Mrs Binners has just got back home and informed me she’s got money on Newcastle. The takeaway is on her tonight then

She got 8/1 this morning.

I went with Robbie Savage’s mums prediction of 2 nil to United 🙁

This is more like it - Utd need to win this - it’ll give Joan a bit more time - which everybody wants. A loss tonight might mean he’d go.

No cheering here should have taken the chances in the first half and been 4 up by half time

I don't think he is much safer this evening, 70mins of looking shocking, defence is still rubbish, unless they have a replacement lined up they can't risk going without a manager for now. International break is the time to do this

The United hierarchy need to give him an extended 3 year contract on the back of this result.....hopefully......

Well after going through that all over again on MOTD last night I'm genuinely looking forward to being entertained this afternoon here!

What a refreshing way to talk about football from Klopp

https://www.thisisanfield.com/2018/10/jurgen-klopps-words-on-entertaining-football-are-a-stark-contrast-to-jose-mourinhos/

Also happy we have played City/United/Chelsea/Spurs and Aresnal OK we got not points but we kept the scores sensible in all of those games, we don't play any of the established big sides until we go to Anfield on Boxing Day

How to win friends and influence people: If you’re going to push people off and insist that it’s you who’s taking the penalty, probably best not to then spoon it into Row Z.

I wouldn’t fancy being him in that dressing room at the moment

Yeah, best 0-0 I've watched in a while, great game for the neutral and in the end a fair result.

Though Chelsea and Arsenal are sneaking up there

It was a great match. Good reffing too. He’s obviously decided that everyone is giving as good as they get, no-ones complaining, so let them get on with it.

’The Battle of Stamford Bridge’ being the ultimate example of that, which my football-mad daughter still says is the best match she’s ever watched 😂

Absolutely terrible news from Leicester yesterday. Truly tragic! In an age of owners who treat clubs as purely money-making tools, he seemed like one of the good guys who loved both the Club and the City. And just look what they acheived?!

Yes. Very rubbish.

Btw,the Pepe interview on r5 is worth a listen. Sounds like a lovely chap even if his taste in non Spanish music is suspect.

& even binners must have sympathy with the Thai/cave football team having to endure a meeting with Jose. After all they’ve been through. 🙂

Shocking news from Leicester, truly tragic.

As for this afternoon I hope the kids all know how many titles Jose has won, just in case he asks again.

Maybe the lads could play the first half as the current 1st 11 don't seem to make an appearance till after half time.

Senor J - I listened to the Pep interview. Seems like a top bloke.

How many titles has Jose won? Has he mentioned it at all recently? He's certainly not running the risk of adding to the tally, thats for bloody sure. I'm looking forward to another bout of shouting at the telly this afternoon

What luxury to be able to start with these 3 on the bench

Alexis Sánchez"

Romelu Lukaku

Jesse Lingard

2 of those don’t even warrant being on the bench.

At least we seem to have taken the handbrake off though.

Its a good job that rebound fell kindly for Pogba after his fannying around! Just stop all that crap, take a proper run up and put your ****ing laces through it!

True binners they should be on a pitch playing for somebody who wants them..

I reckon Everton would have liked to have Lukaku finishing for them!

Pogba is a moron, i do hope Jose drops him next week. Great interview afterwards where the interviewer asked Pogba about every incident he ****ed up on. Basically saying “why the sh1t run up” and “who were you showing off to when you lost the ball for there goal”. You could see Pogba was not entirely happy about with it, serves him right i say. United played better but it was still far from convincing. Yet again Rashford was rubbish when played centrally, he is not a front man yet.

He’s a bloody liability! I lost count of the passes he played to absolutely no-one. Just shanked it into god only knows where.

And the stupid run ups, flicks and back heels? Fine if you’re 5 nil up. Or if it actually works

He’s a bloody clown! Who appears to be listening to his agent, to the exclusion of everyone else.

And Lukaku, when he came on, looked like he’d spent the afternoon in the pub then called for a kebab on the way to the ground. He basically just stood around in midfield, watching what was happening around him, which wasn’t much.

Christ knows what’s going on behind the scenes at Old Trafford. Nothing good.

A manager who slags off his players publicly, has alienated the dressing room, lost the fans and doesn't play to any of his players strengths?

But with him there was an end result

and you could never ever accuse him of coasting through games like these lot. He always gave 100%

I remember the away fans singing ‘you’ve bought the wrong Ronaldo!’ In his first season.

That didn’t last long.

youre right though Mike. Watching Jose’s third season implosion is just torturous. We all know how it ends

And in the meantime watching displays of timid, half-arsed mediocrity from the likes of Pogba, Lukaku and Sánchez is getting bloody frustrating, to say the least.

They’re not fit to be mentioned in the same breath as the United Squads Ronnie played in

while I think Mourinho's troubles are well documented, what United are really missing is someone like Roy Keane or Jaap Stam, who just wouldn't let players get away with what they are getting away with now. One look from Roy and Pogba would think twice about trying that run up/silly flick again.

