Iranian players mumbling the anthem under duress, by the look of it. Horrible situation.

Wales saved by VAR. Should be a wake up call hopefully.

It's airconditioned pitchside isn't it? Sun will still be fierce but I did hear of fans in the lower rows needing jumpers (not for goalposts, for warmth)

2 poor teams.

The USA must be enjoying this.

If this ends in a draw and we win tonight we are group winners, aren't we?

Yes. And probably Ecuador in the knock outs.

Aaron Ramsey - why does he keep getting picked? Sentiment over ability now. You can see why he couldn’t get a game for Rangers. Bale going the same way…..both young relatively though.

It looks like it only works if StColin says it, but well tried.

I reckon after seeing England put 6 past Iran Wales thought all they had to do was turn up.

perhaps some of the ABEs might give some credit for England making Iran look poor?

Aaron Ramsey is rubbish.

I hope this helps.

Interesting scenario in this group. If this stays the same and England beat the US then we'll have Wales needing to beat England to go through and the US or Iran needing to beat the other. The US v Iran game will be worth watching. 🙂

A draw isn't too bad for Wales if England do win tonight is it? It'll mean Wales need to beat England who will already be through as top team so might rest players.

That said, Iran goal coming unless Wales step up

That corner was shockingly bad!

Then Wales hit a terrible long ball.

2 terrible teams.

It's going to be even worse in 2026 when there are 48 teams in the finals1

Never going to happen based on this display, even against the England reserves.

Random thought as the Iranian was breaking there.

Every year (4 years) ball technology improves, there was a period 2-3 WC's ago where they couldn't get it to fly straight but we don't hear so much of that now.

But we're a full round of matches in now and I can't think of a proper long range worldy; a few placed from around the edges and corners of the box, but no 30 yard screamers - as the Iranian was breaking I was thinking he was getting into range but didn't have any thought of shooting. Anything to do with balls, or just culturally that intricate passing and close range finishes seem to be more in vogue?

also - no red card so far? Less likely to do something daft / better decision making because of the likelihood VAR will condemn you? It hasn't removed tackling at all, it's just better considered.

Are you Norman Tebbit? Some of us simply don't support England, but like football. Personally I have more cousins in the US than England, so I'm fairly neutral.

I don't care if you or anyone else is ABE, that's part of the territory of being an England fan. You can still reflect it was a very good performance against Iran that made them look poor.

I watch more rugby than football usually but isn’t that a red for kicking the lad in the head, regardless of whether there’s cover behind him?

Could have awarded that for either, but dangerous play trumps denial of goal-scoring opportunity.

I'm half Welsh, I live here, and there's a great buzz going on but looking at the football I'm not feeling it. They look a bit shite, don't they?

Absolutely - that was a red card all ends up for a high foot/body check.

Oops. Even worse I said decision making was getting better, that was the real problem, without the decision you don't need the challenge.

Feel sorry for Hennessy as he was the only Wales player who turned up and he gets sent off for his efforts. The rest of them should be taking a look at themselves, especially the so called superstars.

Iran almost to a man have beautiful hair. Very slick.
It’s occurred to me it really can’t be that hot at pitch level as nobody is pouring water on their heads and they haven’t had an extra drinks break?

I'm not very good at predictions......

I'm now nervous for tonight and Tuesday, USA need something and will press us hard, I hope quality will tell (and we do have quality) but it's a tough night ahead.

And then Wales next week with everything to gain and nothing to lose. It's not inconceivable to end up with a group like Italia 90 with everyone on 4 points and GD sorting it (but we did put 6 past Iran)

[actually, I think it is but could have three on 4 points]

Two assists from the Welsh Pirlo though - pretty good given he was only on for 10 minutes.

Nah. England will win both games easily. The US are athtletic and will push them hard but don't have the quality. Wales will get thrashed. We've only had one England game but against Iran they looked like they had the same ruthlessness in front of goal as in the Euros. England's only problem is the defence. It's not going to be good enough against quality attackers.

Or as us United supporters refer to him... Harry ****ing Maguire

The only positive to take is that he should be well rested, because he's played about 20 minutes of football all season. Unfortunately, there's a very good reason for that

I look forward to him pointing at the spot where he's meant to be because he's out of position, yet again

Wrighty talking sense again.

I think they should call FIFA's bluff. I think that's all it is, if they (England/Kane) or indeed anyone did it they'd either get sanctioned and I suspect FIFA would then face a massive ' No, I'm Spartacus' moment, or they wouldn't do anything and FIFA's pathetic backbone would be exposed.

Yes I'm biased, but as others have said, protesting is a risk. But millions of people are risking far more every day than the chance of winning a tin pot, just to live a life in the way they want to.

why the negative Wales comments?

because they were deserved? Honestly, they spend 50 years trying to get to the WC finals and then when they do they decide not to bother playing.

England being equally complacent against the US BTW. It’s just lazy.

bit lazy at the moment - both Sterling for the chance earlier, and then Rice just there have been simply run past and not made any great effort to track their runner

Slab head most switched on England player.

Might be because he's concentrating on tracking runs and making blocks rather than pointing and shouting.

Mount, Saka, Sterling, and to a lesser extent Bellingham need more movement off the ball to create options when Stones and Maquire are in possession. They seem to be leaving responsibility to create that first pass out from the back to everyone else and positioning themselves for the pass after that.

I’m beginning to think Southgate has told them to play for the draw. Bet he’ll be happier with a 0-0 than the 6-2 against Iran.
