If Brexit is going to be safe it’s going to need a few things,” he said. “One of them is the ability to be tough, be clear, deliver tough messages ... And I would worry, on the basis on what I’ve seen, that we wouldn’t necessarily get that from Penny.”

He doesn't think that anyway, he just knows it's the best way to turn those who make the selection off of her... to favour his preferred candidate... say that Brexit is at risk (while it has also been done, by him).

Liz is torpedoed below the waterline by her own team and the mighty Maggie Maybe Mordaunt.

And "Aspiration for life support during national CPR?" Seriously those PPE graduates need a better grasp of language!

I feel sick writing this, but if frost thinks mordaunt would be bad for brexit then she sounds right to me

She was/is actually a full on Brexiteer and was one of the people repeatedly criticised for perpetuating the myth that Turkey would be joining the EU, thus allowing 'millions of Turks' to come to the UK, which she knew full well was utter bollocks,so I wouldn't get your hopes up too much

I can't see why they would support someone with such a clunky delivery. You would think she has had some coaching, unfortunately for her public speaking is not one of her skills. Possibly the public will warm to her despite/because of that, but it does seem an electoral risk to have her fronting things up.

but it does seem an electoral risk to have her fronting things up

If she gets past the MPs, the members will absolutely lap her up. And she might still make it... when the other candidates are knocked out I can see her squeezing past Mordaunt still. Looking less likely every time she appears though! Electoral risk when eventually put to the general public...? You'd think/hope so... but we're a strange lot, the British English voters... so who knows.

Has anyone asked Liz, if she became PM, how would she feel in her first audience with Her Maj considering she called to abolish the monarchy?

Every time Liz opens her mouth you understand why she prefers to communicate through photos on Instagram and tweets so laden with emoji's that a 12 year old might regard them as a bit OTT.

She really is as thick as mince. No wonder the Tory membership love her

After that car crash this morning, I'm sure her team are presently locking her in a cupboard for the duration of the campaign

Its all relative. I think in the context of the Tory party, 'media savvy' actually means 'able to open Instagram'

I’m still struggling to come to terms with Truss being a favourite of the right wing Brexiteers when she was a Lib Dem and then campaigned for Remain… but i’m a voter so i must not understand politics.

Not necessarily.

The foaming-at-the-mouth far right lunatics who voted for Bravernman will now transfer their votes to someone else. They regard Penny Mordaunt as a female Jeremy Corbyn, so I reckon the only person as unhinged as them is Kemi Badenoch

The Tory Party election someone nobody had ever heard of as leader is just the type of thing they'd do. Especially considering the fact she makes Norman Tebbit look like Owen Jones

Had drinks with a colleague last night who's uni housemate works in Whitehall in trade dept

She's worked under Liam Fox - quite snooty , stickler for rules, not around much tho, but loyal to staff
Then under Truss, as barking as everyone says, no idea what she was doing and constantly coming up with hair brained schemes, quite a bit of resentment she took credit for department singing roll over deals she had no hand in
Then working for Mogg! Apparently quite nice & polite- his anti civil service stuff for show, but she said quite insecure; twice pulled a policy launch day before announcement because he changed his mind and ultimately achieved nothing

So the process is that this voting eliminates the contenders down to 2, which then goes out to vote by the membership.

In theory... top 2 in the final round then get voted on by the members. But if the second placed candidate stands down, then the members don't get a vote.

If that yougov is correct, they're readier for Badenoch or Truss. But what they actually want is Maggie Style Military Mordaunt.

Have you ever noticed?

Truss is only two letters different from Trump.

Makes you think.

If you mix up Truss with Trump to get Trusp... that's an acronym for Transrectal Ultrasound Biopsy of the Prostrate.

Makes you think even more.

And I'm still struggling to come to terms with people who claim to be to the left of the Tory Party celebrating Johnson's resignation, presumably under some sort of bizarre impression that he would be replaced by a Labour politician.

Politics is a struggle sometimes.

Our last remaining Johnson fan boy. He's not fit for office of any kind. He never was. Enough information come out after him being Mayor to see this, never mind from his time at the FCO. He should never have been made PM.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see badenoch and/or tugendhat now withdraw.

All have agreed to be in Friday's debate, so assume they want the attention and possible career progression that might come from being in this next round, at least for now (even if they have no chance of making the final two). Last minute withdrawals and "getting behind" a candidate that might put them in their cabinet still possible though.

If, like me, you're wondering how a right wing party like the Tories has so many minorities in (at least) it's upper ranks, who sound like, and have the world views of old white male Imperialists. Then World on Fire might be an interesting read. Ed West's sub-stack, exploring Tory diversity looks at the idea in terms of the folks hoping to become the next PM

70% are men
44% are over 65
97% are white
55% live in London & the South

and (no idea how true but, you know)

44 per cent also agreed that censorship can help uphold moral standards

welcome to the world where moral panic is caused by the sex pistols swearing on bill grundy's afternoon chat show...

Honestly I don't think they do. Most of the elderly folks now are Boomers, even the Conservative voting ones their battles in the 60's were all about counter-culture and social equality. Most are bemused by attacks on cultural issues that have been settled for decades now. They're looking at a £3500 energy bill and 10% inflation pushing the price of everything through the roof, and wondering why the Tories are obsessing over toilets or what's being (not) taught in University English classes.

My Mum sent me a picture of security tagged cheese in her local supermarket the other day, and essentially blamed the Tories for it, given that she's a life long Tory voter who lives in the SE, that should be a flashing warning.

Especially when you consider all the arguing about who could be on the election debates last time.

But imo it's a good opportunity for the public to see them all being shite. If it were all done quietly we'd miss out on the backstabbing, the random lies, and above all on Liz Truss just staring into space and saying delivering delivering delivering

Do they really believe by this show of love for Riscki they will be appointed home secretary or curried favor when the next cabinet re shuffle is announced?

If that's the way it works, pin the colours to the mast, cheer and clap like those wallys on top of the pops (its leo sayer, you know he's abit shit but clap alot please) and get a pay rise amd promotion for rocking up to a press junket then there is no wonder we are in abit of a pickle.

The Conservative Leadership Debate will air from 7pm to 9.30pm

Two and a half bleedin hours???

How long can they spend talking about tax cuts ffs?

Although I guess on the plus side it gives them plenty of time to spend slagging each other off which obviously has considerable entertainment value.

Looking forward to it.

Lucky you. It’s definitely a thing my (fully paid up DM-reading) MIL worries about.

Yeah... 'Woke' is the new 'Health and Safety Gone Mad' e.g. you can take one extreme example and use it to define/bash an entire concept, so for H&S people might dismiss sensible stuff like 'taking precautions to prevent people being squashed under earthmovers' because someone suggested something daft like 'remove all scissors from offices' or something.

Similarly Piers Morgan (all you need to know really) coined the idea of 'woke' based (I think) on some New Zealand University that debated the idea of 'safe rooms' for students, and it has subsequently been used to basically smear the entire concept of young people thinking for themselves and not just accepting a status quo handed down to them by wealthy white privileged males (Piers Morgan again). Ultimately it's an amazingly effective tool as it defines everything the Tory membership distrusts e.g. youth, progress, not kow-towing to racist pensioners any more, etc. etc. 😂

Remember normal people Do Not glue themselves to politicians or policy whatever.