Still love this clip though...... pushes him over nothing, gets a ball thrown at him leading to Keane getting a red card, then Keane heads for him with malice aforethought and still he stands and justs gives him a withering stare...... Shearer was no nonsense when it came to the dark arts wasn't he.

We were saying exactly that last night.

in the Class of 92 Phil Neville tells a story about Keane. Neville had been practicing doing stepovers in training and decided to try it in a game. So he puts a couple in when running at someone and the crowd all cheer it. So he decides to do it again. He does, and the crowd all go mad again.

Then he looks over at Keane who has ‘that look’ on his face and shouts “OI!!! STOP *ING ABOUT!!!!”

He didn’t do it again.

Thats what Pogba needs. Someone to tell him to stop *ing about

Sums up man u fans there perfectly, you want entertaining dull football and would just be content to win and nothing more.

You can have a team with that talent who coulfd win handsomely and entertain while they did it

Our best player has been Tony Marshall. You don’t see him doing stupid little flicks that don’t come off, or silly penalty run-ups, just 3 absolutely top quality finishes in the last 2 games.

Hes a class act, and the fans bloody love him!

I have no idea what 'dull entertaining football' is, but show me a fan that doesn't just want his team to win, I'll show you a bullshitter. All this nonsense about the likes of Spurs and Arsenal and their need to play expansive, entertaining football, it's horse shit, All their fans would swap that shit for trophies.

There's positive, attacking, exciting play and there's pissing about doing tricks and giving the ball away in dangerous areas when a game's not won yet.

Not a stepover in sight.....

My sister used to be friends with one of Reading's players, and we saw highlights of this game in the player's bar after their game. The players were transfixed, Forest were the second or third best team in the country at the time and were dismantled. One of the Reading players said that they hoped they never drew them in the cup because they'd get done by double figures.

Ugly, nervy, committed, lucky and 3 points

They looked so much better when they were in the lead until it got nervous, come on out of the bottom 3

Well this is all very disappointing. The one thing this fixture always delivers is absolute comedy defending on a level similar to watching Laurel and Hardy trying to get a piano up a flight of stairs .

I’ve just complimented some fantastic Arsenal defensive challenges and I don’t think I’ve done that since Tony Adams and Martin Keown we’re playing

Cracking match! God only knows how it’s still nil nil

I reckon this might be settled by a goalkeeping howler

Big Virgil has fairly stiffened Liverpool's defence up! I think they have the meanest defence from the day he signed, although maybe Klopp is less gung-ho generally this season?

As a United fan I have to say that I was much fonder of the standard Liverpoool headless chicken approach to defending. It’s amazing how much difference the right player can make. He’s not just a brilliant defender, he’s a proper leader who organises everyone around him and makes them better players. And does what Vidic used to do for us. Bang them in for fun from corners and free kicks up the other end of the pitch

Milner had a blinder again today. One of the most consistently underrated players in the premiership for years. People go on about the front line at Liverpool, but he must surely be the first name on the team sheet every week?

Yep Milner and Henderson have been the 2 unsung for Liverpool really, great players there.

But watching MOTD, quick first point how did Leciester get away with that away strip against a team in blue?

After that though for all the shit football fans get the coming together there was impeccable, it's been a shit shit week there and I'm glad they won, and the fans of both sides were so respectful. Brought a tear to my eye

Somehow disappointed that city only scored 3, what a time to be alive!

Shall we just keep copying & pasting this comment for the rest of the season?

Maybe.

I'm not getting what all the fuss is about over Sterling's showboating ..I hope he told Mata to go forth and multiply ..even his manager is having a bit of a go..

I found it entertaining..as I'm sure all of the City supporters did too ..and after all is it not why we watch the game ..to be entertained ?

In other (toon related ) news ..good to see us finally getting a couple of wins ..and I doubt I will see a better headed goal than Rondons anywhere this season ..still papering over the cracks though!

I hope Mata keeps it consistent when Pogba is back from injury.

If you can't have a little showboating in front of your fans when you're on top in the Manchester derby, when can you?

just seen highlights.... looked a great performance, could have been 3 up at halftime.

Bit annoyed at the pundits claiming the Lingard goal came from a Gomez foul throw though because his foot was 'over the line' Read the laws fellas, before spouting crap

 • stand facing the field of play

 • have part of each foot on the touchline or on the ground outside the touchline

 • throw the ball with both hands from behind and over the head from the point where it left the field of play

Nothing about not being on the field of play......you can stand with both feet practically on the pitch, as long as your heels are slightly on the touchline and it's a fair throw.

Um, no.

Part of each foot in the touchline or in the ground outside the touchline means exactly that. It does not mean part of each foot on the ground inside the touchline. Or to put it another way, you must have part of each foot on the ground. That piece of ground must be on or outside the touchline.

