Is it just me or does every one now see them selves as the next youtube sensation.
All the mtb groups on FB have an influx of average riders with poor youtube videos.
Normally telling folk where all the cheeky is and not advocating any building or maintaining.
I'm amazed that some of the bigger mtb bloggers have that large a following as I have to turn the volume off as the dirge that's spouted out does my tits in.
I know it must be hard not to come across as a right throbber on video and I know the go pro effect makes it worse but still I don't need to see another video of some joe dragging his brake down some thing whilst saying this is sick. Or brap or even Pew.
Thanks
grumpiest git on the forum.
Dave Jenvey is the only bike stuff I watched on you tube, used to really like the sweary northerners too, no seen anything from them for ages tho.
Ah I'd forgotten about the Sweary Northerners!! As someone that has never really had any bike skills at all....those guys seemed like really good riders!
Yes, everyone's got a youtube these days and 99% of it is pants.
I still maintain the gopro footage of mountain biking is the worst way to watch riding. I'll only watch videos where someone has taken the time to set up lots of third person angles and it's just more entertaining to watch and shows the trail a lot better. However its really time consuming and expensive to do so you dont see it often in amateur videos.
I did a post about this back in lockdown v1.
Every riding group (e.g. Lakes, Peak, Rivi, Scotland routes) is still being spammed by would-be Tommy C hype-a-likes.
As you say, it's not ideal to be publicly sharing vids of off-piste trails rather than just letting them spread by word of mouth. or maybe I'm another grumpy old git.
During the lockdown I ended up watching loads of mtb you tube stuff, some made me drag my bike to the lakes a fortnight ago. I'm never going to criticise anybody's efforts as whenever I plug my session onto my helmet I only ever look slow & rubbish.
I happened upon a bloke recently who has a large following and admittedly decent production but he made such and song and dance about how he was riding along footpaths in the LD that I thought you're a cock and switched off.
Agreed, had to hide a few people who did this on my local fb groups. I'm not really interested in watching you bimble down a track at 2mph with your gopro mounted too low.
I've noticed an increasing number of people posting videos tagging off piste trails or footpaths that are relatively sensitive. I've stopped following a couple of people like stopadoodledoo who have done this then gobbed off at people who brought the issue up in the comments.
Yes, everyone’s got a youtube these days and 99% of it is pants.
Yes, I've got one and it's pants. That's the point of Youtube or it was. It started as a place rank amateurs could post stuff to amuse their mates and anyone else who was interested and then the pros realised the power of it and it became what it is.
You have to go a little bit of effort to seek out amateur videos of a niche sport, then watch them.
Having done that once or twice and discovered you don't enjoy them, I'd suggest the answer is glaringly simple.
I like the amateurish nature of YouTube. If I want riding gods and high production values I'll watch Red Bull TV. I don't watch loads, but occasionally I quite like watching average Joes I can relate to, riding stuff I've ridden or might like to ride.
I wouldn't go as far as "got a YouTube channel" but I do post videos of my boy
Yes /no.... Mine is sick* and really only there so that I can share videos with my nephew and a few friends.

*misspelled shit
I have, just recently actually, might as well jump on the bandwagon. But actually I have some pretty cool bike projects coming into construction and wanted a way to share them through twitter and LinkedIn, as well as capture examples of a bunch of other good bike infrastructure that may be interesting to others in my field of work... so it's to help promote my work and best practice rather than be rad. If you like watching a virtual ride along some protected bike lanes with some chill music in the background knock yourself out. Here's one example of one I worked on...
Like... subscribe... etc...
I do, and 99% of it is pants - literally as it's about dance photographyt and not MTB'ing. Also probably in the non-literal sense. You can decide for yourself (if you have time to kill) 🙂

