

Based on my lad's experience of starting uni at the weekend, I suspect that the overload of new WhatsApp groups for accommodation, subject, uni, college and a million official and unofficial societies just caused it to explode

WhatApp being down was a bit of a pain but a world without FB and Insta is no bad thing.

Yeah.... they should have left it broken.

November 17th, 2178 - "On October 4th, 2021, increased productivity, vaccination rates, global economy indicators, and overall worldwide happiness indicators showed a sharp upwards spike for several hours. IQ scores globally doubled in all tests, while aggression levels subsided across the board. To scholars in the 22nd century, unfortunately, the cause of this has been lost to time."

My main observation was that JnrV was barely impacted, her and her mates live on Snapchat and barely touch Facebook products. It'll be interesting to see if FB are able to lure in her generation.

Didn't impact at all. I'm part of several What's App groups (one for our street is particularly inane) that went blissfully quiet don't use FB at all, and I didn't scroll aimlessly through Insta while making a cup of tea...

Mleh.

Reminds me of the aftermath from the London Tube bombing. Loads of blokes in suits having to walk like five minutes to work and being utterly bamboozled.

Making ignorant assumptions about just how capable younger people actually are, is why you'd end up as their food....