It was 100% a foul throw. It isn't enough to read tge laws of the game you also need to know how to interpret them.

Nope.

I am a qualified ref, albeit haven't done it for a few years, and I keep up to date with the laws.

It isn’t enough to read tge laws of the game you also need to know how to interpret them.

I agree, yet you interpret them as saying 'your foot must be on or behind the line' which the laws specifically do not say, and if they wanted to say that they would. What they specifically say is that you have to have part of each foot on or behind the line, which he did. Therefore, fair throw.

But for avoidance of doubt; this bloke agrees with me.

https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/11558032/ref-watch-was-joe-gomez-throw-in-legal-in-englands-win-over-croatia

as does the Reffing equivalent of STW (not sure if that's validation)

https://www.refchat.co.uk/threads/gomez-throw-lee-dixon-%F0%9F%A4%A6%F0%9F%8F%BC%E2%80%8D%E2%99%82%EF%B8%8F.12668/#post-134215

It's detail and possibly minor, but it annoys me these guys get paid to discuss the game and yet don't make the effort to know the laws. Although in fairness now it's been pointed out Lee Dixon has admitted he's wrong.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh
Both feet must be touching the ground on or behind the line for the throw in to be legal. A foot clearly over the line on the field of play is an incorrectly taken throw in and the throw in is then taken by the opponents. Also the player must have both feet on the ground either on or behind the line at the moment of release. If the player's momentum take him forward after releasing the ball that is not a breach of the Law. One of the most common mistakes at underage is running / walking while taking the throw in and clearly at release one foot has to be in air which is not allowed.

But for avoidance of doubt; this bloke agrees with me.

Dermot Gallagher answers a different question. He bases his decision on the fact that, in his opinion, Gomez's foot was not touching the ground inside the touch line. The fact is debatable, the law is clear. The shot I saw I thought part of his foot was over the line.

If you had ever seen the way the IFAB works, you'd know why they are written the way they are and why they need interpretation. Get a bunch of half addled octogenarians, feed them a massive lunch with wine, then get them to discuss the rules.

This law hasn't changed in any set of laws I've ever seen. If you want to start a fight like the Facebook puzzle thread with a bunch of referees, ask them why the lines are part of the area of the field that they define, but on a throw in you are allowed to stand on the line that defines the field but you are not on the field then duck and run.

Sorry, but he's wrong as well.

Gallagher isn't answering a different question at all, it's clear that his foot has broken the line but as long as he has (and I quote again) "part of each foot on the touchline or on the ground outside the touchline" he hasn't entered the FoP.

What do you make of Law 17 then? What constitutes 'in' in that respect (cos it's directly analogous to the throw in)

On your second point - yes - it's an anomaly but still doesn't make it wrong. And it's not even really interpretation..... it's a matter of fact. Has he met all the conditions in the law (as opposed to breaking your interpretation of a bit that isn't in the law about not having anything over the line)

cf also cricket. The crease line has a distinct width so they clearly define which edge applies - when bowling the front, so standing 99% over the line but with part of your foot on* the line is OK. Yet when batting for run outs and stumped the BACK of the line applies.

* actually can even be off the ground but the 'line' is a plane for the purposes of the law.

Big day in the league today I think, bottom half is staying tight there and Spurs looking like they are in a good place for moving into 3rd, though if anyone has been listening to the 606 'Arry Kane 'aters calls I have to agree not sure how he gets in the team with crap goals like that!!

'At the moment of delivering the ball, the thrower must have part of each foot on the touchline or on the ground outside the touchline.'

DERMOT SAYS: "Gomez is fine. His foot is on the line, it's not over the line so it's fine. He hasn't entered the field of play. That was actually one of the better throws I've seen in the competition, there have been so many foul throws that have been accepted."

I can't tell if you are pulling my leg or genuinely believe what you are saying. The quote from the article you think proves your point proves mine.

His foot is in the line says Dermot, not over. That's is the exact opposite of what you say it says. Perhaps you didn't read it close enough.

Im not going to tell you how I know but I know I know a great deal more about the laws than you. I can assure you your interpretation of the law is incorrect.

If by law 17, you are referring to the placement of the ball "within" the arc then the line which defines the arc is part of the area defined by it which is why a ball which overhangs the arc is within it. The sideline is part of the field when determining whether the ball is in or out but not part of the field when you out your foot on it during a throw in. As in when Dermot says "his foot is on the line....he hasn't entered the field". This is the only place in the laws that has this inconsistency.

Well, I spoke to a guy in the week who was in the middle for an EFL game today and he agrees with mine. I can't quote him but since you can't say your source either then we're square.

His foot wasn't over the line, it was ON the line exactly as the law requires.

Entering the field of play is when his foot completely crosses the line. I agree it's an anomaly that one side of the line is the defining side in this case, whereas for ball in and out of play it's the outer part of the line, but that's the fact.