I fall off on most of my vids and mostly in water and they look awful on YouTube. Only just found out what settings to use.
Stephen Foster mtb
I use one for videos for the test stuff I do for UKgravelcollective but don't actually appear in them other than accidentally
I had 3 actually quite succesful vids, enough to make some money off them back when the limit was lower Then that was enough to draw the attention of the copyright police and one got taken down, even though the music was on their allowed list. Was better when no bugger'd actually seen them.
Will be doing an actual sort of series thing when I get into the drivetrain swap on my car, but only really because it's something that's never been well documented and a video'll be of actual use. What with that and all the internet money from the Pentland Hills Users facebook, we'll be millionaires!
I love the pricks on the comments sections whenever anyone is reviewing a bike(or Ebike) They claim they have some £8000 bike better than the one shown, but when you look at their channel theres zero content,.
Cyclists with you tube channels fill it with vids of them riding, fixing, riding, reviewing bikes, frames kit and trails.
Soon as i see prickish comments, its a sure sign the commentator is a sad loser.
I've got one. As above, it was started when YouTube was an amateur platform and that was what made it good.
I loved that it was a place where I could get away from advertising(actual adverts anyway) but now of course, every video you watch tends to be preceded and interrupted by adverts. Horrible.
I very rarely put much on there these days, but yeah, like, subscribe etc.
Ummmmm you have a YouTube channel. Granted it's bursting at the seams with 3 videos.....
Yes, but it is entirely a means to share skydiving videos from team training with people on the team. All videos are unlisted as, quite frankly, we were a rookie team and not exactly exciting to watch.
I don’t do anything exciting enough to warrant a “proper” channel. Well, apart from he cutaway. That was exciting at the time.
Um, guilty as charged...
My "channel" has been running for 14 years and is rad to the power of sick, or something. It's amassed 20 whole videos in that time, so almost 1.5 per year!

I do have some videos on youtube, however I don't link or hustle them or do sic intros or voiceovers
Does having content on youtube mean you have a channel or do you need to promote and share before it becomes a channel?
I'm just on with doing a load of test vids trying different settings on the de-vinchi resolve render page.
I must admit that finding something that works wasn't easy but 4k editing and using a custom profile instead of the YouTube tab has produced some very good results.
I now need to get out and record some new rides without breaking any lockdown rules.
I have a channel, but it's mainly me talking and annotating over the top of maths PowerPoints for my kids to access when they are in lockdown and away from school.
I think you'd need to put videos up regularly and try to grow an audience to call it a 'channel'. Otherwise it's just you sharing a few amateur vids with mates.

Is that because you want all children to have the access to the videos or because your school doesn't have teams (which would be weird). Not a criticism just curious as to the choice compared to how my partner does her lessons.
School doesn’t use Teams, and lots of the kids like rewatching them after the lesson, so they can pause, work out and then continue.
Follow dja25, what a small world.
got one and for some reason I have 1180 subs. What the channel has done for me is open up a lot more riding in Scotland and meeting new people. Not even made one vid a month for the past year mind you.

we do both. I made a channel for the biology and BGE section for my school. Chemistry and physics has one. We use teams as well.
I did a video today but you can't see any of it because I forgot to take the lens cap off 🙄
Kayak 23,
Loved that video. Funny how speeding things up makes it easier to understand/ follow.
A good friend of mine has this channel, admittedly only two videos so far but he doesn't want to hash things together.
I have an account but it's just the usually wobbly POV MTB shite. Even then I think it's got one or two videos at most!
I have where I post various stuff. It started out with Classic Car shows and reviews which is why it is called Classic Car Clips. That soon got really tedious so now covers what ever I happen to be building, painting or working on. The last ones I did were the 'Are you bored enough to watch me..." which I posted on here.
This thread has prompted me to look at the channel again and I have 62 subscribers and an average of 550 views per month. Noi idea if that is good or bad but pretty much the only place I promote the videos is on here so I guess some of you are my subscribers. Thanks!
Having said that, the most popular video is a review of the Range Rover I have now sold :
